Thanks for the compliment on the CMYK photo boards. I had fun doing them.
Process is not easy and pretty time consuming so its not real practical for production, just one offs. Back to the drawing board I guess!

Did a quickie spraypaint Penny Killer cruiser the other day for a friends god daughter. Xmas complete incoming.





Board is from Quincy, so RIP on that one, but its a rad shape. Trucks are lil' Theeves I had kicking around. Wheels are Bones cruisers of some sort.

I got a Cricut for Christmas. This is my first little project. This is just vinyl on wood. They have these ink based transfers Im gonna play with soon.

How'd you print the vinyl?
Will it stay on? My decal transfers rip off if you look at them funny. Trying for something more durable.

Edit: I see. A Circut. Is the color/texture dependent on the vinyl?

Likely won’t last long. Luckily I’m not much of a board slider. There are different types of vinyl. Most of its doesn’t seem better than a sticker as far as putting in on boards. I made some sweatshirts on my sisters before I got my own. They were fine.



I’m and excited to try the ink stuff soon.

Pretty much anything is ok, but if you do it too thick it might end up very sticky.

A couple of guys I skate with always only buy blanks and spray their own, usually single colours, but then put a lot of wax on their boards too, just to even out the stickiness.  I used to always get blanks back in the day and paint them, sometimes it was very slick, other times I couldn't slide at all without a ton of wax.

At one point, I would use matt black to do the middle of new boards, because I liked more slick slide on the nose and tail, but didn't want to slip out on decker tricks, which worked well for me.

Higher gloss is more slick than matt finish too.

If you got a bit creative, you could mix it up some as we used to do, but the plain white deck (or single colour) really shows off the slide marks well.

How much do you have in the way of griptape offcuts?

Mob especially will take off that graphic pretty quickly, but doing it by hand takes a while, depending on how much of the board you are sanding.

I have a small sander that I stick the griptape offcuts to which does the job nicely, but I have also used a small piece of wood that I stick the grip on as well.

buy 4 different sheets of sandpaper at your local hardware store for 25 cents each and start sanding with the grain. Sanding is better for your deck than accidently soaking it with chemicals

go 80-120-220-320 grit

Then wipe with acetone or paint thinner or just plain water after a good sanding

or do boardslides until you like it

In the process of starting a skate brand by cutting and finishing shapes myself (yup, became yet another person starting a board brand). "Wide board short wheelbase" riders should like this.

So far I've decided on two shapes, with the third still in the works.



9.875" x 31.82"



9.81" x 33.5" (only measures so long because of the punk nose, a good inch of the nose wouldn't be really skated and tail is right below 7" based off my measurements, which is the middle of the outside mounting holes to the tip of the tail).

Both decks will have a 14" - ~14.5" adjustable wheelbase (not pictured in the first image as I didn't drill the holes then). Haven't decided which color I want to stain the punk point.

Is it pretty easy to accidentally sand a ply away when sanding off a graphic or nah? Sanding off a DIY spray paint stencil gone wrong on an unfinished blank deck, the paint is on there pretty good so I gotta go pretty rough to get it off, just kinda worried I might wear a whole ply away or something tho while doing it. I am using sandpaper and doing it by hand btw.

No you would be there for hours to try to get through a layer of ply.

Even just doing some simple graphic removal, you barely get through the paint layer and hardly take much wood with it.

The griptape off cuts I was using would tend to clog up pretty fast, but they were good for getting most of the paint off fairly easily, then just do the same all over a bit more gently and you would be looking at plain wood in no time.
