Any opinions on Destructo? Silver? Theeve?
Typically a Thunder or Indy guy, but looking to get back into skating and feel like trying something different.
Destructo is great. Really good trucks, easily on par with the big guys in my book. Just know there's 2 models (I'm excluding the squadrons which are for big boy boards) - the D1 which is a bit higher and indy-like, and the d2 which is similar to a Thunder. I have the d2 and love them, I prefer them to thunder actually.
Silver I've never tried and never wanted to. Don't think I've ever heard anyone gush about them either.
Theeves are really good too. Sort of a weird marriage of venture-like stability on center but very tight turning like an Ace. Older generations have some qc issues but the v3 mostly fixed them. If you ever happen upon a reasonably priced set of their insane ti-hanger axle less trucks (the hanger/axle is machined from a single block of titanium) they're one of the best trucks I've skated hands down. I also have a pair ti-ax and they're great too. The axles on theeves are pretty close together so they pair best with longer wb trucks in my opinion - I don't like them on 14" wb but 14.25 is magic.
What's the deal with Film trucks? Seeing some buzz on Slap and a pair popped up on a local 2nd hand site.
How do they affect WB, pop, slide, all that jazz?
I posted in the regular setup thread about how much I love them the other day. They're really, really good in terms of turning. Be aware that they have the "in-between" axle lengths, so like my 5.5 have an 8.38" axle (which is a plus in my book, I love that length).
They're a wb shrinker, I'll have to look when I get home but Im fairly certain I measured them as being a little over 1/2" shorter than thunder titanium team 148. Pop is awesome, probably the best thing about them besides the turn. The pop feels like a forged BP venture to me, which is perfect. Stock bushings are excellent and the top one has a little nipple on it so they kind of interlock, you keep leaning into them expecting to hit the dead zone or bottom out and it doesn't happen. They turn fairly tight but have a little bit of surf to them, and they're super stable on center. Grinding I haven't really done because I'm trading mine to a SLAP pal as soon as I get the hollows (I ordered hollows and they sent me raws so I'm waiting on the hollows now) and I want them to be fairly pristine. I did do a quick crook on an unwaxed curb and it felt fine, but maybe ask Steve about that aspect.
They're also crazy versatile - I originally had them on my regular setup (8.25 PS Stix scumco, 14.25wb) and they were amazeballs so I decided to experiment a little and try longer wheelbase.
First I tried an 8.25 antihero hurricane with a 14.38" wb and that was great too.
Next I tried a 8.25 toy machine with a 14.5" wb - I had to loosen them up a little to get the same turn but no ghost pop and it didn't mess my timing up.
Finally the ultimate test - 8.25 heroin with a ludicrous 14.7" wb (ive never really been able to skate this deck with any degree of proficiency because of the wb so I just use it as a cruiser) - and the Films passed with flying colors. I did have a little ghost pop at first, but after about half a dozen ollies/180s I adjusted and it felt just fine. Obviously not as good as my normal setup, but totally skateable.
So overall I would give them extremely high marks. They're so good that I'm actually going to downsize my truck collection because I really can't think of a single situation that I would skate thunders over these. So if anyone wants a cheap set of lightly used 148/149 and doesn't care if they have a stupid graphic hit me up. $20 shipped. I think I have a set of 147s too.
