I thought that east coast thing was cool when dudes would cut a sliver of the grip away at the bottom side of the board...but I never understood why it was done.
I never knew this was an East coast thing, but makes sense because i do it. I always did it to tell the difference from nose and tail, still carry out the tradition to this day.

Edit: also always only black grip. other shit is whack.

Do people still do the "G-Stripe?" (The off center tape job that left a half inch or so of one edge bare)

That was huge around 1999.
[close]

i've heard people calling that the "east coast line" nowadays
[close]

I always hear "EMB stripe"

it's always been "philly grip" to me, but maybe that's just local bias

Gou Miyagi is on the right track

[close]

didn;t he do this to save his shoes cause there like 3x more in Japan?
[close]

Shoes are hardly 3 times more expensive over here. Maybe he was poor at the time or maybe it's just cuz he's Gou. Either way skating without griptape, and doing the tricks he does, is no joke!

He probably has a million stories. One of the things I've read is that he does it to prevent damaging spots with darkslides.

I've definitely been a bit more on the crazy side with my grip lately, a bit of pink here and there, some clear, some cutouts etc when I have ideas I want to try. I think most of it comes from me getting a bit bored with straight black grip for so many boards. Since I'm switching boards so often, and the board graphic is changing, might as well do something a little different to the top from time to time. For me, it's not that distracting, doesn't affect my skating at all, it seems to distract people around me more. Can't go wrong with straight black though.

Plain black is never acceptable. When you're skating fast and doing lines yo need an indicator so you know what end is the tail

To each his own I guess, I personally like to add some patterns/designs here and there especially if there's a rad top graphic I'm trying to keep visible.

This shit has been bothering me for at least 6 months:

In his BobShirt interview, Pappalardo refers to 'World Grip.' I'm assuming this has something to do with what the world industries camp skaters did with griptape in the early 90's, however, I'm not old enough to have been skating then. For some reason, I want to say that it's cutting the grip tape so that the concaved part of the board is not covered with griptape. I feel like this sounds absolutely nuts, but seems like It'd be much more feasible to do back in the early 90's-pre 8.0 board era...

If it isn't that, perhaps the reason I always assumed that's what he meant was because one his griptape in that nollie heelflip frontside noseslide in that line at LOVE looked so sick the 1,000s' of times I watched that part right after I started skating.

Tl; dr - What does Popps mean when talking about 'World Grip' doe?
For someone w.no signature ur awfully hostile, & that is why I do this

Kids go crazy for glitter grip here. It seriously looks like a 1st grade art project. I'll snap a pic when I get into the shop.

I didn't see Pappalardo's interview but I've been skating since the late 80's and if he's talking about what I think, "World grip" was die cut griptape that World Industries released in the late 80's/early 90's (pre Love Child) that had either a cut out devil pitchfork or a silhouette of the Morton Salt girl.

Oops, now I watched the interview and it doesn't sound like he's referring to the die cut grip from back then. Maybe it was a term used among his crew of friends back in the day referring to a way to cut grip but I don't know outside of what I remember World actually selling in those days.

I always thought the "I do it to separate the nose from the tail" card was complete bs. I have always been able to tell just from it feels standing on it or how rounded one side gets from skating compared to the other........but seriously does anyone know how the 'east coast line' originated? Please don't tell me that it was to know which side was the nose etc....

Probably to make it easier to flick off for kickflips and other flip tricks since there is less grip in the corner? That's just my guess.
And it's always gotta be solid black for me with no lines or cutouts. I use a coloured bolt up front so I don't need no lines to help me differentiate the nose from the tail.

I always thought world grip was the three patches of grip because you couldn't find a sheet long enough to grip the whole board. But yeah, I do remember the line down the right-hand side. I always do all black over the bolts with a very thin vertical/ horizontal line so that I can differentiate nose from tail

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

I dig graphic grip from time to time depending on the deck i pick at the moment, but graphic grip has gotten way out of hand! Kids at my shop will rip off their old grip on old chipped decks just for a new graphic grip or color or whatever, they cant wait for a new deck! ??? ??? ??? drives me nuts. It's become an essential component of your board! but ya know whatever gets you hyped to skate i guess..... ? ;D ;D

Isn't colored/graphic grip said to be less grippy than black? I never really fucked with it for that reason.

This board talks about everything except skateboarding

Newcomer to skateboarding but 26 years old and you have to realize skateboarding is for the most part a young mans game. So im sure this board is filled with all age types but the ones asking questions like which trends are cool and which arent are probably very young. Just my 2 cents.

Not knocking young ones either. Some of the most talented skateboarders ive seen are very young. But you wont catch a 25 year old asking if its okay to put flowers on his board because he thinks hell change skateboarding culture..

I see your point and Im not trying to argue, but when I started this thread I stated my personal opinion on the topic right away before I asked what everyone elses opinion was......As you stated earlier, "Just my 2 cents".
