Fucking love White Lotus and the new season is absolutely hitting the spot for me

white lotus and a thousand blows are both absolute fire television

Loving it too.  Crazy that Arnold Schwarzenegger's oldest son is on the cast.  Anyone else get the ick from Parker Posey and his dynamic?  Can't wait until Walter Goggins' characters motivation is revealed.

I’ve got access to AMC+ so I’ve been rewatching Mad Men. It’s an incredible show but goddamn I hate how much I relate to Peter Campbell at times.

“How are you?”
“Not great, Bob.”

@Atiba Applebum thought I'd jump onto this thread instead of the Greyson one to say that along with John from Cinci, my top shows that come to mind are Tokyo Vice, Their flag means death, Spaced, and Utopia Uk off the top of my head.

Damn I remember how hard it used to be to track down Utopia.   Such a shame Fincher never adapted it, but apparently his demands, like shooting it chronologically amongst others, were too expensive

I liked all those too, but apart from John, they all concluded well enough.   From what I remember John didn’t so it never took hold, but I was def intrigued by it and got into Kem Nunn and Don Winslow to chase that high

Yep, lots was setup for a second season, it's a bummer it never happened. I've heard Milcher talk about it, he was piiiissed. I think it was related to being in a similar timealot to the Sopranos, back when that mattered. Somehow the lack of conclusion didn't bother me too much though, I loved the dialogue and quality of the character interactions, and the surf culture/spirituality, but wasn't that invested in the plot. I agree with what you said in the other thread, I find it surprising too that there'd be that big of a fan base still, but then again, I recognized that butchie instead quote right away, and it made me stoked so who knows.

Dogme 95 series on Criterion this month. A bit skimpy but I haven't seen two of them.

Dancer in the Dark
Julien Donkey Boy
Mifune
Italian for Beginners
The Celebration

Fuckin loved The Celebration but haven't watched the others yet, what were your favorites or how would you rank em? I know Dancer in the Dark is supposed to be devastating which has me pretty intrigued.

I was curious about how many actually got made. It's a whole lot more than I thought but that article also talks about why Vinterberg ultimately killed it off. I mean it's not crystal clear but ultimately it sounded like he thought it was naturally played out. I like the bit about how an artist must always be on thin ice.

I would say of the 5 on Criterion, The Celebration does hold up the best but I've never seen Italian for Beginners and am looking forward to that. Dancer in the Dark technically doesn't qualify but almost can't because it's a musical which is a very Lars thing to do. Make up a bunch of rules and then conceive of a film where it would be impossible to adhere to them. There's also credible reports that he was total PoS to Bjork and harassed her in every way possible. It would be 20 years before she appeared in another movie so it's hard to glaze that one up too much, even though taken on it's own it's crushingly sad and pretty amazing. Julien Donkey Boy is straight up dreck but it is the start of the mainstreaming of Werner Herzog. Shortly thereafter, he starred in An Incident at Loch Ness and had been making docs where he narrated them and now Seth Myers has pretty decent Herzog impression.

The Pitt finally has a skateboard injury on it tonight.   (Couldn’t be less of a spoiler, don’t worry)

It was great.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen the washed up parent getting on a skateboard slip and fall.
...couldn't make out the kids set up.

Anybody watxhing Severance? episodes 7 & 8 are pure drudgery, can't think of another show that put the breaks on this hard. Did their writers all quit or die or something? Sheesh.

Common Side Effects on Max is pretty good. I’m on ep3 and the story has me hooked. It’s on the more serious side of Adult Swim content so don’t expect a ton of laughs.

Heretic on Max.   I think people will find it interesting at least.  I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t that.   Don’t go in hoping for Lights Out type of horror movie

heretic is one of the most obnoxious movies i've sat through because somebody said something similar to me about it being "interesting at least". does not belong in this thread imo

it wasn't poorly made, but my word for how i felt afterward was "ennui". a letterboxd reviewer summarized it as "Jigsaw if he was an insufferable reddit atheist" and that feels pretty accurate to me. def wish i'd watched something else after having finished it

fair enough, yeah i suppose at very least it's different from the standard template in some ways.

i enjoyed the movie Oddity from last year if i were pressed to recommend a recent horror-genre movie that isn't Nosferatu. it's probably on one of the big streaming services. i watched it on Hoopla via my public library. ghost story with unique plot and well developed characters/good acting

I did not remember that Oddity was called that but I saw the trailer and was really sold. So far it's only streaming via Hoopla but I don't think it's out of the early rental/purchase VOD window yet .

yeah, that works pretty well as a description.

i thought it was interesting bc it wasn't doing that typical "girls in duress in a creep's house" and Hugh Grant kept me engaged, but i did start to get a little disengaged by all the discussion at the end which is why I could never get into Doctor Who.

if it wasnt free on max, i wouldn't have brought it up, but i figured someone on here might like it

Yeah conversations went down hill when they got to that savior part....also why did they include the elder that was looking for the girls, felt like a waste of screen time since his role went nowhere

Yeah - typically you’d expected Brother Topher Grace to get fucked up by Hugh Grant for snooping, but in the end he just became a contingency for Hugh Grant to have predicted

It would have been better if the elder dude was in on it with Hugh

I wonder if there was more to it, but got cut out in editing. Either way the movie started strong for me but was ultimately a disappointment.

you are supposed to hate the family. they do such a great job at creating an experience of cringe through those characters. i legitimately experience physical discomfort sometimes watching their scenes.

I just finished watching season 1 of Andor and really enjoyed it.
It’s cool to see something new from the Star Wars universe that isn’t regurgitated fan service stuff and has aspects of complex moral ambiguity mixed into the general wholesomeness of the franchise.
The writing is decent, there’s some phenomenal acting performances, and the sets and the overall look/aesthetic is on point.
If anybody is interested the first 3 episodes of season 1 are free on YouTube:

As a kid Daredevil was my favorite super hero comic book and pre Frank Miller it actually wasn’t very popular compared to Spider-Man, X-men, Hulk, Fantastic Four, etc- so I was able to collect almost all of the back issues for super cheap. I’m interested in checking out the show after watching a few scenes on YouTube (Jon Bernthal as The Punisher is perfect casting) but I’ve been a bit hesitant to invest my time into it because I’ve still got PTSD from the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie.

You never checked out Netflix-era Daredevil?   First season is killer.   People have differing opinions about 2-3.   I personally have enjoyed them all despite fuckin Foggy being a giant sucking sound whenever he’s on screen.  It’s like reverse Poochie.   Every time he’s on screen, I’m saying “why is he here?”

(Fun fact: Ninja Turtles were created to be in the Daredevil world/take off on it.  Originally the chemicals that went in young Matt’s eyes went down into the sewer and got on the turtles.   DDs ninjas are the Hand while Turtles fight the Foot Soldiers, not to mention senseis Stick and Splinter)

I gotta agree with @Atiba Applebum i think they nailed it with Charlie Cox as DD... Same with Bernthal as punisher (my fav as a kid). I'm actually looking forward to the "street level" mcu with DD, Punisher, Spidey etc.. i hope they recast iron first though...love to see him in the mix. All the defenders, really.

@Atiba Applebum yeah unfortunately I didn’t catch it while it was on Netflix but I’m going to try to stream it ASAP due to Slap recommendations.
Crazy about the connection to TMNT. I used to love those early Eastman and Laird comics.
