Not sure whether to get 33s or 44s, I skate 8.125s which seem to be right in the middle

I guess a question you can ask yourself is lets say that you cant get a hold of an 8.1 for whatever reason, would you rather skate an 8 (33s) or 8.25 (44s)? from there you can pick accordingly. (Hope this makes sense)

Cross post from the madness thread on the weights of different versions and ground down trucks. Might be of interest here as well:

Someone here speculated some pages back on how much lighter well worn trucks are compared to new ones and hollow versions. Well, I have a kitchen scale, new Ace AF1s, various ground down ones and also new hollows. All are 66s (9” wide). Unfortunately I do not have the hollowed hangers that come in the inverted trucks.

Standard new: 412g
Hollow new: 385g
Standard ground down to axle: 392g / 396g
Standard ground the fuck down: 380g

So, with the AF1 66s you need to grind down to axle and then a whole bunch more to match the weight of the hollows. There’s still life left on the hanger if the ones ground the fuck down but the kingpin nut is a wedge that won’t stay on. Would have to continue with new baseplates and not grind anymore or switch to inverted baseplates.

Speaking of which, I got all the AF1 baseplates here except the lows. Weighed them all on their own just to see the differences.
Standard: 146g
Hollow: 140g
Inverted: 127g

Not much of a difference between the standard and hollow. Only 6g. I guess the axle gives the bigger difference, at least on 66s, 21g in this case. But the inverted baseplates are quite a bit lighter.

From those numbers you could calculate that a hollow AF1 is 6g + 2.333…g/inch lighter than a standard truck. Dunno what anyone would do with that info, but there it is. 😊

Just as a note, these measurements are done on a random Soehnle kitchen scale from only one truck/baseplate from each apart from having two ground down standards. So the accuracy might not be 100% but at least this gives you an idea on how these things go.

Skating the 55 Lows on a board right now. I switched the stock bushings for Ace Low Hard and the rethreader nuts for regular nylock nuts.

I usually skate Thunder 149 Lights (51mm tall). These are a little more comfortable to push around on being a couple mm lower. Fun turn. The wheelbite doesn't pitch me.

Nice. I’ve skated the normal AF1 44s and most recently Venture V Hollows 5.8s. Looking to size down again and try lows. What size wheels you ride with them?

I haven't skated normal AF1s, but I have spent a lot of time on Ventures. Riding 52mm Classics on the 55 Lows.

I recently got a new pair of AF1s and I swear they changed the bushings or something. They felt rock hard immediately I was losing my balance trying to carve like I was on some ventures cranked down. At first I was like maybe I just need to break them in a bit more and no luck. Ive had 2 or 3 pairs in the past and I swear I remember them being surfy off rip brand new. Even had homies who aren’t sick with madness try my board and they agreed. They’re lop siding too I kick my board and watch it veer to the left/right. Shit is making me lose my mind. Even after loosening 2 quarter turns they felt off. Anyone else noticed anything like this or have any ideas as to why? I will probably try to update with a photo of the bushings bc I swear they even look different, more bulbous and not as creamy white.

Sounds defective. Where did you buy/order them from? Did they come in the af1 sleeve? Either they’re defective or someone swapped in some ultra hard bushings somehow. If you can’t return them or the place you bought from won’t help you, email mesa through their website. They’ve always been responsive and helpful for me.

So I actually just finished emailing ace/mesa we’ll see what they say

Actually glad you mentioned this bc they did not come in the AF1 sleeve now that you mention it… weird

I bought them at the local which is No Comply in Austin Texas. Gonna wait to hear back from Mess but until then I’ll probably just run my old bushings which are damn near completely blown out. But should feel way better than whatever the hell is going on with these rocks for bushings

If you bought them in a shop they wouldn’t usually come with the bag anyways. I was thinking also maybe they’d just been sitting there too long and somehow the bushings degraded? Ace bushings do get kinda yellow over time & you said they were kinda discolored

Wouldn't be the first time someone has swapped out bushings on trucks, without the buyer knowing, but maybe more so they are old stock or something else going on with the bushings, so swapping in another set of regular Ace bushings should solve that issue.

I wonder if going back to the shop and checking if they have other sets of trucks or bushings, or checking with them as well, if it is easy enough to get there, but really I have seen some Ace trucks and bushings that seemed very different to their regular bushings every so often.  Could just be something like that.

* I don't see any Ace bushings on their site, but they might have some there anyway.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Been getting the feel for my 55 Lows. Pop/timing seems to be clicking for me, though I have to admit slappy tricks have been the majority of my skating lately.

Low trucks are so much more comfortable to push around on than 53mm+ trucks. Pinch is definitely way worse than the Ventures or Thunders I have been skating previously, but they are more fun to ride with the better turn.

Wheelbite isn't bad at all with em (52mm Classics + wax the wheel wells). I do skate the Low Hard bushings in em. Need another set of the Low Hard bushings for my next setup with 60 Lows..

Got the AF-1 Low 44s with the hollow axle. Threw them on an 8.25 OG Baker shape with 52mm F4s. I’ve only skated them for a little bit so far. Still getting used to the timing for the pop and also still waiting on my hard bushings to arrive. But so far they’re really nice. First time I’ve ridden low trucks maybe ever, so it might take some time to get the pop down.

Pretty hard to track down a set so I ordered them in pieces from Mesa.
