I had to pull up images of the original 808 and switch between browser tabs to see any differences between it and the 808L. Head scratcher of a decision.
It’s not supposed to be a completely different shoe. It’s a finessed version of the previous one. That’s why it’s 808L and not 707 or wtvr.
I guess they use a less dense foam, which makes it more flexible/less heavy, and removing the lace loops in the front, which in my opinion are a bit over engineered, allows them to drop the price (I think I recall
@rothdigga saying those are less expensive than the regular 808).
