Watched I Care A Lot with the lady a couple weekends ago, didn't know what to expect but it was well done and fairly intriguing. Rosamund Pike and Peter Dinklage are great in it imo.
I've had a better understanding of what is happening around me while smoking Salvia as a passenger in a moving vehicle than reading your post

Wife and I have been watching Crime Scene: Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. It just keeps getting weirder. Similar to that Don’t Fuck with Cats 4 parter that was on Netflix last year.
[close]

People made it seem like a ghost story when it came out, the end conclusion of what likely happened really got me

It always amazes me how people want to to vacation in cali and they just get blasted by the amount of homelessness in the major cities (SF, LA, SD).  I worked in SF for a few years and almost daily i saw in broad day someone using heroin or crack in alleys
[close]
Yeah, I lived in LA for a little over a year and it was right after Guy Mariano's Epicly Later'd came out.  With him talking about skid row, and everything he went through I had to see it for myself. So a guy I worked with who had lived in LA his whole life took me down there.  I don't remember seeing the Cecil hotel specifically, but I can imagine how bad it was considering it was right there.
[close]

does anyone else think that Cecil hotelthing could have easily been 2 episodes shorter - so much time spent on completely irrelevent speculation..

I watched 'Behind her eyes' with my wife last week.. pretty dull for the most part, the ender ender was an unexpected twist after the predictable one that came before it. the thing that got me the most about the show is how good looking Bono's daughter is!
Yeah when I had posted about it originally we still had one episode left with still a ton left unanswered. When it was done I felt like we got duped because they took a bunch of YouTube detectives way too seriously.

Get hungry on it!

Bono’s daughter was great in the amazing show The Knick.  Def recommend.

The Cecil Hotel definitely gives itself away when it mentions in the first ep that she was acting out in the room and the other girls asked her to be moved and then they never went into it further.  Seemed obvious that was the key but they were keeping it in their pocket for later.

Also, I really enjoyed Moxie, but you’re gonna have to deal with a lot of Nico Haraga playing a sweet boyfriend to the lead

I think this about every fucking documentary on Netflix or any multi-part podcast. I really loathe the modern storytelling format where you get zero real new info in an hour and just more people saying the same shit or adding pointless details. I want to say that it started with the first season of Serial or maybe Up and Vanished. Lately I just watch the first 2 and last 2 episodes of most series and that's enough.

Yeah that definitely seems like the trend for true crime shows right now.

I think it's a combination of people trying to recreate the success of stuff like The Jinx/Making a Murderer, exacerbated by streaming sites focusing on content amount rather than quality.

Murder on Middle Beach on HBO was I think the last true crime series I saw that I really liked, but even that show was kinda guilty of that.

The thing is that Making a Murderer was blatantly misleading as fuck to the point where I can't consider it a legitimate documentary. They left out so much evidence on purpose that they basically just created the story they wanted to see.

Jinx was unrepeatable tho.

I thought Tiger King sucked. I don't find it interesting to watch meth'd out poverty porn.

I guess documentary style movies have a typical format these days, so its hard to make something really short, people like the long drawn out (and maybe irrelevant) details.   I went on a binge this weekend on amazon and watched Hot coffee- lady who sued Mc'D, and some shit about people who won the lottery and blew their money.

Cecil Hotel was at least padding out to make a point about the damaging effects of amateur True Crime sleuths.   It’s almost the opposite of I’ll Be Gone In the Dark on HBO which I definitely recommend as it’s free of most gimmicks.

Murder on Middle Beach partly felt like the kid was exploiting his own families tragedy to make a documentary.   I know the timing of the document release might have made it impossible for the series to include it, but it’s fucking annoying to have a possible cliffhanger like that.

Night Stalker was a great recounting of the crime.  Straightforward look into the detective work that went into it and crazy to learn he was like a few miles from in Orange County at one point, when I was less than a week old.

I thought Night Stalker was solid as well. Only thing I wish they included more of was some info on his background. Reading about him after there is some fucked up stuff involving his uncle that likely had a huge impact on who he became.

Prime not Netflix, but everyone should watch It’s A Sin, about the rise of the AIDS crisis in London in the 80’s.  Fucking brilliant.  Expected it to be pretty bleak, and some of it is, almost cried a couple times, but there’s also so much humour and wit as well.  Amazing acting, highly recommended all around.

And if you want to watch something dumb and lighthearted afterwards, Superstore gives you the pleasure of feeling like you’re at a shitty job without actually having to work.

It’s A Sin is on HBOGo in the states.  The guy who works as a tailor looks like a young Alan Partridge.

Love Superstore btw.   Actually approaches and talks about the dehumanizing policies of big box stores while still being funny.   Going to miss driving by the Cloud 9 exterior in Burbank

watching this doc on Hulu called Kid 90.  Its kind of a video memoir of Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster).  Aparently she was close with all the OG Supreme/Kids guys and even dated Justin Pierce?  anyway, nice little chunk of footage of that time and even a current interview with Peter Bici.  The whole thing is a little self-indulgent, but it was kind of cool and unexpected to see that.

I checked it out and thought it was random she was cool with the Kids cast, seeing harold hunter and brooklyn banks from her camera was dope...she sounded like she did mad drugs too

I listened to “Last Seen” the other week which was about the Gardner Art Heist in Boston. What a fucking waste of time.

It was guilty of every podcast cliche and a few times when the hosts called attention to themselves it felt like the podcast skit on Portlandia. But the padding was the worst. Let’s talk about the least likely suspect for 45 minutes! Let’s keep circling back to stock phrases like “There was one place where he knew valuable artworks would be easy to steal - The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.” They would NEVER abbreviate the name of the museum which began to drive me nuts; like I was listening to someone repeatedly calling me by first, middle, and last name.

I've been on a pretty big mafia movie/documentary kick lately, but Fear City: New York vs The Mafia is pretty good as an in-depth look at what it was like to try to take down the five families in the 70's.
Also, I know it caught a ton of hate, but I thoroughly enjoyed The Irishman. If you have 3.5 hours to kill then give it a shot.

Don’t ask me why (because I can’t say because of NDA) but I had to watch The Irishman about 12-15 times in a month.   It definitely sent me down a rabbit hole of researching who all these people are and how this movie should not be considered truthful in ANY respect.  Also, I think it’s funny he would have been the mafia figure in Scranton, PA so it’s a shame he never ran into Michael Scott
My biggest gripe with The Irishman is that the de-aging effects that they used and reportedly caused it to go way over budget and delayed release and all that, and ultimately for me it was more of a distraction than anything.  You can use all the special effects you want to make Deniro seem like some menacing thug, you aren't going to convince me that he isn't an old man.  They should have used younger actors for the younger versions of the characters, because the time for Deniro and Pacino to do it was 20 years ago.

Get hungry on it!

You can (kinda) de-age a face, but you can’t de-age and old man walk.  I really don’t understand why Scorsese had him play a 20 year version of himself.

Exactly, there's a scene fairly early in the movie where he beats a guy up in the street over something I can't remember, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about having seen it numerous times.  But he's just taking these old man swings at the guy, and that's all that stuck out for me.

Get hungry on it!

Anyone else watch Reply 1988? Its a Kdrama but easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. Really hits hard on capturing that feeling of growing up and having to accept you'll never get the days of your youth back but the show is hilarious with amazing characters and acting all around, only hits hard on the emotional level when you're at the last 2 episodes

I agree that it shouldn't be taken as an accurate account of that era and that the de-aging process was botched, but I still enjoyed it as a purely entertaining film. But, I say that as a sucker for Scorsese films.

Not sure if anyone suggested this, but watched Prospect the other night and found it well-acted and cool art style for a sci-fi movie:

HBO Max just put up the 3rd season of Gomorrah and it was just as amazing as the previous two.  Not sure if anybody else on here watches it, but in my opinion makes the Sopranos looks like a 7th Heaven.  Apparently the fourth season is already over with, but it takes forever to be made available in the US.

It's the best tv that's ever been made.

Maybe not the best way to put a genre out of its misery......but....so be it.

The Night Stalker documentary exhibits an obvious grudge against skateboards. During the introduction, someone narrates the outsider cliche of L.A.'s facade of glamorous celebrities (Kevin Bacon) masking the "other side" with a montage of satanists, Charles Manson, dead bodies, and a bunch of skaters queuing up for a launch ramp session in Venice Beach (several years after the Night Stalker timeline). Otherwise, half the movie is the director stroking off law enforcement.

I thought Night Stalker was solid as well. Only thing I wish they included more of was some info on his background. Reading about him after there is some fucked up stuff involving his uncle that likely had a huge impact on who he became.

Spoiler alert. The night stalker lived in the Cecil too.  As we watched the Cecil show, I wondered if that hotel season of American Horror was playing off the Cecil internet hype at the time.

If you have 3.5 hours to kill then give it a shot.

check out the documentary "Our Godfather" on Netflix, and if you dig that they made a movie called "the traitor" based on the same guy.

Mission Viejo is also where in OC he went to steal the car.  Heard about it growing up, as it happened 3 days after I was born there, but my mom always mixed it up and said it was the Hillside Strangler and not Night Stalker.

I’d LOVE a follow up doc on what his groupies have been up to since then.  Really want to know what their lives are like

Bad Trip is comedy skits filmed while they interact with an audience, like Borat or Bad Grandpa. Basically an Eric Andre movie.
