never tried thunders before, but im on the fence if i should get thunders or the new venture v8s...ive skated venture5.8 standards before and they werent too bad. normally skate i dy or ace but want to give something new a try. what would yall recommend? i skate transition at parks and curbs for the most part
Thunders are great, give them a try.
Thunder axles sip like crazy. When someone at a session does something sick, be sure to bang your board in applause on the slipped axle.
lol I havent seen an axle slip in like 20 years i want to say...?
have never heard this complaint about axle slip lol not sure if thats a troll. the main thing i have heard people complain about and i understand now is the baseplate is very short, combined with one of the most pushed out wheelbases available, it really causes the wheels to drag on square ledge nose/tailslide tricks. Ventures push the wheelbase out even more, but since the baseplate on ventures is gigantic, your wheels are less likely to brush the wall.
Thunders are lighter than Ventures and slightly lower, but just by 1mm if we are talking cast plate. if you get into Venture Lows you can go super low - lower than thunders, and also the thunder lights or hollow lights with the forged baseplates can get pretty low too.
Thunders are known for a very hard pinch where Ventures have a bit more gradual turn. This is because Thunder uses 2x Barrel Style Bushings where Ventures uses the traditional Cylinder shape for the bottom bushing and a barrel style for the top.
Not a troll, just my experience with 5 pairs of Thunders between 1994 and 2018. Mostly slip axles and broken kingpins.
Can confirm, get nasty axle slip on Thunders.
I actually spoke to a dlx rep about it (maybe through this site even), and they wanted me to “video the axle slippage”…
Which is kinda like.. how do you film something that happens skating organically with a truck? If I demonstrate the slippage by intentionally banging the axle on an hard object, I’m misusing the truck.
I thought that interaction was kinda weird and nonsensical.
Yeah it is often weird, but it is the easiest way to deal with anything - sort it out online, no sending product back to the distribution company or even further back to the supplier these days.
Had a similar thing with some current Indy axles slipping too, show play, spin wheel, smack on something, then show the wheel is not moving...
At least that is the easiest way to do it, even if it is a bit awkward, but set up the phone on a tripod or something and it might be easier.
Another way was draw a pen line on the axle against the hanger end, then hit the ground, then show the pen line has now moved. The spinning, then not spinning wheel is an easier one though.
Axle slip is definitely covered under warranty too, even if it is not as easy to see as a broken axle, or broken part.
