I'm pretty sure that he once attended a gallery with a boyfriend (it was something I heard about when I first entered the internets of skating and that's about 7 or 8 years ago) - I also think that because the media won't talk about it adds fuel to the rumours... couldn't someone just ask him and get over with it?

There will for sure be a small percentage at least of skaters who are gay or whatever. Personally I don't really think it matters, but if that story about the guy in the 90's who came out and was subsequently dropped by his sponsors is true, I can see why there are not any others rushing to be the "first openly gay pro skater".

If Brian Anderson is gay, I care because I am a skate nerd. If Ryan Decenzo is a transexual, I would care because I'm a skate nerd.
I don't care because I want to think less of the skater or because it will make some difference to how I view their skateboarding.
Same thing with how I "care", for lack of a better phrase, or "want to know" about some pros drugs of choice, it's interesting to me as someone who enjoys our industry and media.

Having said that, obviously there will be those who do care and WILL think it's unacceptable for someone to skate and be gay. To be honest, we all MUST know some gay skater? I like in Ireland and havn't met any "lifers" who I have suspected of being gay. Anyone in their hometown/country of residence know anyone on a local level that is an openly gay skater?

I was at some Nike thing at SXSW two years ago and they had a Q&A w/ some teamriders, BA included, and he was acting all crazy. Interupting ppl and saying weird shit. Before the thing started, some guy was telling ppl how the thing was gonna go down, and BA just kept saying "am I gay? am I gay?" He complimented my shirt, we talked to him for a while. Dude is pretty awesome in real life.

Wow this thread is a goldmine of intellectual discussion.

The truth is, I don't want to know if someone is gay. As homophobia-free as we all think we are, there still would be an expected negative bias towards that pro. Whether we believe it ourselves or not, the expectation of other people will bleed into our minds and it'll be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It's almost like asking a skater what their political beliefs are. It doesn't have anything to do with why we watch them, yet it'll impact our perception of them (more often than not) in a negative way.

If you REALLY want to know if there are gay skateboarders, think of it as a numbers game. Anywhere from 5-10% of people are gay. There HAS to be a handfull of pros out there who are gay. I don't care who is gay, but to answer your question: Yes, there are some gay people in skateboarding.

Now lets talk about something else: I just got one of these and feel like I've been living under a rock. This thing cooks up the tastiest meals with no effort at all.
