That album was super good, I think I got into them around 2007-2008. But, as usual I agree with Huell(sual), because that was our golden age dude.

From like 2004 until like 2015.

Over a decade of amazing bands putting out amazing records damn near every month and some of the best shows I’ve ever been too.

To keep it on topic I’ll add a video in which somewhere I this gaggle of folk there is a 15 year old me going ape shit at arguably the best fest I ever went too.

It goes OF at 4:12

I definitely gravitate towards that mid-00's/early 10's era of hardcore so you guys probably were at shows with bills I'd kill to see. Also when you find that video, would love to see it.

Okay, word that’s what sort of what I figured, around that range. But also, every generation of has level feeling like they just barely missed the boat on their favorite music.

When I was younger all I thought about was how I wish I could have just been born like 5-6 years earlier then I could have seen all of my favorite bands. Despite the fact I saw comadre easily over thirty times, I was still bitter about not getting a chance to see Joshua fit for battle or jeromes dream. I distinctly remember complaining about that to my buddy Logan as we were driving to go see have heart and ceremony a week after seeing loma prieta and punch.

Point being there’s so much good shit that comes out, you can end up missing a lot of it by wishing for a way back machine, ya know?

Either way great record, and great taste my dude

Funnily enough, have watched this video before, I love Ceremony. Violence, Violence and Rohnert Park are some of my all time favorite albums.

And you're right! There's a lot to appreciate going on right now that I should be grateful I'm in the generation for. Being a midwest kid, Knocked Loose is massive for me and my friends. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea nor a a style of hardcore I typically listen to, there's a buzz around them and only living 90 minutes away from the scene that is booming in Louisville is something I am definitely grateful for.

And I think missing that era by a few years really makes me appreciate the opportunity to see a band from it. For instance, I have never seen Ceremony and I really look forward to the opportunity to see them. Or being able to see the Have Heart reunion at Sound And Fury was super important to me. I was like 16 the first time I saw the final show video on youtube and that lead me down the rabbit hole that is hardcore, and I've been hooked ever since. So having the opportunity to see a such an important band I just assumed I'd never see is something I am thankful for.

Not to romanticize hardcore or be overly sappy about it, I think ultimately you're right. It's okay to be bummed about what I missed but I shouldn't let that distract me from the sick shit happening now.

Apologies for the tangent but I appreciate the response, sounds like you and I could talk shop on hardcore all day. I'll be the cliche young kid now and toss in some bands happening right now I think are the shit. (also followed suit and included live set I went crazy for, pretty proud of my dive @ 4:25 not gonna lie)

@Prinzy oh dude I get it for sure, and the Midwest has such an incredible tradition of amazing bands, articles of faith, naked raygun, crudos, mkultra, weekend nachos, spine, negative approach, usurp synapse, and about 1300 other fantastic bands!

But if you’re in southern Indiana/ky/Tennessee there’s so many bands to listen to/take influence from, and start making music inspired by it - hellnation, severed head of state, burned up bled dry, tragedy, his hero is gone, from ashes rise, man with gun lives here, deaththreat etc.

Dude, if I had a dollar for every hour I spent watching videos of old bands play I’d be a rich man. I remember watching a video of pageninetynine playing by the fireplace in white, in a skatepark (to a crowd that consisted of members from love lost but not forgotten, jeromes dream, Breed/extinction and Joshua fit for battle) probably 150+ times.

You can get sappy about hardcore dude! That’s what this whole fucking thread is about. I mean hardcore and skating saved my god damn life, I can talk about this shit 24 hours a day! If you ever wanna talk about it, find new bands or whatever, hit me up because I fucking love it.

Also, that slug demo fucking rips, and that was one helluva dive.

I’ll include some necessary older/my golden age shit

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, AFI was one of the best hardcore bands of all time.

@Freelancevagrant I fucking love Spine, good rec!

I checked out that Dead End Path rec and was enjoying it but as soon as that Cold World feature hit, I was big sold. Shit fucking rips.

AFI is one of those bands I've been meaning to deep dive on. I think the idea of a hardcore band doing something 'bigger' as their career progresses is a super interesting phenomenon that has numerous examples of successes and failures. I know a few people a couple years older than me who love Sing The Sorrow and December Underground as those were pivotal "scene" albums for them. Might have to do some deep digging on their 90's work.

And I would love some more recommendations, seems like we have a lot of overlap in taste!

Dead end path were so fucking sick, that whole scene in Wilkes Barre was churning out so much good hardcore back in the day

Dude AFI’s first four records are among the finest examples of Bay Area hardcore, I’ll post one track from each record to serve as a jump of point for you. My brother is 8 years older than me, and he went to the record release shows for very proud of ya, shut your mouth and open your eyes, and black sails in the sunset, and I’m still jealous about that shit. Full disclosure, up until like 2007 I thought there were two bands called AFI, one was the super sick hardcore band that stood for Asking For It/Anthems For Insubordinates, and another one that stood for A Fire Inside.

And it’s funny that you say that because that’s kind of what Ceremony did, but at this points in both of their careers they’ve not been hardcore bands a lot longer than they were. Nothing will take away from how great violence violence and still nothing moves you are, but they’re very different from rohnert park, zoo, the l shaped man etc. but god damn old ceremony was so sick. I’ve skated with Ross a few times before shows, he taught me how to do no complies and he has a nice wallie.

The AFI tracks are in chronological order of their release. My personal favorite record is the third, shut your mouth and open your eyes. I’ll also include one or two other bands I really enjoy from that era.

Wrong Answer is super sick and their entire discography is flawless, end to end.

Down To Nothing was so fucking good, when I was stationed in VA I got to see them so many fucking times, and they were great.

It wasn't until fairly recently that I learned "Fuck the Border" was originally an I-Spy song.

you've been listening to that podcast too huh?
they debuted it (AFAIK) that track in Australia during their 97 tour (or maybe they were already playing it at their Canadian shoes?) just after John had left the band and the chorus was more sped up chants of fuck the border, fuck the border, fuck the border! as opposed to the long drawn-out Fuuuuuuuck The Borderrrrrrr!

going back to ISPY, I think the split with propagandhi is a tad more "melodic" but the revenge of the little shits 10" is so fucking heavy!

I listened to the two with Chris Hannah, might have been a few more I listened to as well.  I live seven hours south of Winnipeg in South Dakota, so listening to them talk about touring through here was extremely interesting to me.

Also, is it just me, or does Potemkin City Limits sound like radio buttrock that's actually really good?

I've never listened to that i-spy split, but im going to give it a spin.

edit: just checked the turned out a punk podcast, looks like Todd Kowalski has been on it since I last checked.

dude, I love almost any band that came out of Winnipeg in the 90s!! Painted thin, swallowing shit, ISPY, the weakerthans, crazy list of epic bands

Potemkin has two levels, you can listen to it on a surface level and it might be one of their most accessible/ listener friendly albums, but if you sit down with some good headphones and really let it wash over you, it’s very intricate and super heavy, especially since they were still a 3 piece!  Lyrical themes are dark too! Bringer of greater things and cut into the earth usher in the new era of super personal and intense (but somewhat non-hardcore) Todd songs too; when the album first came out I kind of dismissed it but you can go down a rabbit hole with it.

Anyway, let’s save all my crackpot theories for the actual propgandhi thread (that I’ve been vowing to make for some time)...

***
If you haven’t heard that split, get right on it; it is perhaps my fav album of all time! Even the first track from propagandhi is super hard when compared to tracks off say HTCE. But those ISPY songs man, they are perfect, not a single track needs skipping, it’s the prefect package ... especially if you can get a physical copy!

I think freelance made a great point, every hardcore/punk kid does feel like they 'missed' something amazing by a few years but there is really amazing stuff going on right at the time they're getting into the scene and going to shows a lot(like I always wished I was at that ceremony show freelance posted but in reality I saw them a bunch in the years following and it was great but that looked like a 'better' show lol).

@Prinzy awesome to hear how you got into hardcore and dove deeper into it haha. Checked out those bands you posted, I would love to see a band cover that beastie boys song at a show haha

fuck, Sound and Fury was so fun. I wish that still happened up in Santa Barbara. I have been stupid and never went to one of the more recent years that happened in LA

random nostalgia but this year was so epic and goddammit do I still love The Suicide File. They just looked like that had fun, came out wearing Hawaiian shirts and through out a bunch of blow up flamingos in the crowd lol

CONGRESS

I had the honor to design a 30 year anniversary boxset for these guys.
Completely sold out. And i LOVE this band.

These dudes are Belgian (H8000), and were the originators of "edgemetal".
Straight edge lyrics with metal/hardcore music.

No one had really done it back then in Europe ... and people were disgusted when they first heard it. This didn't ft the hardcore mentality in the eyes of the gatkeepers. But they invented a new genre, and that's why they're known worldwide now.

Sick band.

REGRESSION

Straight edge band from Belgium, h8000 area.
HEAVY as hell, especially if you know this is from 1996!

Live video I filmed a few years ago (reunion show that was in the works for a while, but it took some time because the bassist had cancer):

TRUE COLORS

Md 2000's youthcrew from Belgium.
INCREDIBLE band.

**Eric Ozenne Appreciation Post**

This is going to be a long cheesy post and I apologize in advance. Recently I listened to and read an interview with Eric Ozenne and found out I had a lot in common with him, and the the nerve agents are my all time favorite band (followed very closely by AFI and Redemption 87) doesn’t hurt.

On a personal level, some of common ground we share I just learned about: he was a total skate rat, and a hardcore kid from a young age, then he joined the marine corps after high school and was in the infantry, when he was deployed to Japan he would hang out with other hardcore kids in an abandoned barracks and mosh around, break shit, and listen to records. I did literally the exact same thing in Japan, in possibly the same abandoned barracks, with 4 buddies and we called it the portal to hell. But we weren’t straight edge, we were drinking while doing this (obviously).

This post is clearly due to the fact I loved his music for years but also because learned we have so much in common, and that made me super stoked and wanted to share.

@freelance The Nerve Agents are the only band I have heard out of the ones you listed - going to check the rest out! I saved the Redemption 87 album to my apple music to listen to this week. I was surprised it was on there because apple music sucks for the most part lol

Where did you read that interview at? It's so cool when you find some connection outside of music, with a musician that makes their stuff feel even more relatable and you end up liking/appreciating their art even more-so. gives it more meaning for sure!

I am currently reading this book "Mutations" by Sam Mcpheeters of Born Against, Wrangler Brutes, Mens Recovery project and it is so damn good. It's not the typical "history of hardcore" book. It's just random chapters about random bands he likes/interviews with members of the bands to get more of an in-depth look at people's lives and point of view of the history they helped create. I couldn't recommend it enough for anyone looking to nerd out on punk/hardcore/music in general

He has interviews/chapters about: The Crucifucks, Aaron Cometbus, The flying lizards, No Trend, and a ton of other bands. I am only about halfway through currently

@Huell Howser Dude, if you like the nerve agents, especially their self titled, you will love Redemption 87. I prefer Redemption’s self titled over their second, all guns poolside.

Here is the link to the interview I read: https://www.noecho.net/interviews/eric-ozenne-unit-pride-redemption-87-nerve-agents

Here is a link to the podcast interview I heard: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1XIUIAVSpztjpe16zIqoND?si=JBESvUR2Ts-X1BVcX5_ogA

Side note, 185 Miles South is a fucking incredible podcast for hardcore nerds. It’s hosted by Zack Nelson who was singer of in control and retaliate. He’s like a *nardcore* savant. Being from the Harbor Area, I’ve never been crazy about nardcore (there was some weird beef that existed when I was a kid) except for downpresser and minus, so I just sort of tune out some of that stuff, but they did a 3 hour long deep dive on 90’s youth crew cohosted with Posi Chris from Champion and Dan Sant from Over My Dead Body that blew my fucking mind and introduced me to a lot of shit and reminded me of a lot stuff I forgot, I’ll link that too. Worth the listen!

Dude holy shit that looks amazing! I get paid tomorrow and I’m buying it first thing.

I’m not crazy about this wave of Santa Cruz bands, mostly because I’m older and I can own that. But, I love Sammy, and will support whatever that kid does. He’s from my hometown, and when I was in screamo band he used to go to damn near every fucking show we played before he moved to Santa Cruz, or he would come home for a long weekend and see us, would buy every piece of merch, and generally was just such a nice kid. Despite the fact I’ll probably never play this record, I’m stoked that his bands are getting support from this generation.

I’ll just keep being old and listening to my generations Santa Cruz bands.

Also @Huell Howser i picked up mutations and haven’t been able to put it down, it’s absolutely unreal how good it is. The opening was like a hardcore kid writing Kerouac, but doing it realllllly fucking well.
