Daredevil is back and still kicks ass. The only superhero thing that’s done anything for me in years.
[close]

As a kid Daredevil was my favorite super hero comic book and pre Frank Miller it actually wasn’t very popular compared to Spider-Man, X-men, Hulk, Fantastic Four, etc- so I was able to collect almost all of the back issues for super cheap. I’m interested in checking out the show after watching a few scenes on YouTube (Jon Bernthal as The Punisher is perfect casting) but I’ve been a bit hesitant to invest my time into it because I’ve still got PTSD from the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie.

You never checked out Netflix-era Daredevil?   First season is killer.   People have differing opinions about 2-3.   I personally have enjoyed them all despite fuckin Foggy being a giant sucking sound whenever he’s on screen.  It’s like reverse Poochie.   Every time he’s on screen, I’m saying “why is he here?”

(Fun fact: Ninja Turtles were created to be in the Daredevil world/take off on it.  Originally the chemicals that went in young Matt’s eyes went down into the sewer and got on the turtles.   DDs ninjas are the Hand while Turtles fight the Foot Soldiers, not to mention senseis Stick and Splinter)

I gotta agree with @Atiba Applebum i think they nailed it with Charlie Cox as DD... Same with Bernthal as punisher (my fav as a kid). I'm actually looking forward to the "street level" mcu with DD, Punisher, Spidey etc.. i hope they recast iron first though...love to see him in the mix. All the defenders, really.

@Atiba Applebum yeah unfortunately I didn’t catch it while it was on Netflix but I’m going to try to stream it ASAP due to Slap recommendations.
Crazy about the connection to TMNT. I used to love those early Eastman and Laird comics.

when you’re watching it, this is where the mini-trend of long take hallway fights started (I guess you could trace it back to Oldboy … but everyone after seemed to be referencing DD S1 style of shooting it the scenes)
They were for sure referencing Old Boy. Joe Quesada, the then long time EIC of Marvel, had used that scene as a reference point to get writers and artists to decompress their storylines in new cool ways ( so they could be sold in trade format) and you can do that really well by articulating the action, blow by blow. Ed Brubaker's Daredevil and Hawkeye series are a prime example of this kind of storytelling done super well. In any case, that scene is a subrosa shoutout to that time in comics.

Foggy is like that in the comics and I thought he was at his most useful I've ever seen him in season 1. TMNT is a straight spoof of what was crackin in the direct market in the early 80s. They're called Mutant and they're teenagers because of the X-Men but otherwise it's a pretty direct send-up of Miller's DD, played poker straight. He started just as an artist as a kind of Neal Adams clone when it was near cancelation and then settled into his heavier more cubist style while he developed his writing skills with the Elektra storyline. He's been a kook for decades but that run from 82-91 that ends with the first Sin City serial is an untouchable run where he almost singlehandedly evolved the medium.

I don’t mind Foggy the character, it’s Elden Henson the actor that sucks.   All those Netflix Marvels shows had at least one actor that ground the show to a halt.   Just sub-network tv style acting.   Jon Favreau was a good Foggy.

You guys weren’t kidding about how impressive those hallway fights are on the show. Goddamn.

Unfortunately you also weren’t kidding about how bad the show’s portrayal of Foggy Nelson is.

Just watched the first ep yesterday.  Crazy to compare their portrayal of Brittish cops to American cops..  So much more empathetic and compassionate.  Really bummed me out thinking about it, but great show so far.

Slap went down right when discussions about Baby Billy’s nutless sack would have taken off
I was totally meaning to bring up Righteous Gemstones. That first flashback episode that Danny McBride directed was a banger but I think the two most recent episodes have been leaning more towards silly and the life threatening mayhem is missing. I know it's early but I wonder where they are going? In all honesty, I thought that last season was meant to be the end with the reuniting of the full Gemstone family.

Walter fully hanging dong, no prosthetic was a really funny way for them to fill their Sunday night smut quota.

Just watched all 8 episodes of The Residence on Netflix, it’s really well done and Jason Lee is fun to watch in this as a bonus.

@Atiba Applebum @Painted Baby @RoaryMcTwang thanks for turning me onto Daredevil. I’m 5 episodes into it and really liking it so far. I’m hoping that Vondie Curtis Hall’s role at Ben Urich expands because he’s a great actor and Urich was such a significant part of the comic books.
Has anyone been watching Celtics City on HBOMax? Curious to hear people’s thoughts on it. I’ve enjoyed it ok so far- but I’ll admit that I was expecting more since The Last Dance documentary series set the bar very high. At least they finally started trying to address Boston’s overt racism which they glossed over in the first few episodes.

I won’t spoil things unless you say you want to know.   I’m holding off on the new Daredevil

Also, if you want to be a semi-completionist: Kingpin is in the Hawkeye series that likely ties in this season (and technically in Echo, but that’s missable.  The only vital thing is in the post credits, but I’m sure the new series covers that just fine).  Also Daredevil pops up in She Hulk and you get to see a classic suit there.

Havent seen Celtics City bc I’m a Lakers fan, but there are some good 30 for 30s on Netflix

Thanks @Atiba Applebum I’ll revisit 30 for 30. I had trouble starting the Celtics Lakers best of enemies series when I realized that I’d have to listen to Donnie Wahlberg narrating the thing lol- but I’m going to give it another attempt. I guess if it has to be a Wahlberg then I’m glad it’s him and not his brother.

30 for 30s: Winning Time, Reggie Miller and that great pacers and knicks rivalry of the 90s...NBA nostalgia. Fun watch.

I'm by no means a Boston fan, but 4 days in October as well. Sox came back from an 0-3 deficit to the yanks in the 2004 ALCS. No wahlborgs in that one if i recall..

Actually they made a longer series ab the Sox, "the comeback". Goes more in depth. Not bad either /sportsNerd

I loved the movie This Is England and just found out they did a few mini series afterwards. This is England '86 is a banger of a show and hyped to watch the rest. Only 3-4 episodes a season too

Probably not since he died tragically we all have to pretend he wasn’t a huge piece of shit who pursued his wife while she was still in college, while getting arrested for what he did in Colorado snitched on Shaq, publicly revealed his accusers name so that she would feel the heat from the public and push her towards settling, gave himself his own nickname, and somehow be a super beloved icon though he could never win without Phil or Fish and watching him was an excruciating experience of inefficient, forced shots bc he wouldn’t pass to his bad teammates (which were only bad bc no one wanted to play with the psycho).   But that’s just the perspective of a lifelong lakers fan

I’m sure the doc will cover what a Girl Dad he was and how cool it was he ran through Pau during the Olympics
Reading half way I immediately thought of that bullshit he did on Pau. That was fucked up. No reasoning can make that rational. ok. yeah, i agree with ya, man.

Speaking of paramount+, finally got around to mayor of Kingstown.... pretty damn good. On episode 4 or 5 season 1.

Also looking forward to mobland. A Stan for anything Tom hardy tho.

I’m pumped for the Netflix movie coming at the end of April Hardy’s doing with the The Raid:Redemption/Gangs of London guy

if anyone is a secret softie and wants to melt their icy heart, new love on the spectrum season dropped. these people are so damn sweet and brutally honest its great.

I BLEW through this season yesterday...  I'm not a binge watcher at all, but I feel super invested in all of their stories. No spoilers, but I hope James' isn't getting played. I would kill for that man lol.

I liked the Kraven movie

Den of Thieves 2 was kind of mid

Jack Reacher on Prime was good

Side Effects on Max is peaking pretty hard for me at the moment, so good

Whoa that's eerie. I was just trying to recall a scene from that movie last night and at first I wasn't even sure what movie it was in. There's a whole thing about a very specific color Cadillac in there right?

White lotus season 3 finished up pretty good. If you've liked the previous seasons you'd probably like it.

V Mild spoiler:  each season starts with a little flash forward type scene for how the season ends, without giving away much so every episode you're constantly wondering how it'll get to that point and I thought it worked out in a pretty satisfying way.
