Fuck cancer. You will be sorely missed. Your talent. Your style. Your attitude. You were a shining star in skateboarding that absolutely fell much too soon. Rest in peace.
-
Haven't read anything official yet and I just hope this is not true. :'( Keep rolling Dylan...

Dear Mods,
if someone named "Bag of Farts" starts a thread on my death, which was announced on social media, can you please please delete it.
the internet is the worst sometimes.
if true, I feel terrible for those close to him, especially those who heard/were tortured by trying to discover whether he is dead via social media. ?

Fuck this. One of the best, still remember seeing him at an Osiris demo in the early 00's and being hyped on him since due to the similarity in age. Hope this isn't real, but unfortunately seems that way.

I had a friend find out one of our good friends die by an MSN messenger name. To announce things like that is in very bad taste.
RIP Dylan, you were one of the best to ever do it.
-
So terrible, he deserved to grow old and enjoy life.
So sorry for his family and friends loss.
RIP

From Jenkem's insta, such a sad day.

I'm at work right now and I'm trying my best not to cry in front of my students. He will truly be missed. I don't think there will ever be another Dylan.
-
RIP brother! You will be missed
-
I showed him and Janoski, Arto and a few others around Tokyo once when they came out for an Analog tour.
Seeing him skate live was something else man, at the time I didn't really even know who he was so it was a real eye opener.
He tried to front blunt this ledge that goes through a corner, was sliding it sick which in itself is a superhuman feat, and he took a really heavy slam. He just got up like nothing, and his hand was bleeding. He just laughed it off and that Oblow guy was laughing too, saying how lucky he was to get out of it. Anybody else probably would have gotten properly broken off.
Hearing this news just flew me right back to that time... sitting at the ledge spot watching him skate. Watching him and Janoski warming up skating flat was fucking unreal.
Skateboarding is a trip man, you never know where its going to take you or who you will meet.
We can only hope his family and friends are coping as well as they can right now.
-
put my cigs under the sink, fuck cancer. RIP Dylan
-
really great story @asakusa75
Can't believe this. He was so young, I honestly thought he would beat it, but cancer doesn't discriminate.
You will be missed, shred in peace.

I'll forever miss Dylan. Such power and style on a skateboard. Influenced the entire decade of skateboarding alone.
I'll be looking for that black Dylan board. First board of a collection.
Rest easy Dylan. Best wishes to his family and his friends. The entire skateboarding community misses you.
We love you Dylan. Always
-
My Instagram feed is absolutely filled with posts dedicated to Dylan, it's really incredible. Reading them has gotten me pretty misty-eyed. He is going to be so missed by so many.
-
This really bums me out. Dylan seemed like a dude who wouldn't want people to mourn his death but celebrate his life and get off our asses and skate as hard as we can. I'm beat tired from working six long days in the kitchen but I'm going out tonight and trying FS flips as high as I can in the wake of Dylan...
R.I.P Golden boy
-

This is my favourite clip of him. He popped the fuck out of that flip out and caught it a foot above the ledge. So many people tried to dress and skate like him, he was the only one that could pull it off. Iconic.
-
Damn this ducking awful news. Rip you fucking ripper!!
-
it's always so unreal to hear someone die before their time
going to miss his presence in skateboarding completely.
Rest easy Dylan. Best wishes to his family and his friends. The entire skateboarding community misses you.
We love you Dylan. Always
-
RIP this is fucking awful cancer is no joke
-
This is so surreal, I have no words. I'm just super bummed - he was one of my favorites on and off the board. Wishing nothing but the best for his friends and family.
Rest easy Dylan. Best wishes to his family and his friends. The entire skateboarding community misses you.
We love you Dylan. Always
-
so fucking sad right now, he created his own style, his own iconic image, like James Dean or a Johnny Depp
he reached out to so many through out the world, skateboarding, art, music, fashion, the world will be feeling this pain, he started his own trend, he was just the man. it is always the good ones too, Shane Cross had his own style, Lewis Marnell, Dylan, they all had there iconic image, they were here to inspire, Rest In Peace Team Handsome we are gonna miss you.

Worst news I've ever came home too.

I know a lot of people at the time (Dylan included) didn't like this part but this was always my favorite of his. The editing and that Elliot Smith track just put me in a very specific mood that got me hyped to skate. RIP to Mr. Rieder. I hope you everyone can take comfort in the fact that he did more things in his short lifetime than an average person could do in 90 years.

One trick that really stands out is the wall ride to run on the wall in a time to shine, a wall run? One of the craziest things I've seen in a skateboard
-
Truly upsetting and a great loss for skateboarding. He really was one of the modern greats. Thankfully his photos and video parts will live on forever continuing to inspire us and the future of skateboarding.

Legends never die. Dylan had a style that no one could emulate, which we fucking know because every other skater out there tried as hard as they could to do so. I hope his family can take some solace in the fact that dude ripped the shit out of life, in the end it's the most anyone can ask for.
-
Goddamnit. This one really hits deep. We lost a style ambassador today, and a freakishly talented skateboarder at that. I've heard nothing but good of him as a person. Take it easy up there Dylan, and make sure to flow the big bearded guy a fresh pair of your Gravis model.
-
I'm heartbroken.
28 years. He raised the bar.
I want to be a better person. Rest in peace, Dylan.
-
Total fucking legend of a skateboarder, for all eternity. Only the good die young.
He was literally one of the best ever, and had unparalleled super fuckin' raw power despite his deceptively slim (and undeniably gorgeous) figure. He will never be forgotten.
RIP <3

Same! he was like 13 just killing it as hard as all the pros. I met him and got him to sign my shirt and I got a picture with him. I still have it in a box of photos somewhere at my parents house. Even at a young age he was still a humble, nice kid. R.I.P.

I stepped out for a coffee and cig. Last thing I thought to myself was "the only thing I'm strong enough to do in my life is skate".
I come in and hear the news. I'm gonna try harder than fucking ever now. For Dylan.
RIP. We all miss you. What you have given will endure. Truly a gift of a human being and a skateboarder.
-
It never sounded good when he relapsed. This is absolutely terrible. I have a feeling it has been known for a bit that this was terminal, and he made an effort to see and talk to friends, judging from certain posts.
His legacy is going to be very interesting. I don't think skateboarding has had anyone of his fame and caliber die at a young age. His career effectively ended at 25/26 in regards to footage. I'm probably missing someone, and I say this with no disrespect intended towards guys like Van, Lewis, and Shane. Dylan was born 2 weeks after me, and it is crazy to think of what he accomplished in his short time on earth.
-
i usually don't really care when someone dies. But as i went trough instagram and read all the things duffel, ave, grosso and all the pros have written for Dylan I burst into tears.
I had to do some stuff today, but I just can. I've never met this person in my life, that's how much influence he had
Thank you Dylan for the way you skated. Thanks for all the inspiration you left for us.
Rest in Peace

A few years ago I went to see Andrew Bird at a little venue in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I step out for a smoke, light it up, get settled against this little rock ledge and look up and god damned Dylan Rieder is standing right in front of me. In Tulsa Oklahoma. On a Tuesday. I about had a heart attack. Of course I awkwardly introduced myself and told him I was a huge fan. He was in town on tour and decided to break away and see the show by himself. I always thought that was cool. We smoked a few cigarettes and talked for about ten minutes. He was instantly warm and friendly, and though he seemed a little reserved he didn't seem bothered to be recognized and heckled by a fan. I left the show that night with an ear to ear grin that probably lasted three days.
I saw the news today on the way to the corner store for a pack of smokes. I sobbed like an idiot for thirty minutes. It's strange how these people you grow up idolizing become a part of you. I didn't know him on any level, but I certainly feel a loss. I always anticipated some new footage, something new from him, any day. This was the last thing I expected, the last thing any of us wanted to hear.
Rest in peace man. Fuck this day.
-
That gifted, talented, on and off the board beautiful looking young man Dylan Rieder died
way too early. His impression to the skateboarding community was outstanding-
we will keep him in our hearts forever.
I have seen so many pictures and read so many heartmelting messages
from his friends, teammates and fellas.
Back in the days I was with Ed if I do an impossible- for the rest of my life
i am with Dylan Rieder if I do an impossible.
Condolences and sympathy to all friend and family!

R.I.P Dylan, the news has absolutely ruined my day. Ever since that Gravis part i have cuffed my jeans. So influential, so inspiring.

What a tragic loss. He was and always will be one of us. Rest easy Dylan.

It's hard to find the right words but he was such a big influence on skateboarding in past few years like no one was. Tricks, style, fashion and the way the outside world look at us got changed by him. A big inspiration is gone. I'm bummed. Shred in peace!

i was showing the news to my father this morning and trying to impose how much of a figure Dylan was in skating i used pretty much the same sentence.
fuck cancer, RIP

I haven't been this bummed in a long time, I walked around campus with a lump in my throat for three hours before I could finally let the tears flow. I can't get on Instagram without seeing all the posts and videos from people and getting emotional. This is such an unreal loss for skateboarding fans everywhere. Dylan further showed us the importance of style and personality, he was that guy whether you cared for his skating or not and there will never be another like him. I can only imagine what his friends and family are feeling right now. Cancer is the worst.
I have nothing but the endless love and respect for you, Dylan. Godspeed and Ride In Paradise.

Really sad news to hear this morning. We lost a great one. RIP youngblood...
-
Barely learned of this via ride channel, sad to hear. Surreal and incredulous. I was feeling shitty all day yesterday thinking about regrets and missed opportunities in my own life... now this happens. I never really took the time to become a huge fan and appreciate him, but his influence was so palpable everywhere I'd look, that I almost didn't really need to. It's tough to hear this, knowing that what he brought to the table was so revered by so many people. It doesn't feel like he was meant to die so soon. Truly an icon. I remember in one of the last few street leagues he was a part of, maybe 2012-13ish, he went on a roll for a few runs, landing everything. People were so psyched.
My mom (and most of the Latin music world) was mourning the death of an old famous Mexican singer last month & I didn't really understand it that much, but now I do.

if someone named "Bag of Farts" starts a thread on my death, which was announced on social media, can you please please delete it.
the internet is the worst sometimes.
I hope that when you die that you have made an impact enough on anyone outside of your immediate family, so much so that they want to share your passing with the world. A way of saying thanks, and announcing how much of a footprint you actually left while enjoying your short stay on this spinning rock.
Good luck with that, complete stranger.

RIP. Dylan's presence in skateboarding is tied to a lot of indelible memories of mine. I remember exactly when and where I watched his Gravis part for the first time, and I knew it was gonna fuck the game up the moment it ended. Skateboarding is better for having had Dylan Rieder, and we'll miss him.
I also think Dollin is a piece of shit for his comments towards Nyjah... using another human's passing as an excuse to attack someone else is pretty low.
EDIT: Wanted to throw some pictures up.

fuck off with your trolling in this thread.
Condolences to his family, friends and those close to him.
I was lucky to watch him skate live once. At the Huf demo in Cologne in 2013. Dude ripped so hard with grace whilst remaining approachable, humble and genuinely nice. Truely, a great loss not only to skateboarding.
RIP.

was always a fan, never got the hate on his style. even liked the video with the naked girls. my son is 5 and his name is dylan. i didn't name my son after my "favorite skater" or anything like that dylan definitely got that name on my wife and my radar by being such a stylish character.
was this just a genetic thing or did the smoking get him? no disrespect intended it just seems so fucked and random if genetic.
RIP to one of the best. it's weird how the really unique stylish guys from that era have all seemed to pass young.
-
I very much wanted to dismiss all of this as some shitty rumor, but I'm heartbroken to hear this news. Was always a fan, but after dealing with the issues addressed in his Epicly Later'd he seemed untouchable. But unfortunately cancer doesn't discriminate. </3

this dudes trick selection/style will always be golden . his fits were emulated by young+grown folk worldwide . RIP

I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty sure you don't get leukemia from smoking at such a young age. I had a friend who was diagnosed shortly after turning 30 and he never smoked, it's just shit luck that life throws at you sometimes. He has survived, but it's an ongoing process in his life.
This really is a sad day. I always thought he was just in his prime and even as he got older he'd start skating tranny more again and it would be a treat to watch.
There really is no other skater like him. I want to watch his epicly later'd again but I know I'd start crying again.

Leukemia is cancer of the blood or bone marrow (which produces blood cells). A person who has leukemia suffers from an abnormal production of blood cells, generally leukocytes (white blood cells).
The bad cells crowd out the good cells in the blood.
So yea, rare and random.

If you have a genetic susceptibility to leukemia, smoking cigarettes will increase the chances of developing it
Not trying to take anything away from the horrible loss of Dylan or saying that was a factor for him but it certainly didn't help.
90% of the tributes I've seen of him since his passing have a cigarette in his hand or his mouth. Every interview he's chain smoking. All we can do is wonder if he hadn't smoked if the disease would have shown so early or at all

I don't think BMCSteve was saying that, only that for acute myeloid leukemia (not sure that was the type of Leukemia Dylan had) the only proven lifestyle-related risk factor for it is smoking.

I smoked probably as hard and as long as Dylan did (I just quit, not important really) and don't have cancer. One of my best friends, who also skated, died at age 18 from Leukemia. He never smoked, he never did any drugs at all. He also was expected to pull through, then had a hard relapse that ended his life. So let's not do the "he had it coming" thing. Leukemia is a fucking horrific disease that can get anybody, and has a terrible way of killing children and young people.
I'm not going to lie and claim Dylan was ever my favorite skater, but its impossible to deny the impact he had on skateboarding as a culture. His spirit moves on, but his impact and legacy will continue on.

"You just figure it out, that is the cool thing about being a skateboarder, or being a musician, or being an artist, you figure it out your own way, and you do it your way. It is never good enough, but, that is the good part about it though, you continue on the next project. Keep, keep it going." - Dylan Rieder (1988-2016)

I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned, but I highly encourage everyone to sign up to be in the bone marrow donor registry. Chances are they'll never match you with anyone, but if they do, you could easily save someone's life. All you need to do is send in a cheek swab and they'll keep you in a database in case there is someone in need who can accept your donation. If you do match, they can get a marrow donation the same way they would take a plasma donation (none of the drilling into your hip business anymore).

What a heavy day...
It's hard growing old & watching/admiring somebody throughout the years, almost growing up with them in a way & suddenly they are gone...
Skateboarding is such a beautiful thing & we all need to take stock of what we got, because it can be all over tomorrow...

I know somebody that skated with him during that last Huf US tour they did..maybe summer 14? And apparently he had already been diagnosed at that time but was still skating....if you think about the last few things he put out from the perspective of him knowing he was sick and possibly terminal...changes alot of things. The jenkem playlist being one example.

I was thinking about this. Dylan had a lot of time to be ready to go, to made peace with himself and with everybody out there. He was posting things randomly and then erasing it within minutes on Insta like that photo of the beach with a beatiful sunset. He caption something about "...the other side." and then he delete it.
Then the rides he was going on, that photo where AA is driving is super powerful to me and all those friends with him at home all the time. I dont know, the last couple of years the guy was just giving some vibes of...peace, again. Thats the word to me, peace. Fucking peace to use one of his favorite words.
It reinvigorate me a little this cause I feel he died with a smile, you know just faded away with style and grace. No regrets, no drama, no bullshit. :)

I imagine that's how it went. He accomplished so much more than any of us could ever dream about. His dreams became reality. He knew he would have to leave this world soon, and he did what he could with his last moments here. Skated with style. Left with style.

soup: thanks for this pic. always loooooved that bs smith.
bag o farts: my only point was that it would be very hard to find out someone you knew/close to passed via social media... even worse when the initial wave of posts/comments/whatever are unsure of whether your friend/family member is alive or dead. it's just scary how fast information is passed. I didn't intend to single you out, other than the fact you have a hilarious, but not hilarious at a time of grief, screen-name. re: the rest of your post, simply put, none of us will know whether or not anyone will acknowledge our death...
one of the hardest things to wrap your mind around with Dylan's death is the fact he simply 'ooozed' charisma and style. I think more people idolized him than care to admit. seemed like he was untouchable. unfortunately, cancer could give two shits about that. ? sorry for the loss of so many skateboarders' friend.

The man is strong over the years while being diagnosed. To continue on with life like it was never in him, physically & mentally. That's a fucking champion. I know he kept it private about him being treated just to hold our emotions back. Fuck health complications. Hes living eternally healthy now with Lewis up there
-
So many news publications/media outlets outside the realm of skateboarding are cranking out articles about him . Hopped onto yahoo to check my email on my lunch break and noticed they put up a huge header/banner for him . crazy to see the ripples he made in society , especially for people outside of the skate bubble . Just now realizing how strong his energy was . another star seed returns to the light .

Such a huge hole left in skateboarding
Remember to be yourself no matter what and skate with power and grace

Got a text from my mom today, asking me if I'd heard about him. Apparently this is making the rounds in major news networks..
Beyond heartbreaking and sad... life is just too goddamn fragile. RIP to one of the most stylish motherfuckers on and off the board, he truly left a mark on the skateboarding world and the world in general.
His last instagram post, sitting on the beach with his dog, is a tearjerker. RIP

Grabbed a pair of the Huf Dylans ( still regret selling my few gravis pair ) and set up an appt for a tribute tat. Like many of you, this is one of the very few people I haven't known but their passing touched me deeply. Truly saddened by his passing, but am happy he got to spend time with loved ones before he passed and is out of pain now. Rest In Peace Dylan

My heart fuckin sank when I heard this. Amazing skater and pretty much the sole reason why everyone cuffs their pants and does their impossibles like 3 shuvs. This fucking blows to hear, he was too good to go this soon.

^ That's so heavy :'(. At least he enjoyed himself his last few weeks. How many people can say they chilled at Ozzy's beach house in their life time??
-
holy fuck I'm going to cry. That was the saddest thing I've read. Too much man...too much.
-
I'm gutted, but I can't stop re-watching everything he's been a part of.
I hope Huf keeps making Dylan's shoe and donates the proceeds from the sales to cancer research or the bone marrow donor program
-
?I walked over and gave him a kiss on the forehead and pulled his eyelids down and said ?See you at the next one buddy.? ?
:'( What the fuck, that killed me. I think my next board is gonna be the FA Dylan, throw some rails on to save the graphic then skate the hell out of it.
-
It's crazy because this all started as a supposed rumor then word got out it was true. People were saying, "get well soon" but it faded out and he even had some clips come out. I figured with all that having gone silent he was on a steady road to recovery. Hearing the news was such a shock. A friend sent me an FB message that said, "Wow, Dylan. What a bummer" and instantly I knew what that meant. Come to find out that friend's wife treated him at City of Hope.
When I first heard, it didn't sadden me as much as having all social media accounts + my phone flooded texts reminding it happened. Not only had he influenced me personally but he left behind a legacy that will inspire forever. Being a skateboarder, and to my friends who skate, it's like if David Bowie died unexpectedly at his peak. He meant so much to so many.
RIP Dylan

I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned, but I highly encourage everyone to sign up to be in the bone marrow donor registry. Chances are they'll never match you with anyone, but if they do, you could easily save someone's life. All you need to do is send in a cheek swab and they'll keep you in a database in case there is someone in need who can accept your donation. If you do match, they can get a marrow donation the same way they would take a plasma donation (none of the drilling into your hip business anymore).

Pretty crazy. Every morning I check BBC news for US/Canada & world news. This was in the headlines of the fucking BBC news:
I've been following this thread since the news broke yesterday but reading that People article has me tripping out a bit. I live in Newport Beach across the street from an Airbnb house. Not long ago I was walking by my place and I saw who I thought looked like Dylan at the Airbnb house. The dude looked just like him. He broke out a laptop with a big sticker on the back of it and was chilling on the porch. He glanced up and gave me a cool head nod & whtsup, which I returned. The guy had that same Dylan grin, he just looked so familiar. I passed him off as a look-alike though, remembering the 'get well' thread here, and assumed he was in the hospital. Reading the People article, it says he visited Newport Beach in recent times and his laptop had a big sticker on the back. Did I really cross paths with a super chill Dylan. and not realize it, not long before his passing? I'll never know, but may always wonder. I've got maybe 4 pairs of various Gravis Dylan shoes and 2 pairs of his jeans, I'm sure I'll think about it every time I wear one.
RIP Dylan. Condolences to family and friends.
I'll be mailing a check in to the hospital in his honor, per his family's request.
-
I am still in shock. I was busy at work today and was focused on what i was doing but every now and then I would get this sudden thought that Dylan Rieder is no longer on this earth.....its very unsettling. Such a strange but beautiful thing that we as skateboarders form a bond with people we typically don't even know personally.
Death is always one of those things that opens up your eyes and checks you back into reality. I have lately been dealing with some personal issues and life stressors but in the big picture if you take a step back they really aren't shit. Appreciate your time here.
Sorry for the emotional rant
-
From AO:
Dylan... you were someone I always admired and looked up too.
The way you held yourself. The way you could walk into a room, and everything felt still, Just for that very moment.
Your power,Your energy,your style,your charm and smile.
You taught me so much without every saying a word.
Your actions taught us, how to be ourself, how not to care of other opinions.
To be strong and focused
To follow our dreams and passions.
To have independents and be an individual.
Someone that isn't afraid to blazed his own trail.
You always inspired with effortlessness.
You left one the most memorable legacy. For the future generations to come,
they'll always remember you, and your gift you crafted.
I had some of the best times with you and learned so much along the way. Thank you for everything
You were my favorite, for just being you.
I love you and I'll miss you deeply! 💙

Dylan is the epitome of cool. He transcended skateboarding and the culture within it. A selfless, caring, and loving human being that had limitless talents in several aspects of his life. Dylan oozed style on and off the board. This generation's superhero left an impact on our community that we all are proud to have been a part of. He lived his life the right way. Although his time was short, he lived a thousand lifetimes. Here's to one of the greats and thanks to him we all know that the impossible is possible. RIP sweet prince, your spirit will live on as long as there is skateboarding.
-

I wanted to write something very similar and couldn't figure it out, you wrote it perfectly. It's difficult to fathom he's gone, his impact was so legendary. His spirit is still with us in a big way and will always be...He was literally your favorite skater's favorite skater for years...and probably continue to be forever. I feel sorry for his friends and family, I hope them the best.

Fuuuuck this dude just oozed style. That is the dopest Macbook decal/sticker I have ever seen. I am going to buy for sure. Not to copy him but to honor his memory.
Also, I got a text from my mom saying, "I know you go on "that forum" so you probably know this already, but I just read on Fox News or CNN (I can't remember which) that pro skateborder Dylan Rieder passed away." Then she texted me if he was the one that always skated in wedding shoes. Fuck I love my Mom lol.
-
I have his first FA deck hanging up in the wall of my kitchen. Stared at it today and almost choked up. I think Dylan should always have a pro model out because his influence will be just as strong for a long time to come. Maybe have proceeds benefit the cancer hospital or a leukemia research fund.
-
when people die i always tend to think that in that moment somewhere they re reborn and it s all good... rip mr reider nothing but respect
-
RIP
When Dylan and Austyn just got on HUF, the tour videos got me stoked, because I knew there always be something good from Dylan, going super fast, popping neck high flip tricks, sliding and grinding difficult ledges.
-
I'm gutted, but I can't stop re-watching everything he's been a part of.

This exactly. I just had dinner, was chilling out, having a wine and then just as you say the thought hits you that he has passed and its just...... I don't know I guess I'm just finding the thought to be very surreal. The rumours had been around for a while and I just assumed then, that if the rumours were true he would be fine because he was still young and had so much. I can't get passed it.
He was amazing, skate on.
-
Not going to lie, I'm a 34 year old dude and I cried when I heard it and I'm tearing up while I write this. And I never even met him.
Just the day before I got the news that a befriended couple's 2-year old girl has leukemia as well.
2 years old, which is... I can't even try to explain how sad that is.
Cancer is just something that comes way to close way too much. My mom had it when she was pregnant, I had it as a kid, mom got it again, my two grandfathers died of it, my grand ma has it right now... and since I'm producing cysts on the daily I'm 100% sure I'll get it again as well...
I was one Facebook trying to scroll through some messages. I was selling boards when a friend of mine told me the news. I was already in bed and texted a pro I know (not to brag at all since I barely know 2 personally...) and he confirmed it immediately. I just stared at the ceiling for 10 minutes while my girlfriend asked what was wrong... and I just couldn't take it anymore. I just broke. Such an amazing and talented guy taken out of this world. It was just too much to bare at the moment. And I even wore all black to work as well.
The guy was just himself and it was funny that so many people were trying to emulate and copy him. He was this generation's MUSKA or Hosoi. The guy that everyone wants to be, oozes coolness and style, but no one comes (or came) even close. He literally had it all, the looks, the style, the hair, the talent, the attitude and even after skating I'm pretty sure he would have made it big in the fashion or music industry.
You were one of the best to ever do it. And most certainly the most stylish...
R.I.P.
-
Dylan's passing and all the reactions got me thinking about a thing or two.
So many people who knew him (personally or not) wanted to be like him, even the ones giving him shit.
Many people wanted to have his skating abilities, style and grace, fame and money, taste, looks, hairstyle, way of dressing, the people surrounding him or his life in general, where he seemingly got to experience rad stuff all the time. I'm probably one of these people to a certain extent.
Who wanted to have the life Dylan had had in the last two years, though?
We often forget that e v e r y person, especially public figures, have rough patches to deal with as well. Instead they get idolized and admired, they seem untouchable. Dylan seemed fucking untouchable, also to me.
He wasn't. No one is.
We may never be like Dylan or have his abilities on or off the board, but can make the best of his passing. It can be the classic hypocritical mourning on social media and going back to normal like nothing has happened. It can also be seen as food for thought.
Life's too fucking short to try to copy someone or live someone else's dream. Dylan seemed to have that sorted out.
That being said, i have never met him, but think he's one of a kind and a fucking incomparable superstar. I've been following his path for a while now. The only pro's board on my wall is his.
R.I.P. you legend
BTW. Is the "ie" vs. "ei" really that difficult for many guys? I think I've seen his name spelled wrong just as often as correctly.

Stayed up until 3am on Wednesday just refreshing Instagram and reading everyone's tributes. Tried skating to shop from my house for a beer and my legs just felt loose. Spent the whole next day in a complete fucking daze. Even one of my lecturers at university had heard about so I tried explaining who he was. Deepest thoughts go out to his family and friends like Oblow, Arto, AVE, Greg Hunt and so on. Cant imagine how awful it must have been to witness their little buddy grow into this amazing, idolised person and then be taken away like this. Put this up on my site yesterday, I thought it was pretty silly to feel this way about someone who I had never met dying but after reading everyone's comments here that thought doesn't feel so unreasonable anymore and wanted to share it here too:
To mourn the passing of an individual you have never met is a confusing feeling. We grow up idolising professional skateboarders. We aspire to do the tricks they do, dress the way they dress, support the brands that support them, acquire their taste in music and so much more.
They influence not just skateboarding but every aspect of our lives. Even into adulthood, they are superheroes who dust themselves off after the hardest falls and keep fighting. They bleed yet at the same time theyre invincible; they are one of us but what we aspire to be. It feels like they will always be there, always making you want to run out the door and ride your skateboard.
We saw Dylan as a kid in Subject to Change, witnessed his style mature in A Time To Shine, battle his demons throughout adolescence during the era of Mind Field to then emerge in his eponymous video dylan. as the stylish skateboarder we adore. When Dylan seemed to almost disappear from skateboarding, shortly after his outstanding part in cherry, frightening whispers began to circulate which have regrettably proved more than rumour. It is harrowing that such a unique individual has been taken at such a young age.
Cuffed black jeans, slip-ons, ripped t-shirt, leather jacket, slicked-back hair, rings, necklace, tattoos Dylan had a style so instantly recognisable, so widely imitated but still inimitable, so effortlessly cool; like skateboardings answer to James Dean and it is a tragedy their comparison extends to this sad conclusion.
Power and finesse comparable to none and inspired a generation with pure nonchalance whenever he stepped on a skateboard, popped an impossible, and with every single push. Dylan Rieders legacy is an enduring reminder that less is more.
"I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow."
- Waltz #2, Elliott Smith
Rest in peace, you handsome devil.
-
So sad. Him, his family and friends have been constantly on my mind since they told the news. RIP.
-
That people magazine article is so heavy. Being the same age as him i was really stunned on the news, more so on how young he was and how like the article says was fighting for 2 years in private. Something so tragic like this should encourage people to not take a single day on this earth for granted. RIP Dylan :'(
-
As I believe Soda Jerk once said, like skateboarding's Helen of Troy he was the "man who cuffed a thousand pants" Mad love, respect and sympathy for all those effected by this. Absolute legend.
-
I can't believe I'm just finding out about this now. I'm taking a few days off work. I lost my sister in law just a month ago to leukemia this year. It hits hard. R.I.P Dylan and fuck cancer.

Dylan Rieder was one of those people who truly walked in the light. And he'll forever remain in the hearts of those who know how fucking beautiful it feels to have a skateboard under your feet and the happiness that it brings.
Cancer has hurt so many people I love these past few years - SLAP, hug your friends and tell them you love them.
-
Honestly this fucking sucks.
Such an amazing guy. The most influential skater of the modern bunch.
Probably the best style of them all. On and off the board.
RIP
The greatest
-
Once I saw Dylan. in real life, and noticed he was shorter than I expected, about my size. I remember being instantly encouraged by the observation. I love how skaters, jaded as we may get, remain capable of the most genuine kind of admiration. We had all seen and tried hundreds of frontside tailslide flip outs to fakie already, but who knew it could be done quite like that? A week after that part came out, you could visit any rickety skatepark in, say, rural Poland, and find a kid with a fresh haircut, dressed in a torn shirt and black cuffed jeans. Older heads may be less impressionable, some even hated on the fashion, but there was no way around his impeccable style and ability on the board. More than a football fan can a QB, or an art critic the artist, or a Doors fan JM, I think skaters can fathom Dylan.'s work. The best of which was still to come. We lost a homerun of a skateboarder on the cusp of his prime. Imagine the kind of footage our beloved canon will lack with his passing. That's what I've been doing all day and yesterday. RIP Dylan..
-
Rip Dylan, one of the best to ever do it, and to do it as you pleased, thanks for the great skating and may you roll forever
-
Rest Peacefully Dylan
I'm in vegas and I found out yesterday in a text from my friend. Broke down crying in the middle of the strip.
One of the best to do it. I used to make my friends watch skate videos with me after a night of drinking and they all always seemed to get interested when it was Dylan footage. It's not just us who see this mans value. He was and is a true inspiration.

I'm wondering if there will be any last interview or anything. Maybe a heaps chat or something. I've still got fresh gravis slip ons and an AWS Dylan deck hanging up, and found my copy of the Dylan. DVD. Holding onto that shit for sure.

Absolutely! Most donations are done via PBSC, and they ensure your body replenishes the marrow. I'm not sure of Dylan's condition, but I had a personal friend who died because they couldn't find a match with an appropriate donor. Again, if anyone wants to send a big FUCK YOU to leukemia, you should join the registry.

It's amazing how many people cried for Dylan. We're all grown ass men/women always talking about masculinity and sometimes even hating on each other, yet we all have emotions and we cried for Dylan. That's the amazing thing about being a skateboarder. Doesn't matter where you are, what religion you believe in, language barriers, preferences, gay or straight, we all share one thing in common: our love for skateboarding. That's why skateboarding is the best. We may hate and argue with each other, but skateboarding will always bring us together.
SLAP, I love all of you.

Rest In Peace Dylan. I said it in the bumped thread, wishing it'd never pop up again but did. Shred in heaven handsome.

I've tried giving bone marrow twice and been refused due to previous back injuries. I'd encourage any of you to do so if you can, it made me so proud of my dad.

I want to pay tribute to Dylan with some ink so Im going to ask a favor...can some please provide a good image of the cat Dylan had on the hand that I think Oblow draw. I was looking around on the internet and cant find any good and I remember that some photos exists out there. This one:

felt the same way man. When I heard the news I just didn't feel right for the rest of the day. Others have passed away but this one hit me hard.

Although Dylan's passing is really horrible and extremely sad. Look at how amazing the skateboarding community is. Over the last 30 days skateboarders have rallied around the joy of BA being able to be reborn as his true honest self in public and also around the sorrow of the untimely death of Dylan. There is no other community that can touch the openness and acceptance of skateboarders. We could get in to the intricacies of how historically skateboarding has been misogynistic, homophobic, or judgmental, but all in all I choose to see how inclusive it is today. No matter your income, talent, whereabouts, race, or beliefs, you know you can count on a piece of wood with wheels screwed on it to tie us all together. It makes me extremely proud to be a skateboarder and feel a part of a giant diverse and dysfunctional family.

Skated hard for Dylan last night and everything was clicking! RIP to that sexy beast

Been searching for a bunch of his stuff online the past 4 days and hoping to get whatever slip-on color way or maybe some from his first model with HUF but it's been diminishing(Even the newest color way on the HUF site is gone). I'm not sure if people are just trying to make a kill with re-selling his stuff which is just absurdly messed up. I'm glad i seen a post by Flatspot stating that they were gonna donate all sales that was made from Dylan's stuff that they had leftover to a Cancer Research Foundation, I'm just stoked to know people like that still exist. I'd be down if HUF did the same thing and possibly still continue some more color ways that are leftover for next year's seasons.
-
I've wanted a stick and poke for awhile and one of my friends was down to do one, so she gave me this last night. One of my oldest pieces of clothing I still wear is Dylan's Analog pocket tee with a little straight razor above the pocket. That shirt means a lot to me so I think the razor was a good was a good way to honor him and all the memories I have from the shirt.
It's kinda hard to tell, but the tattoo is on my upper ankle.

As for the first shoes, I have multiples of the first color, along with the two from the holiday of 2014. After that, I pretty much stuck to the sutter.
As for the slip ons, depending what size you are, they restocked. I feel the same way. I have been skating the slip on since it came out, as I really enjoy that shoe. I also skate the sutter, which I'm thinking they discontinued as well. Fortunately, I have quite the back stock on both shoes, so I am looking forward to actually skating them, rather than be one of these capitalistic mates who bought something to resell. I'm never to stoked on that whole thing, and in the case of this, it's a bummer. Especially seeing a pair of Gravis go for over a grand....to hell with that.

This whole thing hit skateboarding so hard. Nobody was like that guy. Wish I could have met him. his sister posted this to insta recently which is really kind of her. Maybe send some positive vibes her way after seeing this, we all need it, but especially her.

I got a little kick out of that interview Dylan did with Austyn recently ; I guess Dylan burnt Austyn a bunch of Bright Eyes for some road trip the latter went on.

I'm still getting teary-eyed about this shit. I think my first tat ever will be of my Dylan necklace I got with an analog jacket a few years ago. It's a straight razor with "DR" on the hilt. Subtle and classic. Just like him.
-
I've wanted a stick and poke for awhile and one of my friends was down to do one, so she gave me this last night.

It's unreal how heavy this still is. It feels weird to be so effected by the passing of someone who I never knew at all, especially days later. I think that says something about how important our favorite skaters are to us.

Wow.
It's weird how the quote "The good die young" seems fitting for Dylan. I didn't realize or appreciate how rare he was, but he was too good for this world anyway.

Thanks dude!
Some clubs at my school today were tabling for bone marrow donation, so I said "fuck it" and signed up. The application was really simple and the cheek swabs took about a minute. And I think it was mentioned already in this thread, but everyone should sign up if they can. The actual process of donating is just like taking blood because they just need your stem cells now. Only rarely do they ever have to tap into someone's hip bone like before.

Yep. And to me, it's also something as simple as, "Fuck these videos and pictures were captured when he was living, but now he's not anymore." that brings out the sadness whenever I pull up instagram. It's hard enough without reading what's written by each of his friends that posted those things.

Yea im in the same boat. I caught the Dylan Epicly Later'd during a low point in my life 3-4 yrs ago, being older and out of touch with who he was it left a memorable impression. a Few months later randomly watching a Tyler Creator interview they asked who his favorite skater was, and he goes "Dylan Fucking Reider DOG"! Followed by his SLS appearance, he shot up to one of my favorites fast. Last week when I heard the news I was immediately crushed and bought the shoes out of guilt for not appreciating/ supporting while he was alive.

days later and every now and then I get the thought in my head that dylan rieder is longer here.....seems kinda surreal.
Friend and I were talking about it the other day. He was telling me that when he heard the news he started tearing up/crying in front of his girlfriend and she was all confused why he just all the sudden got emotional lol. I kept feeling weird that I cried and I didn't even personally know him. Didn't feel weird at all once I came on slap and noticed a lot of others had a similar response.

I'd be surprised if not one well in the head skateboarder shed a tear for Dylan.
I told my girlfriend about Dylan, and even told my ex that he passed (I used to always ask her if she thought he was handsome and made her watch Dylan videos with me).

Damn, Conor Oberst playing at your funeral. Super curious what the setlist was, actually.
It goes without saying that his death was extremeley premature and tragic, but at least he did get to lead a truly incredible life.
-
What keeps hitting me is that he was a young man who just fell ill and died and there was nothing to be done about it. There was no misadventure, nothing where he zigged when he should have zagged, none of that that usually befalls young men like that. I've had friends die in drunken car crashes, one fell off a building, one shot himself, stuff like that. This was a 28 year old in the prime of his life, an amazing life, and his own body turned on him and despite all best efforts he died. It's so, so sad.

I am actually in the middle of working on a zine that a mate and I have been attempting to do over the past couple months. We still have work to do, but any/all money that the zine makes, IS going straight to the Dylan memorial.
Content of the zine includes:
Interview with John Sharkey of Dark Blue/PRF/Clockcleaner
Interview with Richie Charles of Testostertunes/Watery Love
Interview with Grant Yansura at WKND
Interview with Tom Karangelov
Interview with Jon Goemann
Again, it is still in the works, but we are getting there.

That shit pops up in my explore all the time! It's really strange and I don't like it. I saw another one with something like "kingofskateboarding" or something like that, that was a similar type of tribute page thing.
shit_for_brains put it best, Dylan would want you to be yourself. And definitely not starting a instagram accounts for his shoes.

When I saw that i thought it's an account reposting old Gravis designs and I was hyped but then I just got pissed at this dude shamelessly asking for product tagging people like "need another pair" and reposting generic Gravis boat shoes with #swankfuckinc #ripdylan hashtags.

Dylan, selfishly one of the things I miss the most is what a great listener you were. Today would have been your 29th birthday but your wisdom exceeded way beyond your years. I'd give anything to hear you say in your sarcastic tone that shit isn't that bad. That smile. A smile that makes me feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have been on the receiving end of. I miss you every day. I miss you most today. I love you forever.

The last few words dylan said to me were something along the lines of fuck you because I wouldn't let him take out his breathing tube and walk around. This was more or less our form of communication on a daily basis anyways so I wouldn't have it any other way. Luckily the last few words I was able to say to him were I love you. We spent many birthdays together and sadly I can't buy you a margarita or tear up the town together on this one. To my best friend and brother, happy 29th. Love you and think about you every goddamn day

When you're a smoker, smoking is one of your favorite things to do. How many waking hours in the day? 16 or 17? Most smokers power through at least 20 cigarettes in that time period.

Quick background: This was the last half of the infamous 'The Life of True Blue' clip that the Team Handsome channel posted on Friday, which was quickly taken down by another copyright claim by Strobeck.
I assume this was the source of the above link which was uploaded by the user "Newport" on YouTube. I left a cautionary comment about Strobeck getting any semblance of this clip taken down...this is what ensued in my comment thread between "Newport" and Strobeck himself before that video was also taken down, enjoy (read from bottom to top):

But really...I still think about DR often, especially when i'm on that stretch of Sunset in West Hollywood. I wish we could have seen him evolve through the years.
-
Me too, and I'm nowhere near Hollywood.
-
I'm just glad when I die you retards wont know about it.
-
That fucking got me.
That was intense. Very happy I have one of the Concannon True Blue shirts.
-
Really still can't believe he's gone. He was most definitely the type of skater who would've aged gracefully a la Reynolds, Heath, Guy, etc. It's such a shame we'll never get to see another part from him. I hope Bill or Greg or whoever can put out an edit of his unreleased footage at some point.
-
The video bill keeps getting taken down was dylans funeral video, it was only for his funeral, its like when musicians die and they have all these unrealsed songs and best ofs when they die and people just milk them, instead of just being happy and seeing what the musicisns only wanted you to hear, thats like how they are with Dylan, of course he was going to get blown up bigger because of death, it sucks i dont think they or dylan would enjoy it

That video is actually from the same channel/guy that was going back and forth with Strobeck. The Conor Oberst "True Blue" video does contain most of the second section of "The Life of True Blue" clip, for what it's worth.
The original "The Life of True Blue" clip opens with a few minutes of family photos. The second part to the tune of "Plainsong" by The Cure covers his grom stage and carries through the AWS/Gravis period, culminating in the Cherry era. The final part (which was posted by Team Handsome and Newport and taken down by Strobeck) is in black and white and covers varying times of his travels including his Huf/FA period with Fred Neil's "A Little Bit of Rain" as the soundtrack. The ending consists of the "True Blue" lyrics and fades to black from this photo of Dylan and Hank:

I did happen to watch that video and it is indeed more personal. The one posted on his strobecks facebook is just as good. The other was more for his family which included a bunch of family photos unrelated to skating so i can see why that edit wasnt meant to be public.

I never met the guy and I'm considerably older than him but the way he handled life and in particular the last part of his life is definitely something to be admired. When I found out on here about his passing I was in disbelief despite having heard about his struggle. Still to this day I think about it and how terrible it is that someone so young can get cut down in the prime of their life and that's what stick for me. Be a better person, make your mark even if it's by subtle strokes. The world might not mourn for you the same way they did Dylan. but if you were true to yourself you'll be surprised who you may have touched along the way.

Dr Dre taught me to rock my khakis with a cuff and a crease.

I still remember the moment I found out about his passing. I was at my gf’s scrolling through IG when suddenly the feed was full of nondescript Dylan posts, and having been vaguely aware of his condition my heart sank to my stomach. I felt kinda weird trying to explain why a pro skater I had never met passing was such a big deal, but man, skateboarding really lost someone special that day.
-
Being a skater, and having survived stage 3 colorectal none but six months prior I heard from a friend about Dylan's leukemia and felt a strange connection. Then he passed less than a month after and I lost it. It humbled me and what I went through, because even though I felt I went through hell, I couldn't imagine what he had encountered and dealt with.

Dylan would have aged into a so much cooler version of hawk or Mullen, that’s how impressive and influential he was. People who don’t skate actually mention him quite a bit in the circles I’ve walked around. He had that kind of influence. It was incredible to watch the entire scene start cuffing their pants and wearing handsome shit. He truely was an original, and had a style that I don’t think has been or will ever be matched by the time that gravis part came out. He would have been the most famous skateboarder in the world if we would have got to see him age.

true true but i can't help but think a lot of that was based on his good looks. imagine for a second that you popped his head off and replaced it with mikey taylors. kept the style, the persona, the voice, the taste, everything, but with mikey taylors head. His influence would be nothing near as it was/is. but thats the vain world we live in.

Bra his arms were amazing, I mean you might not like them but the freestylers were the first to have those arms along with the dogtown/surf skate of the original generation. They both extentuatued their arms and it looked awesome. I hate how like people hate on the “fake” arms, no motherfcuker hated on the dogtown dudes or the freestylers. Those dudes actually knew what their arms looked like existentially and changes them to have better style. I can also tell you that’s far far far harder then it sounds because I know the old heads used to do it. I’ve talked to enough old ballers, and doing that is so much harder and respectable then people throw it. To know exactly how to use your arms to Steezus out a trick, and make them do what u want, but not make it look forced. It’s so much harder then you actually think, go try it consciously thinking about where your arms are when u skate, that level of body control is unfuckwithable.

It’s so much harder then you actually think, go try it consciously thinking about where your arms are when u skate, that level of body control is unfuckwithable.
A fluid and natural like style without looking contrived or too goofy is the toughest. Seems pros that rarely produce footage are reluctant to release any clips due to such a high caliber, importance, and esteem when it comes to proper form and style (or could be really critical and/or unmotivated...). IMO Joey Pepper, Julien, Gino, GT, Pappalardo, Carroll, Jake Johnson, Tom Penny, Danny Garcia, Heath, Van Wastell.. list could go on. Or skaters like that might just skate-have skated out of love for skating who knows...
Proper technique, form, trick/spot selection, clothes seem to be just a small fraction and testament to what makes a great timeless style.
Dylan seemed to have it all so casually without sweating it. Rest In Peace.

I believe it’s Scott Oster but I could be wrong.

Does anyone have pictures of them all? I know there were 2 on the highway and one in a drainage ditch visible from the highway. Can only find the ditch one though which I think he did when Dylan initially passed. The most recent one was insane.

I saw Conor play in Detroit in 2011 and he played with Todd. Mid way through the set he introduced everyone and said something about him skating.
I dunno what it says about acceptance or my grasp on life but for some reason I still feel like he’s still out there and going to put out a part one day, like he’s taking a break. And when Spotify plays better days, it doesn’t ever get skipped.

I'd say so. I think oblow talks about Dylan telling him after a Huf tour he was feeling really run down and exhausted, more than usual after a trip.
-
it still hurts so bad. everytime a hero dies you never really get over it. mortality is a heavy heavy thing, i can never quite wrap my head around it. the sadness really hits you during the moments one would think are mundane, at least for me. i still feel like all my lost loved ones are alive, and they are in a way. but its just fucked. death is so fucked.
anyways, RIP Dylan, and all the amazing people who have gone too soon.

Here are a few spreads of Dylan from 2010 - 2011. I always thought it was a shame the interim period between his Gravis part and cherry was glossed over, as he had a lot of great footage scattered throughout his X-Games part and various montages in The Cinematographer Project. These interviews are so fucking annoying when the interviewer does nothing but tries to be funny and make fun of the guy throughout the whole thing. Like that fucking thing "Worlds Best Brunch", omg
This is Tim O, no?
I've been reading the questions in his voice. They were both on Quicksilver, so made sense to me.
The ones I posted were both by Nieratko
every interview he’s ever done has been the same bullshit. i knew this was him before you even said so just by the questions. it’s almost like they gave him the ‘skater’s in cars’ gig in order to redeem him as a genuine person, which he is evidently not.

Wait, you didn’t know that’s who ‘Style’ was written about?
Being a contrarian earns you nothing at all, especially when it’s about someone so beloved by our little niche of the world.

Damn, I can't believe the blatant transphobia by Dylan here. You'd think someone that was around an inclusive activity like skateboarding would have been a little more open minded. Obviously he was influenced by Oblow and we know how much of a evil fake asshole he is, but still sad to see Dylan saying some sad chud shit.
It was 2010 which would have made him around 22? That's still an age where someone could be insecure about masculinity and all that. Just let the dead rest at this point.

Making excuses for him is how transphobia continues. Everyone has him on this pedestal but if you ask me it's fucked up he'll get a pass for this just because he was "immature" at the time and tragically passed away. Love his skating but the dude definitely had some fucked up hidden beliefs.
I don't see any judgement in his words, he's even empathetic to their experiences. Aside from using 'trannies' what's so transphobic?
don't have cow man, maybe spend less time online

We’re doing it today, fellas - on the anniversary of his death, we are cancelling Dylan Rieder based on an insensitive comment he made to a magazine in 2010.

It blows my mind how you view life through this prism. If giving context is "making an excuse" I don't think we can agree on anything. I think people who are constantly learning and taking in new ideas can agree that things were different in the past and also be forward thinking. What is your end goal here? If you think people revered dylan for thoughts like these and not for his skating and determination, I don't know what to tell you.
For clout? Have you ever had a bestfriend kill themselves because they were constantly bullied and told "you'll never be real woman"? Sorry but this subject hits close to home and will not apologize for standing up for trans people. You don't know me asshole. I'm not trying to cancel shit, I'm just upset that nobody will say shit because he was a "legend".
Unfortunately, your experience isn't as unique as you think. In my case, I don't believe that a celebrated dead skater's offhand poor choice of words is the hill I'd choose to die on. I tend to use context clues to determine if a person was truly hateful or said some really insensitive things that can be educated more. In this case, the person cannot learn anymore so I would focus on the difference you can make today.

If it was Chris Joslin that said it there'd be a 100 page thread about it but some dead pretty boy chud gets a pass because.....???
If any skater said it in 2010 and subsequently died, everyone would say “huh, he was young and dumb and isn’t around to explain himself. It’s best to give him the benefit of the doubt.”

so are we gonna finally admit the gravis part had some of the fakest steeze ever to grace skateboarding?
Guessing you weren’t on here then but that was a pretty huge topic so you’re late on that. I don’t see it as overly faked, some spots, but not overall.
And to come after him for apparent transphobic comments like 12 years after and also 6 after his death seems tacky. Obvi bad he had some slightly transphobic statements, yeah he should have been held accountable, but you’re also placing 2022 morals on a 2010 society. Things changed so dramatically in regards to understanding the trans community in the 2010s that trying to call him out on his ignorance feels incredibly forced and holier than thou.
-
what was transphobic about what he said hahaha “i’m not into that” = “i hate transgenders”
-
fuckin hell what just happened here? transphobic?
RIP dylan. you were special and made a hell of an impact on skateboarding, and more importantly, a lot of people.
-
I didn't notice any transphobic comments in that interview. Generally curious if I missed something? Nieratko being an insufferable twat is the only thing that stood out.
-

You know the typical Slaphole letting everyone know that if you used the word "tranny" to describe a transgender person in 2010 you're transphobic.
-
LOL, if that offended you guys, wait til you see his Halloween choices.
RIP Dylan.

Did it hurt me as a trans person to read that interview? Yes. I've always been enamoured with Dylan's skating and energy and growing up before I realized I was trans I wanted to be like him. That being said, you cannot hardly open a skate mag from that time without reading something homophobic. It shocks me, but it was a very different time with regard to the understanding of the trans community. Beyond that the interviewer really pushed that shit in a negative direction when it could have just been one off color comment. In my humble opinion we really should mourn the fact that he has passed before he was able to truly learn from that mistake and see the paradigm shift that has happened in skating. I said transphobic shit in my youth, and I am transgender. It's a product of a fucked up world. Perhaps he kicked himself everyday for that language like I do. We'll never know. RIP.
