Make my feet hurt just skating down the street
Just purchased a new E Dressen '91 slick. I was having a depressing week and needed some consumer therapy. Its a rad deck but I have 5 in the pile now... its just obscene... Its winter and before winter I was injured so I have more boards than I need.... I have to stop...
Fair enough. I guess the real regret is not skateboarding enough to use all these decks up.

Been a minute but the absurdly long Quasi I got last summer. Hated absolutely everything about it. Started sizing back down and haven’t bought a PS since. I’ll buy a Justin Henry pro model whenever that happens though.
Converse Fastbreaks in size 9.5. I usually wear 9.5, but apparently Converse run a little big and now the toecap isn't snug against my toe. In the past I wouldn't have minded but nowadays I need the shoe to be comfortably snug. And I was really looking forward to the Fastbreaks. I'll still skate them but I'm worried they'll devolve my flick or something.
Anti-Hero Black Widow, it’s 8.5” but skates like 8”. Felt too dangerous to skate.
2 sets of spits when I already have 1 on ice lolMaybe not a bad idea. I was looking at every online shop for formula fours last night. It’s a bunch of weird shapes and sizes. Amazon has some but almost 50 fucking dollars. I just want some 99 52 conicals or maybe fulls again. But I spent my fun money on a much more needed deck.
maybe my deck too, it's a quasi board. it just doesn't feel right, maybe it's too flat. it's kinda hard to pop for some reason, feels really sluggish. been thinking about retiring it prematurely but have only skated it 3 times. might just need to get used to it.

Same here. I got an Real Ishod 8.38 Twin Tail because I wanted to size up my boards and see if the twin tails was worth the hype. Not been liking the board much at all. Lost my kickflips since I usually pop them with my nose. 8.38 feels too unwieldy for flips. And the damn WB is unmanageable. Went from Thunder 148 Titaniums which was giving me ghost pop, to Indy 144 which slide better but make the nose feel too light.
I've only skated it for 3 weeks and I already want to retire it. It would still make an excellent wall hanger though.

I've skated a similar sized krooked full shape and IMO, the width isn't the problem. I thought it was at first but both the twin tail and the full shape dlx boards have too long of a wheelbase unless it's their se models.
Cons Weapon shoe size 10.5
I went half a size down; for the typical cons sizing issues and it ended up being true to size and just too tight/short for my toes for me. They are the only shoe over ever kept in a box in my closet brand new.

a few years back, I stopped by the shop to grab a deck before going out skating. I was kind of in a hurry to meet up with some friends so I grabbed a Real price point and set it up real quick. drove 30 minutes to a spot and the board split right in half down the plies within the first 10 minutes of skating. needless to say, that was the first and last real board i’ve ever bought. i still enjoy krookeds from time to time but I don’t think I’ll ever buy another real.

That's the description I was looking for! Light but not explosive, like the board would come up easily but it wouldn't follow my feet as a popped like when I rode Thunders. The only saving grace of the 144s would be sliding on the baseplate felt excellent, I could really feel the lock in when doing nose/tailslides. Skated the Walkers a while back, and main complaint was that with the stock insole your heel stood really high, almost rolled my ankle because of them. Switched to FPs and really liked skating them after that.
As someone else said and my contribution to this thread, Crockett 2's. Looks good, but stitching placement on the shoe is horrible, and the damn heel of the sole felt like a brick. The weird thing is both the Kyle's and the Crocketts use Waffle cup but the Walkers felt very different.
Probably the radial slims I'm currently skating. Not because they're red but apparently I got way too used to the tablet shape and now I'm having issues regarding locking in.

Fair, did you get them on sale? From what I've seen pro models are usually much more than 60 but if you liek them that's awesome. I gotta admit I'm bias agianst vans since my and my buddies have repeatedly had awful experiences with vans like bad suede, soles wear through, etc. I will say the Rowans look alright and it sounds like they fixed the rubber outsole from the marketing but they look too skimpy with no suede around the heel and only single stitching around the lace loop panel. I think for me vans just always look cheap with cut corners but again it's a bias of mine.

Honestly I've never been so utterly disappointed with Vans. They've really fallen off the wagon - the shoes are insanely expensive here in Australia for fuck all wear time. I hate to say it but current Lakai is a more appealing option than Vans at this stage.

I regret buying skate gear on Amazon (I got a gift card for my birthday, shut up)
Some 5.8 V-Lights popped up for $40, sold by Daddies, but they shipped some standard 5.8 with an awful orange baseplate. Bleh.
My experiences buying from shops (Seasons, Library, and through Parade) during my birthday shopping spree were all great.

Just did some online shopping... Most direct company sites were out of the shapes I wanted to I decided to support my local shop. They were out of my size (anything bigger than 8.5) too so I settled with an 8.5 baker og shape mellow concave. I havent bought this blindly in years but man, this concave is so much steeper than the 8.6 ah board I was riding. Havent given it a chance yet but I almost want to return it. Didnt want to get the quasi because they can be unpredictable, my last one had too mellow of a tail and i felt like i lost a foot off of my ollie. Looking into shoe shopping now and that also seems to be impossible. What do you normally ride?
Unless they changed something, that shit used to be real flat
I've been bouncing around brands for a minute. Rode an old 3d I found a couple years back and that was a game changerever since I've been looking for the perfect board. Quasi always seems to change their shapes ever so slightly that its hard to rely on them. Last one I had didnt have enough steepness in the nose or tail which fucked with my ollie height. I usually ride really wide boards like 8.75 to 9.25, footballs but I like 14.25 or 14.5 wheelbases. This baker may just feel steep because its smaller and or because I haven't ridden it enough. Like countless others, I bought the wrong size Converse CTAS Pro Highs (the skate Cuck Taylors) and skated them just enough to be unreturnable :)
If any Vans wearers out there are looking to have an affair with the CTAS Pro Highs, this might save you some time and money: go a full size down from what you wear in Vans. I'm a US 10.5 in Vans (Authentics, Old Skools, Sk8 His, Pro Skate everything) and the US 9.5 CTAS Pro Highs fit like a dream. Perfectly snug for skating but in no way too-snug. My feet are also on the wide side, if that makes any difference.

The best shoe you’ll ever skate for 3 days
Pretty much any vulc shoe that I bought awhile ago. I've had to donate or sell them, since they don't mesh with my feet like they used to. I guess that comes with being 26 and nearly 200 lbs. Lol
Thank you! I've probably fallen victim to blaming gear more than my weight and frequency of skating as to why I don't or can't skate like I used to. At 5'11" I should be around 165-180 (I think) but I'm still skating fine even with 15-30 lbs more than that on me. This current state has made me notice that many vulcs aren't working for me like they used to and maybe it's weight-related? My feet don't hurt from skating vulcs, but they don't feel amazing after them either. I don't get that in cups, usually.Expand QuotePretty much any vulc shoe that I bought awhile ago. I mean for this to be encouraging: weight you can lose (not sure what you think your weight could/should be, felt like the way I read it you are insinuating that it could be less), and you are in the prime of your skate life. I got into my best shape in my late 20s into my early 30s. It’s been witnessed within skateboarding, and also with many other pro athletes, that people can reach their athletic peak, late 20s/early 30s.
I point this out because I kept thinking I had to quit, or that it was all over, and I quit trying to take care of myself, and stopped progressing.
I weigh at LEAST 10 pounds too much, and could realistically weigh 20 pounds less and be healthy/fit. Losing weight will make my feet hurt less, more than any miracle shoe.
Shiiiit if I was young (20s) and fit, I’d only skate Authentics or something similar. I’m only skating flat ground anyways. I’m not paid to skate so I’m not out here dying to live.
Anyways, carry on

I have an irrational pull towards vulcs. Love the grip. I don’t skate better in them tho. They just look simple and classy, and as I have gotten older it’s nice to look less cluttered: 501s, plain t, plain vulc shoe.
Vulcanized shoes are most likely not good for feet.
I was more trying to say that you can lose some weight and feel better. You are young and have good to great skate years ahead!
Losing weight is hard.

When I was really young and world industries was still a thing, I got a board with flameboy sitting on top of an icebox with wet Willy frozen in a block.
I got a set of Royal trucks and got a color matched blue truck for the tail and a yellow truck for the nose to match the graphic...
Say what you will 14 year old me was killing the game hahaha.

Vans half cabs. Vans in general I usually regret but I thought I'd give them another try but I went through probably 6 different laces until I had to shoe goo them which just made them hard to loosen and tighten. And then just as I started to get used to them the soles blew out and I had holes through the bottom. And this all happened in like 2 weeks. Weakest shoes I swear.

I’ve regretted basically every Vans purchase I’ve ever made.
Picked up a 5boro 8" to see if I'd like the wood they use (I believe it is Chapman). And it feels so clonky and heavy compared to boards I've ridden in the past. I just can't get used to it. My ollies lag behind a bit and just don't pop like Im used to. I wish I could do something with the deck now.

I got used to my couch shape really easily, longer wheelbases are what usually give me more hassle. Guess it’s because I rode 7.75 boards for a good 15 or so years and I doubt any of them had a larger than 14.25 wheelbase

Rode any of them yet? I got 2 during the first launch. 1st board felt great after 2 weeks and being worn in a little but it snapped on a kickflip on flat after a total of 8 session? 2nd board felt soggy after 2 weeks despite the nose and tail having plenty of life. It was fun to support Canada Skate Shop the first time but I'd probably stick with Tactics shop blanks if I wanted Generator boards. Cheaper, more variety and don't have to worry about crossing borders.

Indy 149 Standards. They're just too fucking heavy! My last setup was a Hockey 8.25 with Thunder 149 Hollows and those were fine, loved the pop feel, but they're too low and didn't feel good when riding, lots of wheelbite, and in some way, I didn't feel stable, and those are a bit too light for my taste. The shop I patronized growing up swore by them, said they were a great value bearing. Then I remembered that over the years they had pared down their skate inventory and sold more cruisers and longboards. My guess, Big Balls aren't great for skateboarding that requires impact.
Purchase I regretted:
2 DOA decks - nothing wrong with them, got them on impulse and my stack of decks is around 8 excluding those 2.

A mystery box, at what was a ridiculously cheap price just before Christmas.
Super good deal for a deck of the right size, wheels of the right size, tshirt and socks. Everything the right size, actually (you could choose what size for every option).
Deck was a short wheelbase, wheels were soft cruiser wheels that I have seen before and are super slow, tshirt was recycled material which feels scratchy, socks were just weird.
Yes I am a big baby, but it was really good to be able to give them to others who would actually skate / wear them and be happy.
Never again buying anything except when I know exactly what it is and in the right size, shape, colour, etc.
Learned my lesson.
The shop just put up another mystery box today, which reminded me that a cheap deal is not always a good deal.

mystery boxes are usually just overstock of unsold/unpopular product especially if it's a skate shop. You really gotta be down for the brand for it to work out.
If you gave me 1000 guesses at what board I would get in a mystery box, I would not have even gotten the brand right on this one. That's hilariously bad.Expand Quote

I got influenced by the Ben Degros woodshop video and decided to give PS Stix a shot. Picked up an 8.375 Quasi after riding the DLX 8.5 14.25 wb for nearly two years.
The decks have nearly the same measurements and quality-wise I don’t see issues, but I cannot get along with the mellow kick and steep nose of the PS Stix. I feel like I barely get a regular pop and I ghost pop everything off the nose.
I try to ride my decks into the ground, but might have to toss this one after a couple weeks.

Purchased a long time ago but set up an 8.25 quasi and had a session on it. It already feels more dead than my weeks old real. Really want to convince myself I like these boards so I can support quasi but I just can’t. Ha, that fucker…
But I do like ps boards the best, even tho they are very hit or miss.
I’ve laid some to the side for a long while, came back and loved em. Not sure whats up with that. Some were sog and then dried out or something
Dragon WheelsI don't get the hype.
DC Manteca 4.
They are comfy and the fit is good but ..
They fall apart after one session.
The leather on the toes just ripped away.
I superglue all the stitches before but that was useless.
So I shoegooed the whole shoe already after one session.
I did maybe 20 fliptricks .
Edit: And the laces broke too.
I forgot to superglue them so maybe that's my fault but I rarely break laces in one session.
All with old griptape btw.
On some grinds/slides on some ledges/curbs/rails they drag/grip/catch a lot more than a hard wheel.
They also feel a bouncier and gummier than a hard wheel
Because they're soft, they also pitch you harder if you wheelbite
So a lot of people who are hoping that these would perform just like a formula four except smoother may be disappointed
Handles rough ground incredibly though and I think as far as powerslides go they're basically just as good as a hard f4
Es Silos last year. Mesh above the toe tore right away. I’m not one to tear through shoes really. Both tore within a week. Cool shoe if you like that duct tape aesthetic.
Twin tail deck.
It's not for me.

IDK what's up with NB 440s I got, because I think most people like them. I definitely prefer grippier shoes, because my feet were sliding all over the place skating transition and I ate major shit multiple times. If a board (nose/tail) is very flat, you can't get a lot of power out of your pop. Depending on which trucks you choose, you can change your pop angle. Ventures make it steeper, possibly cancelling out the feeling of it being too flat.

Pepper is my current go to and is in no way 'too grippy' as is being implied in that post. Is it grippy? Yes, yes it is.
It's grippy without being sharp (like Mob). Go back to Jessup if you want less grip than Pepper.[close]
How does grizzly fit into that spectrum?[close]
I like grizzly and would put it up there with Pepper; I'd still pick pepper though, I like grip with perforations =D Prepper is grippier jessup / less chunky mob; closer to mob-m80 but feels like there's more/larger grit.[close]
I have a woodworking side hustle and I have compared them to high end sandpaper:
Mob is 60 grit
Jessup is 80, Pepper seems to be 80 but better adherence to the backing.
Jessup Ultragrip is 60 grit
Mob M80 is, as you would expect, 80 grit
Grizzly feels like 100
Lower the number the grittier. There are big differences though if you are comparing different pad/paper materials but I compared to nicer cloth-backed sandpaper and swanky German orbital discs.
Personally speaking Mob is too much, Grizzly not enough, the rest are right in that sweet spot.

Bought them in a sale out of curiosity.
Tried them a few times and couldn't/didnt want to get used to them. They made my board feel tippy and awkward. Ollies felt low and off. Unstable at higher speeds. I might give them another chance on board with a bigger wheelbase.
I spent 90$ At an italian restaurant a week ago with my girlfriend. I’m still not sure if it was worth it. Probably not
What one do you recommend first? I'm thinking of returning them.Expand QuoteI just bought the Emerica Omega in Navy (non G6) and I was really underwhelmed. Synthetic suede all around the shoe, some odd silver accents. I wish I had gotten a pair of the all suede, because that synthetic suede is super floppy.[close]
Felt the same way about the Gamma. Didn’t expect the synthetic parts and they felt not good at all. Very happy with basically all my other Emerica shoes.

Loved the Santa Cruz Jake Wooten VX deck I rode a few weeks back - right amount of flex despite the layer inserts. Setup a board I had lying around with a carbon fiber top ply expecting a similar feeling. This one is way too stiff with zero flex, really painful to ride and it hasn't broken in after 4 sessions. I'm giving it a park regular next week.
Miles Griptape, bought some sheets on sale thinking that will be a mix between Jessup and MOB but I was wrong. Definitely is closer to JessupPepper is the only non-mob griptape I’ve ever liked. Less grippy than Mob but holds its grip better than Jessup which is cool.
I'm not hating it but I really regret not buying MOB, it also is wearing down really fast.

What doesn’t feel right to you?
Have you experimented with wheels of a different diameter and/or risers?
I’ve found that I enjoy Aces more with 55+mm wheels, 1/8th” risers, and on a deck thats got a wheelbase longer than 14.25”.
The added height, and slight change to the pop angle makes Aces feel much better for me even with the little bit of added weight.

I mean, it was a shoe designed for skateboarding in like, 2003? It hasn't really been substantially updated since then except for the insole. Maybe it doesn't have to be for some people and they like it. In cutaway pics I see of it it doesn't look that thick and midsole isn't super massive by any means. Maybe it is the materials used that give you that feeling?
I had some Dunk Lows last year that I liked the performance of. I sold them because I can't reliably get them. I didn't like the tongue or heel collar area thickness of them, but they did feel a bit more flexible. I think my main gripe is that for $120+ I expect a bit more from a shoe myself. I see that Tiagos are $100-$110, but they have more support, more effective padding, and better board feel for me. People love Emerica G6, which are now $90-$100 but Emerica has put effort into their designs in the last 2 decades even when people get harsh on them.
Last resorts. Still like the way they look but rlly uncomfortable and didn’t work for my skatingFirst week in mine sucked, but got better.

Clutch wood? Was tempted to pick up some Clutch decks on clearance but I can't recall the last time I rode 1.
I've seen a couple of brands (Magenta, Skate Mental, Traffic) trying to clear old stock of their Clutch boards from late 2021. I wonder if the retailer know these boards aren't as good as the regular stock, hence the prices.

8.75 Quasi deck.

I don’t understand the “blank trucks don’t grind” thing, I’ve skated Thunders, Ventures, Indy’s, Aces, and Films kind of completely interchangeably over the last five years and basically don’t notice a difference at all, or at the most adapt to the differences pretty much immediately

Dang, that’s my favourite shape in my quiver - I love it because it’s light (for a 8.75), flexy, short tail (6.7), 14.5 WB, and mellow. And it’s lasted me months (i skate about an hr a day). When I set up a 8.5+ BBS it just feels like an unresponsive stiff brick, but yeah I guess it’s what you’re used to, and if you’re coming from BBS they are really different and throw you off. Sorry, guess I’m just another PS apologist.
Last purchase I regretted was some f4 97, for street/sidewalk, just didn’t work out for me, too bumpy and slow for my crusty streets, my fault really. Switched out for 95 rictas, much better, and just stick to f4 101 for smooth ground.
