Title: Motorcycles
Post by: All Hail Wu Welsh on October 27, 2009, 08:49:30 PM
I've noticed there are a bunch of people into motorcycles on here but no motorcycle thread.  Post pics of of your rides, good motorcyle blogs/websites, pics of some sweet cycles, tales/plans of epic rides etc.  I currently don't have a motorcycle, but am starting to save and will hopefully have enough once the weather gets warmer, I have my eyes set on either a triumph boneville or daytona preferably from the years 73-79. Anyways here are some good blogs i occasionally check.

http://4qconditioning.blogspot.com (http://4qconditioning.blogspot.com)- im sure everyone knows this one

http://www.czombieblog.com/ (http://www.czombieblog.com/)- another motorcycle blog run by skaters

http://vise22-satanscrate.blogspot.com/ (http://vise22-satanscrate.blogspot.com/)- this one is mostly in japanese but still has some sick content.

I've posted this pic before, but it's the best I have.  This is me and Bad Motorscooter.  She's a 2001 Triumph Bonneville T-100 Centennial Edition.  Painted Lucifer Orange and Gun Metal.  She's totally stock.

I had my eye on the brand new Norton Commando 961 SS, but it looks like it will go for about 17k, which is WAY to much for me.  So I will wait it out.  She's a pretty one too.

the DL rides an '81 harley sportster and an '85 honda rebel.  the sportster is some pretty scary shit and is a work in progress.  the rebel was a work commuter that is fun to beat on.  if anyone wants to learn, find a friend who has a 250 size cruiser and learn on that.  light shit that you won't murder yourself on too hard.  this rebel is pretty much indestructable.  the tank is all beaten from drunk college kids tipping it over in my parking lot.  the sportster will get sold as soon as i find a BMW r90.  that triumph is fucking sick hate.

i've been wanting to get a bike but i live in LA and don't necessarily want to die.  if it weren't for other drivers, and shitty roads it might be more doable.   when i see bikes cruising through the middle of traffic it does make my morning commute seem more appealing

nice bike HATE.  that's pretty much my 1st choice for what i'd want to get (except in black)

You sir, have good taste.

Thinking of buying one of these

A pal of mine is selling 2. He also has one of these which I also fancy..

Greeves scottish trials, proper vintage trials bike and at £1400, is the cheaper option, but will need making road legal, lights and such.

Damn kinky john.  You also have good taste!

I've been into bikes forever.  My first vehicular accident was on a motorcycle.  I was 4 and riding on the gas tank of my dad's bike on some fire trails in the california hills and lost it in some loose dirt.  I don't give a shit about going fast, I am all about style, and cafe racers are where it is at!  BSA, Triumphs, Nortons.... motherfucking BRITISH STEEL!  actually the other day I found this dope Royal Enfield painted flat olive green.  So stylish.  Tried to talk the dude into letting it go and I was wasted, but no luck.

i love BSA's... but parts for the classic british bikes are freaking expensive...

hate, is flat olive green the same colour as british racing green... if so that is a mighty fine colour

Virtually every bike here is a crotch rocket with a few harleys scattered throughout.  They just aren't my style at all, and I don't care about going that fast.  Also-- I like the british bikes because they are kinda unique, not many people have them, especially where I live.

This is my roommates bike

Ducati Hypermotard

Not really my style, but he is able to go fast and sit upright which he has to because he broke his back a year ago and can't lean that far over anymore
where i live now, there's a kid kicking around on that same ducati.  i almost too him out a few weeks ago when he ran a 4way stop sign.

exactly why i'm not into them

i saw the immediate after math of a wreck on campus where a guy was just riding his bike through campus and some other guys turned without looking and hit him and the guy was lying there in the middle of the street dead when i came up. if he was in a car he would have walked away from it, infact the guys that hit him fled the scene.

but i don't want to shit on this thread, really sick bikes in here. i just don't have the balls for it.

I watched a guy totally wreck his crotch rocket and eat shit directly in front of me I was so close i got hit with shrapnel from his bike, but it was completely his fault.  Around here guys that drive the type of bikes bobbito posted are always meathead guidos who don't know what the fuck they are doing, so i've learned to resent sport bikes and on top that i think they look like shit.

i have never had a desire to drive. cars always seemed lame and not much of a necessity in a city. but motorcycles im down for. once im out of school and have some disposable income i would much rather get a motorbike then some run of the mill car. these 2 bad boys are beauties, but im pretty sure i will never own either

I can't change your opinion about the bikes but I can see where you're coming from about the guidos. Not too much of a fan myself, especially since I live in a town crowded with guido bros from NJ and eastern MA, but I always wanted one of these little crotch rockets and I'm a Honda guy haha so I guess those two sorta go hand-in-hand. To be honest, after this thread, I'm liking these Triumphs thought I guess I just never see them around here

it seemed like a bad summer for bikers, either that or the news just covered more bike crash stories. it seemed every other week was a dude getting killed by an SUV pulling out infront of them or crossing their lane.

sport bike dude bit it hard the other day. Left a bar drunk, his friends stopped him down the road and took him and his bike home. he took it out again an hour later.  he ran into the back of a truck whilst going 105mph.  the truck was going the speed limit of 35mph.  they found parts of him all over some ladie's yard.  completely his fault but just a weird way to do it.

riding in LA must be tough for any of you that do it.

about 10 years ago i bought one of these-- a 1975 bmw 60/6, but mine was silver. fausto came with me to check it out when i bought it, and for that reason alone i wish i still had it. it ran so nice, was really fun to ride. i bought it when i lived in the burbs and loved riding it through the hills and the country lanes, but when i moved to SF i felt like i was about to get smashed at every turn, people just didn't see me on it in the city, so i sold it. used the money to buy a 1976 bmw 2002 car, which turned out to be the worst thing i ever bought. paid $2000 for it, a year later i'd put $6000 more into fixing it (including a new engine) over and over, and sold it for $2000. always kinda wished i'd just kept the bike, but probably would have sold it by now anyhow. still love looking at cool bikes, but don't plan on owning another one anytime soon.

Here's my stable:
1980 xl250
(http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii29/DukeJosie/bikes/0520091822.jpg)
Such a fun bike to cruise around town and trail ride with. You can go anywhere with it.
The rest of my shit is all off-road. I used to race quite a bit of motocross in my mid 20's. I KNOW... bring on the hate.
my race bike: 2004 CRF250
(http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii29/DukeJosie/bikes/walden592100copy.jpg)
my pit bike: crf50

My son's bike: 1986 Jr50

Play bike: 1986 DR125

1972 Honda K2 Z50:
I love this bike... I've put a lot of time and money into restoring it. Super fun ride.

Off road is my preference. Like a bunch of you have said, it's the other guy on the road that scares the shit out of me. That and DEER. DEER freak me the fuck out when I'm on the road bikes.

Nope british racing green is that really nice hunter green color, very classic color for British bikes.  Flat olive would be a non gloss paint and it's like olive green.

Here is a similar Royal Enfield to the one I was looking at.

Whenever I am done with the Army, I'll probably load up a backpack and split for 6 months to a year and try and hit all four corners of the country.

I love that thing, I remember finding it a while ago and drooling over it.  I love the cafe racer style bikes.  Ive never ridden a bike before though, they kind of scare me.  It would probably be fun to rip around back roads and stuff, but anywhere where theres traffic would be sketchy.

What the fucking hell is that thing? think I want one.

Hate, if you do a bit of googling, there's shit loads of ex military Enfields  in, and starting to come out of India. You can pick them up for about £700/$1000 + shipping, there built like fucking tanks and will run for ever, a few lads over here run them in the winter just for hacking about on.

Even though they are scary as fuck, I've always been into bikes.
My dad was a Harley guy his whole life, and built custom bikes at one point.
I would love to get me a fat Harley for cruising, and something like a GSXR 600 for going fast.

So about a year ago my roommate's boss gave him this old Kawasaki 250 LTD. I'm not sure exactly what year it is, but I know it's early 80s. Anyways, it didn't run when my roommate's boss gave it too him, and it's been sitting in our backyard ever since. Now my roommate is moving, and giving to me aka, just leaving it in the backyard when he goes. Anyways, I don't know much about motorcycles aside from that they're totally badass, and how to ride it down the street. Where would you fellas recommend I start in on trying to fix this bad boy? Summer is about here, and if I could be riding by the end of it I'd be hyped.

Whoa, what is that?!

Triumph Speed Triple

They also make one that looks similar called the Street Triple, which has the same 675 motor as the Daytona.

I thought it might be one of those, but I usually stick to their older classic models.  I ride a Bonneville T100, myself and generally only know about that and the other older British bikes like Nortons and BSA's, but that one is pretty dope!

I used to live near a Triumph dealer and I just fell in love with the unique sound of the that triple engine.  I just didn't have the funds for one at the time.  The Thruxtons are pretty cool too.

Empty fuel tank, fill with new fuel, clean carbs, clean/ replace spark plugs, oil change, new battery, try to start it. Start with the small stuff and see if ya can get it running. If it won't start, evaluate how badly you want to ride and how much money you're willing to throw at it to get it safe to ride. Just from a quick look at that pic, there's a whole laundry list of stuff of that needs to be replaced.

I got new bike the other day.
it's a 2004 yamaha sr400. They are great bikes, they’ve barely changed for the 30years or so yamaha has been making them.
i plan to customize it little by little when i get some available funds. If i was really rich i would love to find an old BSA to restore, but i guess for my first bike building project, the yamaha will have to do

The only bikes I really like are vintage, especially pre- WWII, and british bikes. My favourites are the Ariel Square Fours:

They have a pretty unique sound because of the straight cut gears that connect the dual crankshafts together. This guy at a british car show had a 1000cc 1934 model and it was just badass.

Hot-rodding a Norton Commando is on my list of things to do. One day.

Are cafes getting more popular in the states?  Typically I only like British bikes but that BMW is dope.  We should start a PALS motorcycle gang.  Call it something like the Ton-Up PALS and our logo is a kitten with a huge weiner photoshopped on him riding an Ed Roth sthe style skateboard.  Kinda do him up like Rat Fink.  Oh shit!  To the sketchpad!
haha fuck yeah

I guess i've been seeing more cafes recently...it's a lot of hip kids though which sucks.

It was actually a 150cc, that battery cover plate is a replacement as is the gas tank; I got hit by another motorist from the side at like 100km/hr.

Terrifying shit, the gas tank exploded and I couldn't walk for like 4 days because I landed on my tailbone.

The other guy broke his shoulder blade and completely fucked up his face, fucking idiot.
I'm not fluent in Spanish either so I ended up getting most of the blame, being a gringo and all.
Corrupt fucking cops in small town Peru, they put me in a cell for the night until the guy who's hostel I was staying in came over with his Peruvian friend to get me out. It was right on the border with Ecuador and the only other person in there was a female drug mule who was like crying most of the time and then going ape shit at the cops any time they'd offer her food or water.

Anyway, crazy days. Fully worth it though.

For any of you guys who know a thing or two about bikes, what are my options if I'm just looking for a small displacement bike? I'm talking like, anywhere from 50cc toys to maybe 200cc. I think scooters have taken over that market these days, but I don't think they're as fun.

Was super fun. Small bikes are great for zipping through the city.

Two factors that completely go against buying something old that'll potentially bleed my wallet dry. I don't even know if parts are easy to come by.

There's a dude on craigslist who has an old '75 CB125 that looks really nice.

I think if I had the resources and time, I would build it up like a baby cafe racer like this:

My uncle tours thousands of miles alone. Colorado to northern Alaska, and Colorado to just north of the panama. He taught me to ride on a gsxr 1000 in a parking lot, then a road, then a race track, in about a week. Dudes also building a house by himself in the rockies right now.

Parts are generally pretty easy to come across for those old Hondas.
I needed a new gas tank and clutch cable to get mine running & got them both on eBay inexpensively.

Go for it.

I ride around on a tu250, and it serves my purposes really well. I only take it out on the highway early in the morning though when I gotta get somewhere cause upwards of 75 it gets a little iffy.

Don't have a picture but mines stock so it looks a lot like this,

Just got this a few days ago.  My first motorcycle.  It's a 1972 Honda SL125.  I have been riding it nonstop since I got it, and had the best ride yet this morning.  The weather was absolutely perfect, the trees beautiful colors, and I felt perfectly in-tune with the machine for the first time.  It was one of the best feelings I have ever had.  I officially have the bug, I've been dreaming about riding it every night!

The caf? racer is a motorcycle that has been modified for speed and handling rather than comfort. Caf? racers' bodywork and control layout typically mimicked the style of contemporary Grand Prix roadracers, featuring an elongated fuel tank and small, rearward mounted, humped seat. A signature trait were low, narrow handlebars that allowed the rider to "tuck in" to reduce wind resistance and offered better control when in that posture.
so a cafe racer is the fixie of the motorcycles?

Built a bunch of old Hondas. Super fun little bikes and fucking bulletproof. Great way to get into bikes since they're very forgiving, simple and cheap.

Here's a few.

Here's my first one. When I bought it ($500)

1st mods
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/FullTilt151/P4120020.jpg)

2nd mods
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/FullTilt151/img046-1.jpg)

Final mods before I blew the motor.

Stripped it back down. Punching it out just to clean up the cylinders, probably .005. New valves, recut the seats and a lite port job. Electro ignition and probably switch to a 2in1 pipe.

Bought this one for 50 bucks. Sold for 700.

FullTilt151 - 004.mp4 (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v639/FullTilt151/?action=view&current=004.mp4)

Here's the newest bike I've owned. 94 VFR. I love the whine of the gear driven cams. It's a V4 and solid as a rock. It's considered a sport touring bike, but it's got a little bro'ness in it, but I'll fix that.

i really like the iron too..  realistically the iron is more in my price range.  i know hardcore biker dudes would say that's a chick bike, but i don't give a shit.  i like something smaller anyway, actually.  and i think of all their bikes that one has the best looks (stock) that you can get.  the blacked out engine and matte paint look fucking great.   i like the whole no chrome look...   but the 48 really does look perfect.  if the 48 came in matte black off the rack i could almost talk myself into buying one

i'm curious how far you've taken your sportster..  eventually i'd like to venture out and take some longer rides.  go camping and shit.  wondering how good or bad a longer ride would be on a Sportster

i don't know about real hardcore bikers but it's the 2nd fastest bike out of the harley factory, they are way more nimble than a big twin and also one of their longest running models. i never got the "girl's bike" thang but i guarantee you it was made up by someone who never rode one. as i said though, i am a sportster fanboy not a harley fanboy.

the sportster you should buy depends entirely on the direction you want to take the bike; if you like the blacked-out look then the iron/ nightster is for you. the 48 is great but the different front end means you are slightly limited in how you can customize it (sportsters usually have unlimited options) but their popularity means lots of companies out there will start making parts for them. i really like the 48 too though, and even though it costs a bit more than other sporties you don't really need to change that much on it (i would only really change the pipes, A/C, the forward controls to mids and the seat).

i have done long road/ camping trips on my bike and in the end it really comes down to how you set it up. getting a good seat, some performance shocks and the right handle bar/ riser combo will make a world of difference. i'm still messing with my bars to get the perfect riding position for long trips but my butt never gets sore on my current le pera seat. be aware the pre 2006 models (?) are not rubber mounted so the engine is bolted straight onto the frame. haven't ridden one but apparently they shake/ rattle a little bit more than the current range.

Yeah, I'm wondering this myself - I guess if you know how a clutch works you can probably get the thing moving? I imagine it'd be kinda awkward since it's reversed from a car, learn how to rev match all over again, etc.

I know it's not a motorcycle, but if I get this job I might throw down a few hundred bucks for an old Honda Spree and just toy around with it. Shit looks kinda fun and stupid. I don't even know how to clean a carburetor.

There's nothing like a Sportster haha. It is a 2007 XL1200L but there is no real difference. Have no baffles at all in them, just rocking them loud as shit. What did you put in your Sportster for a tuner once you put your exhaust on there? Also what Air In-Take system are you riding?

oh ok, i think the 2008 colourway was white/ grey? i ended up getting a (country specific) twin tec tcfIII. it's probably one of the techest out there. i was originally going to get a power commander et. al. but my custom shop was like, "if you're gonna do it, may as well do it right".
it (+ tuning) basically costed what a macbook pro would cost but the benefits are:
- it measures fucking everything and adjusts while you are riding (no dyno time)
- it's not a piggyback system that is just adding in more fuel
- it records how YOU ride and then after 3000kms the dealer/ my custom shop will do another fine retune so that it further suits my riding style.
- you can hook it up to your laptop and basically see EVERYTHING (steep learning curve on this one though)

but yeah, it was $$$!!! i ended up going with the S&S teardrop just cuz i love the classic look of it. plenty of other nice looking A/Cs on the market though and apparently most of them suck in more air than your engine is ever going to need so... i guess it just comes down to the one you like the look of most. here is what my bike currently looks like:

I race hare scrambles which are 2 hour long races in the woods. Really fun and really grueling. I finally got a new bike this year. 2012 RMZ250. My first fuel injected dirt bike. It's an amazing machine.

I missed this question about learning.  It's definitely a bit easier if you already understand how a clutch works, but even without that knowledge you can figure it out in a couple hours in a parking lot or a neighborhood street.    And it doesn't feel backwards, it's just a bit different.  Anything related to changing gears is on the left, anything related to braking is on the right.

That's good to hear and thanks for your insight. I figured it wouldn't be too bad if you're already comfortable with manual transmissions. I just need to quit spending money on my cars and buy a damn bike already.

hmm this is a little strange, but if you're from Western Mass, I think I've seen this bike pull into GCC?

The CB500T's are really hard to find though....especially stock ones. I am not super in to cafes, but I like vintage stock jap bikes in really good condition. Those are hard to find.

thanx for bringing this thread back, it needs more love (nice bike btw).
honda really did used to make some classic looking bikes back in the day with reliable as fuck engines to boot. i actually rode a CB 250 for my 1st few years of riding. GREAT learners bike!!!
if there was an apocalypse i would probs ride/ steal a supercub; not the fastest bike on earth but probably one of the toughest (and a lot more economical than the sporty).

this is my xs400. this was the first time it ran in 15 years.
i got it off my workmate who'd had it sitting in his garage with the carbs off and everything open.
it was a nightmare.

as you can hear, it's not running right. i'm on pods and straight pipes so i think i'll have to rejet.

i dont really take pictures of my bike because its not really nothing out of the ordinary,
but i just had to shoot this because the scenery was getting crazy.
started with a 650cc yamaha vstar in 2009 and soon moved on to this 06 sporty1200
like someone mentioned earlier, this model is a bit of a shakey fucker but i got no complaints

im undecided to either sell it and get an early 2000's nightrain to travel the country
or sell it and start a project with a rigid frame
thoughts anyone?

YAY! another sporty rider, i literally cannot get enough of sporties. 06 was the year they introduced rubber mounts right (and EFI if i remember correctly)? i guess it comes to what you want to do, sporties aren't traditionally touring bikes but they can be made into touring bikes. personally i don't really like any other model of harley (except maybe dynas) and a rigid, while they look badass, would be way too tough on my body. i rode my dad's fatboy when i was back in australia recently and it felt like a tank. he hates riding around town too but said once you are out on the open road it is a dream to ride.

what seat are you rocking btw? mustang?

Title: Re: Motorcycles
Post by: Powdered Toast Man! on June 18, 2012, 01:06:09 PM
gay imp sausage, mustang seat and it is rubber mounted but i think it isn't EFI because it has carburetors
im pretty much self thought on the parts/mechanics so i might be wrong
which usually leads me to answer my own question and hold the project until i become totally familiar and travel cross country first,
but the idea of building a bike sounds so fucking tempting and fun

yeah i agree sportsters rule and remain my fave
my other hd preference are softails but its all taste nothing really against dyna, both are my alternatives just for traveling purposes

how unrealistic is it to take one for a long trek?  as in, cross country..

My dad did a cross country trip on a '73 Kawasaki 750 H 2 Mach IV.  That's a tough bike to do that distance on, but it's totally doable.  I had another homie do all four corners of the states on a 60s Panhead back in 2008.  That's a bit sketchy though unless you're a skilled mechanic since it's an older bike.  I'm possibly going from Kansas City to Nashville next month.  Far from cross country, but it's a trip.  I'm a pussy these days though, I ride for an hour and a half and stop, stretch my legs etc.  I also am not a huge fan of trips more than 6-7 hours.

i'm thinking i'd like to do a cross country ride someday when i have time.  maybe not literally cross country but definitely covering some ground.  have no experience going long distance, i just cruise around town on my 350

This is my free 1971 CL350 Scrambler. I am hoping to get it on the road by the end of July, money pending.

A buddy had to move back east and said I could have it. Transmission isn't engaging, plugs aren't sparking, tank is the wrong size, needs new tires, maybe new suspension. Luckily I've got a few extra tanks and some know how. I don't have any plans for Cafe-ing it out. Just want to sand down the new tank and paint it flat black. I'll ride if for a year or two and get something else. These things sell for a pretty decent price out here in the bay.

Though I am not into cusomtizing it, I wouldn't mind if it looked like the one across the street from my work.

Looking into MSF courses - they're saying I need gloves, boots and my own helmet. Buying a helmet right now is too much of a commitment for me to be honest since it's going to be a long time before I even get a bike.

Yes I've tried looking on craigslist for some cheap ones to use through the MSF course but they're all way too big and still too expensive.

Perhaps I should fashion one at home using aluminum foil and tape

how much are you looking to spend on a helmet? You can find some from HCI for a pretty good price. Or HJC

Can you borrow a helmet?  The MSF course I took offered helmets to those without which was pretty cool.  I hope you get to go though, that class was extremely worthwhile AND it lowered my insurance.

save it.
they lend you a helmet, the gloves are useless for what youll do, and the instructor didnt even check if we had boots
or at least in my case
i do recommend sturdy footwear

Got a decent chunk of money saved for a sportster, so hopefully I'll have a bike to ride by the end of the year.

I can't even leave anything stock so I'm sure I'll ride it for a bit then pull it all apart and get to work. Maybe make it a rigid frame.

I agree,
old hondas are cheap, and that's what makes them appealing to a first time buyer (that and the fact that they are extremely easy to modify)
but get ready for a headache if you aren't mechanically inclined.

At least you can still get parts brand new direct from Honda. But if you can't turn a screw, then a vintage bike isn't the best choice.

Agreed.  But if you're willing to learn, you can make it an enjoyable journey/ hobby.  I bought my first bike ('75 CB360 couple pages back) not running and after messing with it, downloading/buying manuals, a couple long tips to the mechanic, hundreds of dollars in parts, I finally got it insured and inspected for the road about 2.5 months after the initial purchase.  I have a brain and am eager to learn and I saved myself some money either doing things myself or having a knowledgeable neighbor lend a hand in exchange for some beer.  It was pretty much a gigantic headache for a long time because the bike sat for so long.  Having that said, the bike now runs rad and I'll take it all over town even when I'm bored.  One of the best decisions I ever made as a first bike was an old Honda CB.  I love everything about it.

Damn this was a let down but good to know because I was planning on getting an older Honda. I think my plan will be too get a Honda Rebel, get used to a bike and have it mastered (I already know its gonna take a long time before I get it down). Then move up to a Triumph Scrambler.

I have a newer Honda and have had to do a few things with basically no know-how and it's been a bit frustrating. worth it though if you can get someone to help who knows what he's doing and can tell you what you're doing wrong.

nothing wrong with getting an old honda.  old hondas are fucking awesome.  it's just if you are looking for something extremely reliable and/or it's your primary means of transpo then maybe not best option.

i'd like to learn how to work on bikes more but i really don't have a lot of free time.  i'm a pussy and take my bike to a shop, but i'm lucky to have several shops near my house, so it's not too much of a pain

I realize that question made me seem super ignorant... Ive had dirtbikes and shit so I know how to turn a wrench, I could get help from my dad too if its something bigger, hes had bikes all his life.

I guess the real question is; is it worth it still, or should I look into something newer? I dont want to spend as much time in the garage as on the street with that thing. If not, anybody got tips? I dont want to spend too much on my first bike, plus I kinda just want it to be gritty looking.

Wanted to bring this back to the first page for the dudes contemplating taking the MSF course.

I just took the course over the weekend. It was pretty good and I believe it helps a lot for people that are new to bikes. I had never even sat on a motorcycle prior to the class, but the way it is set up it gets your comfortable with the bike pretty quick.

Just dont drop the bike at the end during the 4 evaluations.

First bike:

My brother went and got his license a couple weeks ago, been thinking about doing the same.  He said he had to take it in some of the worse rain he has experienced.  He said there was a lot of standing water, even though the test regulations said no standing water.  One guy even slid out and people, including two old ladies failed because they would not take the turn at more than 20 mph or so.

Anyways, here are some bikes I have always thought were pretty sick:

what's the farthest you've traveled?
i constantly come and go from san diego to imperial valley/ mexico (around 120 miles), that's it
i'm graduating from college this 16 and i'm thinking about riding solo to SF for few days afterwards and visit some non-skate friends.
moto general tune up/ check up aside, i would appreciate some words of wisdom from some experienced fellow slap pals
the road, my bike, heads up, anything will be appresh.

any bay area dudes, i'll buy you a beer or two once im there  :)

it's an 06 sporty 1200cc by the way if that matters  (pretty stock at the moment, but stoked nonetheless)

I rode out to Joshua Tree from Orange County. That's the farthest I've gone but I've been wanting to go up to Big Sur and to SF. My buddy's claiming a trip up to Oregon but seeing as he doesn't have a bike right now, that probably won't happen for a while.

that's around the same distance I've ever done many times as well over here. Oregon sounds super rad and fucking eternal, it gets me psyched thinking of it
how big is your engine? my 1200 feels a bit forced and shaky when it goes a bit beyond 90, that's why i hesitated very long rides in the past but i'm feeling like growing a pair and just going for it

Should be heavy enough going up the 1 with the wind, but yeah I would just cruse it, take your time. You arent going 90 on that road any way unless you are on a fucking R1 with a deathwish or something.

I thought I would bring this thread back from the dead

I bought an old 2 stroke junker to play with

Its a 92 RMX250.. it hasn't been started for over a year so I am hoping it doesn't need a full engine rebuild.

I just cleaned/rebuilt the carburetor and changed the transmission oil...  the tank is full of rust, so an ill fitting inline filter will have to do until I get some more time to stick some hanasakuG in there an clean it.

Finished putting it all back together last night... going to get some fuel today and see if it starts

↑Noice! Certainly brings back memories of being a kid and being stoked on all those Japanese trail bikes (I had an XR for the record).
Cool that your son is helping you too ... I actually recently got rid of the harley because a) I have a family now and b) I wasn't really riding it due to a). My wife isn't really anti-motorbikes or anything so I'll eventually get another when he grows up but I'm really grateful that my dad taught me how to ride when I was a kid (he bought me my first bike when I was 4) so I'm kinda conflicted...

Thanks for resurrecting the thread. Cool that this bike was one of the last posted, I have a Matchless G80s which is practically the same bike with a few different specs like jampot suspension instead of rigid frame, higher gear ratios for road use and some other bits and pieces. This is a sweet example.

Japanese trail bikes are great... especially two strokes...

I got the engine started at 6 this morning (my neighbours are going to be stoked when I start riding to work every morning)
went for a quick ride round the block and realized that the brakes don't work... have to change the fluid on the weekend...
and need to fiddle with the carby a bit more....

My son loves my other bike he makes me push him round the block every weekend numerous times... although he is not the best assistant... being 1 and a half his attention span is rather short (he normally just runs around in the shed drawing on the walls)

riding a bike in L.A. is beyond gnarly
[close]
[close]

i've been wanting to get a bike but i live in LA and don't necessarily want to die.  if it weren't for other drivers, and shitty roads it might be more doable.   when i see bikes cruising through the middle of traffic it does make my morning commute seem more appealing

nice bike HATE.  that's pretty much my 1st choice for what i'd want to get (except in black)

Haven't gone through the entire thread, but I daily drive a motorcycle in LA. It is not that bad, but I don't know anything different. Riding a motorcycle in LA is the best thing ever for the following reasons:

- The weather is always nice (except some mornings it gets into the 30s and 40s in the winter, so warm weather gear is crucial. Windchill at 17 degrees for an hour commute is not fun).
- Spectacular roads. You'll want to take the scenic route. All the canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains offer incredible twisties with practically zero intersections. It's like a motorcycle skatepark. Also, Angeles Crest Hwy is great. So is Glendora Mountain Road and surrounding areas. Experiencing these places on a motorcycle is so different than going by car.
- Access to HOV lanes.
- Access to Express Lanes (which are almost always empty)
- Lane Splitting legal. You get everywhere twice as fast.
- Park anywhere the hell you want. You can park between cars and not pay. I never have to think about parking ever, making everything easy. I can go anywhere, no matter how busy it is, and have the best parking spot possible instantly.

Really man, do it. If you are thinking about it, you're ready. Take the MSF course and get cheaper insurance rates. Been riding every day for a year now and still not sick of it at all. My commute is the best part of my day! Not the bane of my existence. Every morning I go outside and see my bike sitting there waiting for me is like Christmas day over and over again.

The thing is I am short like 5'7-5'8 short and only weigh 140 on a good day. Most bikes I like have a seat height of about 30-32". Ive been looking at the yamaha sr400 and bikes like it. anyone have any suggestions of bikes like the yamaha sr400 that might fit me or any other suggestions about being a smaller human tryin to ride a bike besides getting a smaller seat?

the newer SR400's are cool, a lot of builders take those and make very nice trackers out of them. an older SR500 would be a fun bike too. The Suzuki TU250x is a cool new cafe style bike with a low seat. for the most part, i don't know dick about newer bikes though.

get yourself an old CB350 or an older yamaha or something. they've got better engines than the newer ones, no bullshit. i weigh 170 and am 5' 11" and have plenty of space on my CB360.

Fun to ride around on but they aren't the most powerful machines in the world and being a big single you get pretty sore from the vibrations after long rides... that being said I still like the little thing

I've been riding for just a bit over 2 years now.  I currently have a 2013 Yamaha FZ8 that I use as a commuter, back road bike, and short haul tourer (2-3 days/sub 1000 miles).  It works pretty well for weekend rides to the Oregon Coast, but I do want to upgrade in the next year, or two, to a Yamaha Super Tenere 1200.  As it is a way better tourer and can handle fire road/forest service road explorations.  If anyone is hesitant on getting a bike, I'd say go for it.  As long as you have good instincts and aren't a complete idiot with the risks you take, you should be fine.

I'm about to call and sign up to take the beginners MSF course and hopefully get my endorsement

How difficult/easy is it? I'm not completely oblivious to the principles of operating a motorcycle since I drove a manual car for a few years and I ride a bicycle (relatively) frequently.

Probably going to order a cheap helmet since they don't provide them for some reason

Riding season's about winding down so plenty of time for me to save up for a bike+gear come next spring/summer.

I'm about to call and sign up to take the beginners MSF course and hopefully get my endorsement

my MSF class they provided helmets. get a bilt helmet off cyclegear or something, you can usually score a 3/4 helmet for a good price.

it's pretty easy, and it's good for you. helps you mentally prepare for riding even more than you could imagine. 100% worth it.

buy an old honda. or a triumph. ride old shit.

The course is easy and you're going to have fun taking it, just pay attention to what they say and don't do anything stupid.

I'm going to disagree with Concerned Parent but only because I did exactly that when I started out. I bought a leather jacket, some Levi's, a 3/4 helmet, and army surplus gloves and called it good on gear. Got a 1978 Honda CB550 for a first bike.

Maintenance on vintage bikes is annoying as hell if you don't have the mechanic skills or you really just want to focus on riding.
After low siding twice on a Harley, I got proper gear: full face helmet, full armored jacket, armored pants, armored boots, and proper gloves. You can still get fucked up in the right gear, but not nearly as bad as without it. And 40% of head injuries on a motorcycle happen to the face. Research the gear, research your first bike, make an informed decision to save yourself time/money down the road.

This is worth a read: https://rideapart.com/articles/crash-tested-stylish-safety-gear

But that's just, like, my opinion.

Full face helmets FTW; sure you may not look like the hardest dude out there but none of that will matter if you fall.
My dad ALWAYS taught me gloves/ boots/ jacket should be bare minimum and while I didn't always wear boots, I would never get on my bike with gloves or a jacket. Speaking of my dad, he just bought a 2015 bonneville t100 and DAMN! it's a nice looking bike. Looks like I still won't ride for a few years but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss my sporty :'(

bilt 3/4's are only $29. that's why i mentioned it.

my kit:

biltwell gringo (http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/qTAAAOSwmtJXYVxb/s-l225.jpg)
RSD tracker jacket w/armor (http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/productimages/300/2012-Roland-Sands-Design-Tracker-Jacket-Ranger-634690501616699316.jpg)
saving up joesjunk $$$ for some saint jeans
eastland 8" boots

if you're gonna full blown do the riding thing, get the right gear.

and yeah if you just wanna ride shell out the cash for a newer bike. or buy an old honda and join the occult of working on your bike weekly.

Sorry for the bad pic. I used to have an '85 Honda Rebel, sold it last year. The perfect starter bike, they say. Was inspired by Max Schaaf's 4Q blog, made a comment that I couldn't afford a bike and someone said it was possible, just check online. So I did and eventually found this. It needed repairs and even though insurance was cheap, I wasn't riding it all that much. Sounds lame but I didn't like shifting up and down all the time either. I'd drive it at night to avoid traffic. I have my full motorcycle license as well. It was difficult but fun, I'd like to get another motorcycle, or a Stella automatic scooter.

Full Face Helment yes. And no, you actually look fucking sick if you get a cool helmet in my opinion. I have a biltwell gringo as well, and i think it looks cooler than any open face helmet. I also have biltwell goggles and the two go together really well. There are a lot of ugly helmets out there though. Just get a simple retro styled one and you're fine. My friends that ride call me a hipster for my helmet but I don't care, theirs are ugly.

Also your dad is super cool for getting a t100!

So I called the only place in town offering MSF courses right now, it's through one of the local dealerships - was quoted $299.00 for the two day beginners, plus the price of a helmet comes out to about $400 total

Fuck. That.

I know for a fact that the community college has the course for $50.00 but they're not doing it until next spring. Guess I'll wait.

yeah mine was $350. it's gonna cost you money too to do your road test so honestly in the end, you're dropping bread to be able to ride.

i pay $70 a year to keep my bike insured. believe me it's worth it. these guys will teach you more than you can imagine for riding-wise and mentally. i know in NY they're trying to make it mandatory to get a license here.

also, don't know if i've ever posted a picture of my ride but this is my daily:

so beautiful! do you commute to work on her? ever have any problems? I've been thinking about getting a late 70s cb550 or cb750 but I'm scared of ending up on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere (I spend a lot of time in the middle of nowhere on my bike).

Would love to hear your experiences as a vintage bike owner (good and/or bad). Most of the articles I read online are heavily biased one way or the other.

haha thanks man! appreciate it. i ride 2-3 days to work a week and to be honest, other than one small electrical freak-out where everything seemed to stop working because a couple connections came loose, the thing has been nothing but a dream for me. it runs really well and i've gone on 250 mile trips on it and never had an issue other than physically cracking a whole muffler in half.

as all i know are older bikes (my father is the owner of 3), they're easy to work on, fun to hang out around, parts aren't expensive, and they're just a blast...that being said they are 40 year old behemoth assholes and do sometimes decide that they don't want to be your friend. old brits will do this. triumphs, BSA's...i have friends who ride them and they're fun as fuck and shake you to high heavens but usually something catastrophic happens after you've planned your 150 mile camping trip with your friends. that being said, all these old bikes need attention, granted any bike you ride should deserve the attention every time you get on it.

if you want to get into it, do your research. find a good year of the bike you're looking for. A 550, I'd say a 75 or 78. A 750, anything with a single overhead cam is not only more reliable but more sought after, pretty much '77 and earlier. don't buy one from some guy purely because it's cheap. buy from an original owner with paperwork and make sure it's running. i bought mine not running and missing a bunch of parts and i lucked out hard when i finally got it fired up. honestly, i wouldn't pay more than $2000 for a running one of either a 750 or a 550, in pristine condition. anyone asking for more is A) probably too stubborn to barter with you and B) knows the right idiot will one day stumble along and fork over the cash without batting an eye.

so yes. i've heard hell stories. but i've also heard amazing ones. i have nothing but awesome memories on mine so far. one of my buddies has a 550 and the gaskets leak like hell and he's doing a full change out as we speak. one of my buddies has an old yamaha that the exhaust falls off of every other time he rides it. but they're fun as all hell to ride, they sound amazing, they get a lot of attention, and you get a lot of satisfaction and knowledge after a few months of wrenching on these bad boys. i say go for it. if you need help finding one shoot me a message and where you're located and i'll do my best to shoot you a couple local craigslist ad's that seem like worthy bikes for the challenge (this goes for anyone interested).

So.. I'm going to California next week and I realized I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. I'm staying for 2 months so I figured I'd buy a bike and sell it before I go home.. Could anybody clarify a few things for me though?

- Where do I even get a bike? I imagined craigslist would be stacked but it's not.. I wanna spend 2500$ tops, so maybe that's the problem? Would I be better off going to a dealership?

- What models are the most popular in the US? Preferably over 600cc's.

- What do I do about insurance? Any tips?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

well well well...good luck.

$2500 is a tight budget. you may be able to get a higher mileage ADV bike or something from a dealer...but to be honest i don't know dick about bikes made after 1990.

get something reliable, if you really don't know what you're doing or aren't handy. don't buy an old piece because it looks cool, what are you in the market for? you like vintage? enduro / dirtbike? sport bike? cruiser?

popular ones are old hondas, adventure bikes like the KLR/Honda XL, newer triumphs, older triumphs, harleys...the list goes on and on

insurance hit up dairyland auto. I've heard people get the insurance for dirt, maybe $75 for the year.

lemme know if you want any help finding something...

First of all, I just saw the picture of your cb up there and it's fucking beautiful.

Also, thanks for the good response! Haha, the "well well well...good luck" made me smile. I'm fucked.

I could maybe do 3k$ but that's pushing it, I really wasn't thinking clearly while booking those plane tickets. I have bikes here and I know my way around them a little bit but I won't have a garage or even tools so I can't really do anything, I definitely wanna go as reliable as possible. Any advice on models would be awesome.. I'm thinking Honda Shadow or Yamaha Virago. Any thoughts?

Speaking of, does anyone ride a dual sport bike and have any advice on those? I only ride old bikes at home too, but I found a dr 650 with low miles that the dealership owner would be willing to buy back from me once I go home if I wanted to. How would one of those things work on the freeway? This will be my only transportation so I'll go all over southern california on it. If that doesn't work I guess I'll try to find a Honda Shadow or something..

Good looking out with the insurance company! The place I checked was like a 3rd party insurance company and they wanted 220$ a month for full temporary insurance on like a '95 bike.. That's what I pay yearly for one bike at home so I'm not too psyched on that.

DR650 is a good ADV bike. especially if you want to rip around in the dirt a little little bit. but the suspension feels super nice on those bikes and you'd enjoy.

virago's are fucking fast from what i hear. i don't know too much of the shadow other than its a v-twin ripoff and honda makes quality bikes so i'm sure it would be reliable, but do your research.

where in CA? if you let me know what region of Craigslist to look at I'll help pick out a couple that may be good bikes...

and thanks for the CB appreciation! she's pretty and fun.

Yeah, I grew up riding motocross alot so I guess I'm more drawn towards that than one that's too heavy and can't turn.. Not sure if I can rip any dirt roads though.

I have a virago 1100 that's rebuilt here actually and I really love it, it's perfect to me. However they're not that aesthetically pleasing stock so I'm not sure how easy that would be to sell which I have to consider now..

I'll be in Mar Vista, LA. I guess I'd be willing to travel an hour or so, I might have to uber it since the bike would be my only transportation. If you have some free time and feel like doing that it would be super nice of you, I'm trying to keep track too but all the good ones seem to sell quick so I'm kinda aiming towards trying to find one the first day there. Either through craigslist or a dealership..

What size shadow are you looking at? I had a 400 and loved it but it weighed nearly the same as my dad's 1100 (USA) version of the same bike so it didn't have that much grunt when push came to shove.
If you've only got $2500 to spend, why don't you just get a beat up sr400* or something similar?

Buuump.

Recently got into riding. Just took the MSF course and I'm pretty hyped. I got an '03 crf230 that's street legal w/ lights and everything. Tryna keep it safe on the road but I've hit some "jumps" in parking lots and damn that's fun.

Question though, what's the best way to carry a board when riding?

My friend suggests tying a shoelace across the trucks and wearing it over my shoulders but that seems iffy. I'm usually not riding at speeds above 50mph though, so could be fine? I don't have a rack or anything.

im not even into bikes but damn that job sounds so awesome, would be really cool to travel and camp with a motorcycle in general, and especially on some one elses dime.

backpack with board straps (that holds the board vertically) is the ticket...

and yes curb cuts are just as fun to hit on dirtbikes too

brixton makes a backpack with straps that come out from underneath the bag. i believe it's the "basin." i used to ride to the park on my 75 cb360 with my board like that and it usually worked out fine. unless you've got a harley and can get one of those RADRACING skate mounts. photo shows a mexican blanket for chopper cool guy points but a skateboard fits in there just fine. $21 on amazon right now.

buddy of mine was telling me how Harley pays a group of photographers and writers to travel and camp for like a year. just riding bikes harley gives them to shoot lifestyle photos and write ups for marketing material.

im not even into bikes but damn that job sounds so awesome, would be really cool to travel and camp with a motorcycle in general, and especially on some one elses dime.

shit's pretty sick.

SR500? let's see this bad boy!

I got my KLR600 back from the dickhead who stole it and almost have it completely rebuilt. you can also see the newer harley i picked up recently in the second picture. nevermind that there's fucking like, 6 bikes in there.

I put the board on a shoe lace and it was passable. Also works in my backpack. I have a rear fender rack in the mail so more storage coming soon.

One more question:

I don't have a motorcycle jacket, so far I've just been wearing a thinker canvas jacket with a hoodie, which I know is not at all ideal. Now, this sounds petty, but I really hate the styling of most motorcycle jackets. It seems you're either stuck with macho leather daddy or hi-tech dweeb. That said, I know i need protection. Does anyone have recommendations for plain looking jackets (i usually just wear a carhartt) with decent protection and pockets for armor?

Having a tough time researching this online.

Not the best idea, putting a motorcycle on the road.  Think of everyone sending texts now and shit.  It's getting to be sketchy,no?  Think of a car as a couch motorbike that has SOME protective qualities.

If you're looking for something a little cheaper than RSD this is a great deal.  Armored hoodie/denim vest combo.

Needs a new battery and shaken (車検) then it is good to go.

I "race" speced my old RMX over the summer and have to re-jet the ol' girl tonight... (Hurt my back and couldn't skate for 6 weeks... so I did some bike stuff to keep my mind of it)... she still needs a bit more work (plastics, tank, fork rebuild, spokes and an RM swing arm.) then she will be complete and I can start on my little dudes QR and my SR mods

I will take a pic tonight, seems as I am going to be stuck in the shed fiddling with carb settings

Yeah those are pretty nice. I ended up going with an armored mesh shirt thing from knox. It has CE-rated shoulders, elbow, and back protection and fits under all of my normal jackets. I also got some klim pants with knee and hip protection that look like Carhartt doublefronts.

Off road i just wear mx jersey and pants with a roost protector and skate knee pads haha. Need to get some knee braces that go into my mx boots eventually.

Here's a pic i took while i was exploring some trails last weekend.

That gas tank is already off,I'm going to make my own tank (something like a mustang tank), and basically I have to fab a subframe and wire it then it's ready to go. Stoked because I can make it mine, and I like polishing turds haha. I'll post progress as it happens!

Also, I have a box of extra shit. So if any of you guys need a desert tank, fork legs, mikuni carb, supertrapp or other exhaust mufflers PM me.

Any dirt bike folks in here? After learning on the 230 this summer I am looking to upgrade, and I've started thinkin i want a 2 stroke woods bike. KTM 150 xc-w and Husky te150 got me drooling but not sure i wanna spend the $. Are these good bikes for someone knew to 2t who's mainly interested in woods riding?

I'll prob keep the 230 around too as a buddy bike and b/c it is street registered.

XR650 is way sicker of a bike than a CB650....the only really good CB's with SOHC 350/360/550/750, the DOHC 750's and 900's were good race bikes. the cb650 and cb400/450 weren't made for all that long because they weren't all that good. my dad has a stock '03 xr650 and it's fun as fuck. this thing looks insane, curious to see what you'll do with it man!

Nice bikes straight edge.

I posted in here when I got my CRF230, which is street legal. Since getting that I got the dirt bug BAD and ended up getting a KTM 200xc-w which has been amazing. Light as fuck and a total woods weapon. Still love the 230 for a mellow dual sport right or commuting, but goddamn there's something about a two stroke.

thanks man. and yessir although it’s just a late model headlight bucket because i am having trouble finding a k model one let alone not paying an arm and a leg for it. the front wheel is actually a honda CB something from the 60s. it has two leading shoes rather than just the one so should actually work half way decent. took a little bit of work to make it fit but for what ever reason on those bikes they made them 40 hole so that part was easy

Yea the 40 hole thing is strange, but I think it works well if you want to dish the wheel. I feel you on finding affordable parts, spent a long time finding a good Aris triangle headlamp for a chopper I had and ended up with a repop...now the repop gets sold for a high ass price! Haha

My mountain ripper in front of my wifes food truck yesterday. It was so nice out, I should of kept riding but I needed a rootbeer float. Which resulted in me getting put to work.  :-\

I bought my first bike a couple years ago (V30 Magna 500), and just got a 2006 Sportster 883. Anyone got experience on Sporty’s? I’m stoked on the customization aspect and am currently kind of turning it into more of a bobber.

I have a 1200- just finished hardtailing it a couple weeks ago.

Badass. I finally got the title and registration the other day, been riding around a bit but still need insurance before I do any longer trips (or ride more in general). I’m a small ass dude and was honestly a bit spooked at first but gettin used to it and having a blast. Way smoother than the Magna lol

Mostly a trail rider but gone to the track a couple of times and had a lot of fun. Previously had a dual sport but riding on the road is pretty sketchy with all the text-and-drivers out there! I do want a plated bike again though, if only cus it opens up more riding areas.

It's a 2016 250x basically a yz250 with a kickstand, 18" rear and wide(r) range gearbox. Aluminum frame but the previous owner had it coated black. I threw the old school shroud graphics on there just cus.

Never had any issues on the track, but I am not railing corners like Eli Tomac so sidewall roll is not really an issue haha. I'm running IRC VE33s right now which aren't really ideal for track but did ok. Wore out fast on the rocks and roots we ride around here though. I'm about to put a Starcross 5 on the rear which should be better on the track.

well, since youre not tomac, you dont really need to care about what you have in the rear, its just going to spin anyway. the front is what really counts. id recommend a medium compound and a refresh on your suspension if you havent done it already. i only hear good things about the starcross. how many hours do your motor have?

I have an Frankenstein 93 RMX ... (jp ver) → SJ13 bottom end (with oil pump removed), a cylinder from the SJ14 (no more exploding power valve and better port timing) and RM head as well as RM front and rear sus

It actually works pretty well... much better than the lifeless lump it started out as

I want to do a VMX race sometime in the near future so I am restoring an 85 rm125 (taking a long long time)

And Am trying to get an2stroke MX bike bike from the late 90's early 00's but they are non existent here (all been exported out of Japan) or way out of my budget. (don't want to get a Yammy as every tom dick and harry has one.. .even though they are awesome)

do it once, do it right, take your time. i would love to see progress pictures if youre willing to share. i have a 91 kdx250. its cool but the reason i bought is because its got a plate. im in the process of converting the charging system to put out dc so i can run lights directly from the stator. im slowly building it into a supermoto(sorry, not sorry), i got custom 17" wheels from dubya that are pretty trick and im also fabricating a caliper bracket to accommodate the 300mm front rotor since nobody makes anything compatible with my forks.
if youre looking an older mx 2 stroke, id recommend an rm250. from all the magazines ive read and old dogs ive talked to, those bikes handled the best. or just say fuck all and go for a cr500 or kx500 but unless youre swole af, say goodbye to your arms.

@moneymoneymoney my buddy has a KX500... we are supposed to go riding when I get a new VAN (rona is killing that front too).. i am sure it will kill me when i do have a go on it and wheelie in every gear...

I want an 04 RM250 onwards (and have been looking for ever) or a steel framed CR250r
(but i would prefere a yellow bike.. i like yellow)

there is some pics of the 125 on my instagram dorkbert (it might be in JP or eng)... i was going to post all the pics in here when i get closer to completion... right now the engine is apart waiting to get vapour blasted... crank is off getting rebuilt (the LH side was fudged and probably caused the previous owner to blow the bike up and then leave it outside for 30years) and the rest is in the shed waiting for some love... I am friends with someone who worked at Suzuki as a chamber designer and works MX mechanic in the 70's early 80's and he is helping me with lots of things... he knows the era of bikes well and he helped design it in 83/84

through some picks up of your SM too...

well.... if were going to be flexing and name dropping, i used to work at a shop where one of the owners had a hand in the development of the xr650r(THEE baja bike) and the other owner raced flattrack bikes built by erv kanemoto in the 70's.

it sounds like youre in japan? my lifelong goal is to move to japan and work for hrc. i dont have instagram, this is the closest thing i have to social media, that shit is cancer if you ask me. ill post a few pictures of my bike later today.

Loving that this thread is turning into MX nerd talk. @moneymoneymoney my front tire is in good shape but when it comes time to change I'll be putting an mx33 back on. Fave front tire so far.

Bike has about 180 hrs total, but had a full rebuild at 115, and I'm doing the top end within a few hours. I can get a good amount of hours out of a piston since a lot of my riding is low-rpm enduro type shit. Suspension is valved for my weight and riding style.

Next big mod is putting honda brakes on the front. The stock brake is so squishy, no matter how much I bleed it. Kind of crazy how much better Honda's brake even though they're both nissin systems. Got a caliper and master from a crf450 on ebay for $60, should hopefully bolt right up.

@Andmoreagain when you do the top end, get the "d" piston. it might be called the "purple" piston. its still a standard size piston but the tolerances are on the higher end, giving a tighter fit and more power......yikes i need to stop being an armchair mechanic. heres the part # anyway 1P8-11631-00-D0

heres my bike, i dont want to go outside its too smokey where i am so this is all i have. theres a lot missing on there, i know.

Bumping this old thread for the love of motorized two wheeled vehicles.

I have a '91 Suzuki DR350. It's very reliable as long as I can get it started. Kick start only and it only seems to be getting harder to start as the miles go up. Great bike though, pretty much does it all from highway to single track. One day I'll upgrade to a DRZ400 with an electric start. I like bikes with small engines. I'd like to get a street bike in the 600 range one day too when I live in the country again.

Sick!! I didn't know they made them with the same color scheme as the 350s. Yours looks really clean too. The 650 would make a great option for my next bike too, maybe instead of a DRZ400. I think the 650 wouldn't be any worse on trails than my 350 but it would probably handle the highway way better. I can sit at about 70mph on a highway on my 350 but it really sucks. Way more adventure-style aftermarket stuff for the 650 too.
