seems he's not feeling that Mark Suciu is doing a similar trick at Love?

Couldn't find it but someone else back noseblunted the same barrier. Drawing a blank on who but the pics were posted side by side on somebody's IG a few days ago. I also have a cool Kalis story. I went to the park and there were maybe 5 dudes there, three of them were Kalis, Wes Kremer, and Cyril (kinda random for MN). He came up to me and was like "what up I'm Josh". He went to give me knucks and the light bounced off his DC ring and blinded me for a second...it was awesome.

the post was poking fun at Adidas.
Suciu is my dude... i think the trick and photo is dope...

If it were editorial... thats one thing.. but to run it as a shoe ad... cmon guys... We did that shit 15 years ago. I drug that barrier and had a vision... so we did it. I think its wack as fuck for adidas to run that as a shoe ad.
I could sit here and explain what makes it different than any other photo at the same spot.. but in my opinion, there is things you just have to respect.

come up with your own ideas......

thats what i meant by the post.

Thing is, all that kind of phony mid- period nostalgia is marketing gold, unfortunately.
The skateboarding mainstream has dried up culturally so the goldfish memory of an activity with an average generational cycle of 6 or 7 years means a lot of that stuff which should be lore is up for grabs for claiming as an homage or some other buffoonery.
Like the EMB stuff in that Supreme thing, to me its a bit corny in the only board_thing which needs modernity to push it forward. Surfing and snowboarding renews its terrain with the weather, skating can't so it should press on and not repeat the same stuff claiming roots or respect.

Skateboarding would be so boring if you could never do tricks at the same spot other people have done tricks. Were they suppose to put a disclaimer that Josh Kalis has done a trick here before? Even after Kalis's explanation I still don't see why anyone should hate it. If anything he should be hyped that someone remembered his idea after 15 years. It's not like Adidas or Susci are making it seem like they were the first to skate it like that.

Backing Kalis on this one.  If it was an homage in a video part or maybe an ad for a struggling core skate brand, maybe one thing.  But for a multi-million dollar corporation that is vying for the direct marketshare that DC/Kalis represents, it's a morally bankrupted, total lack of creativity on Adidas' marketing advertising dept.  About the same as when Nike used the classic Minor Threat cover for their "Major Threat" ad.

Yah and DC is owned by a publicly traded surf company? What about Chris Cole's nbd ad campaign? A lot of those tricks have been done but you don't see  older pros hating on it publicly.

It's just skateboarding and there isn't a rule book.

I'm looking at it from the marketing point of view I guess.  Sure, take two famous photos, combine the imagery, bite the trick, should at least be a tribute shoe on Adidas at that point.  The Nike thing I was referring to...it's just punk rock, no rules who cares who sits on a step who hasn't sat on a step before...

I guess you didn't see when some kid called him gay, and kalis went fucking off on instagram on this kid, only to delete it shortly after. I saw danny renaud in the comments saying it was lame to do.

Maybe thought, "oh damn remember when people used to skate it like this back in the day?" then just shot a photo on it with the photographer. He has a mean bs noseblunt. Can't think of a better trick for that thing, and obviously the photo was gonna turn out amazing. It did, and they turned it in for an ad. Actually Facebook posts on Slap are fucking stupid. Whoever started this thread is fucking dumb. Kalis has been with DC forever, look from his perspective...this is blatantly ripping off a DC ad layout, actually a poster layout. It's Josh Kalis's perspective, his post...You should recognize that starting a thread on this shit is fucking stupid not what his opinion is. You're taking everything way out of context. Seriously Adidas can just do an ad of the shoe and their logo, it's Adidas. Some of you need to keep scrolling and not take still frames of everything and make threads about it.

The photographer (assuming he has seen some skate photos from the last 15 years) clearly based this composition on old photos which framed the Robert Indiana sculpture on one side and barrier on the other. Too bad he didn't hold the shutter open to illuminate more of the background.

The ad itself, like DC's pre-corporate standard layout, features an enlarged photo of the tilted shoe one one side, with a 3/4 page photo on the other. Also, the film edge is visible with the Fuji "RDP" code showing. DC ads always printed the film code, sometimes with the sprocket holes (35mm). This ad may have been shot with a digital camera with the film code added later--typically 120/220 rolls have numbered frames as well.

First thing i thought about :

(http://i.imgur.com/auVcI0d.jpg?1) (http://imgur.com/auVcI0d)

We get it Kalis the barrier was your thing and you made it into a whole ad campaign, got it on Xgames and even got mad when Pops took it then hid it from you after he had a photo in it. You ruled philly in the early 2000's and besides Stevie you were the first name that popped up whenever someone talked about Love. Its a new era bro, let it go! Suciu/Ishod are the new Kalis/Stevie so let them enjoy their prime. Shits gonna get repeated just like how when you revamped Love after Ricky's movement died. Don't be a salty Ray J and start chanting "I hit it first".

While there are points on both sides to be made, I feel like in the social media age where things can be misconstrued and over analyzed, not really much to gain by calling anyone out. The people who agree still agree and the ones who don't or are oblivious will just have a negative opinion now.
While I agree that at times calling something out is warranted and exciting when both parties are involved, not sure anything was gained in this instance.
Anyone who knows is aware of all you did at the spot and the similar aesthetic of the ad layouts, and those guys know it's borderline ripoff.
Everyone else is admiring a well done trick at a classic spot by a current talented skater that most people think favorably about.

I'm backing Kalis on this one.

It's not the trick, it's the pretty blatant art-direction rip off. It raises the question - does Adidas have art dudes who would know they're biting a classic ad? Or was it an accident? Either way, not really cool of Adidas.

It's not like Kalis put everyone on blast, he just pointed out that Adidas should step their game up. A totally reasonable call I think.

I wouldn't even call it a rip off. For starters, Suciu's trick is at night, shot in color and is fisheye. Kalis's was long lens, black and white and during the day. It's completely a nod to him and nothing else. Imagine Frank Gerwer posting on Instagram or Facebook photos of Forrest switch flipping Wallenberg and say the same thing. It would be like WTF?! I'm sure everyone would have been way more hyped to see a Kalis post setting positive, like "damn, it's sick to see new cats ripping love, etc etc.." Instead he shows his ass.

Regardless, hyped for Suciu and his first shoe. It looks like a winner and he seems very humble.

Kalis is still an OG and hopefully he drops atleast one more memorable part.

I'm under the impression that Kalis, especially after watching his Epicly Later'd, gets pretty butt-hurt fairly easily. Like if I was him, I wouldn't give a single fuck about some off-handed comment Jason Dill made...but dude gets so offended, he has to get Patrick to make him his own episode so he can "prove" to Dill that he was wrong. The fact that Kalis has been on Slap so much over the past tow days to know that this topic has been on the top of Useless Wooden Toy Banter for those two days is incriminatingly pathetic.

Funny how sucui keeps popping up in these 'contrived' scenarios. I get where kalis is coming from, it's not just a 'who did x trick at y spot first' or a parody Natas board graphic... It's the fact that the new sucui ad is unoriginal and poser-ish. Copycatting is not a tribute and it's not a Powell skull holding a banana either. This is Adidas copying the DC advertising style like everyone forgot about it. And kalis helped build the DC empire so it's not like he's not gonna notice

Some of you need to keep scrolling and not take still frames of everything and make threads about it.

this is SLAP bitch! and you're a fucking moron for telling me what to post on here and what not to post on here. also he posted it on facebook where people can share their thoughts on this topic as well so why not bring it to SLAP= where Kalis posts. again its been said here there a number of factors that make it different from Kalis's DC ad.

I understand kalis. Its like a corpo non skate company "stealing" a certain skate vibe created by skate rats and tries to capitalise on it without being part of this in the first place. However I hate corpos as much as I hate intellectual property. Coming to my mind corporations try to capitalize in things that are far more damaging for us, like monopolizing water and food so skate vibes are not exactly something I would bother with for now. Finally, this is the part where I say thats capitalism there is nothing sacred except profit, so suck it.

Think if someone nabbed an iconic trick from Macba or Rincon and then got an ad with it? The most recent example I can think of is Ryan Gallants kick flip nose blunt down clipper. What if a mag gave Cole a cover with a bluntside down clipper? I'm with Kalis, it's a dope pic but it's a already been done. Different trick yeah, is it a tribute sure, but can they come up with something different? Yes. It's easy to claim homage. It's also possible the Adidas art director doesn't know about the original. Another point is LOVE is so big with so many things to hit, it's kinda weird that he wouldn't try get something different. Does anyone else think a layout pic of a bs noseslide on the fountain ledge at the bottom would look sick? Much better than this to be honest.

He turned the noseblunt f/s to backside

From a photography standpoint, I like the Suciu ad better. In photography, the brightest parts of the photo and the biggest thing in the photo naturally and instantly draw your eyes.

The Kalis ad with LOVE sculpture being in color as opposed to all black and white screams photoshop and is a tired gimmick used in wedding/amateur photography so sadly that detracts from the timelessness of this image and naturally draws the eye to it instead of the skateboarding happening next to it and is almost equal in size or even larger than Kalis is in the photo so the skating carries less weight visually.

I'm sure everyone has seen countless images photoshopped like this by now:

The Adidas layout is similar in some ways so the biggest crime the graphic design department at Adidas committed is plagiarizing that lower white space for text.  I feel that incorporating a triangle for the text would have been more effective.  Triangles also naturally draw the eye so a triangle below Suciu skating would draw you to his name/trick name and actually also act as an arrow to direct your gaze to the skateboarding above it.

Instead of saying "Introducing", the logo with the circles inside a triangle below the shoe they are trying to sell would again draw your eyes to it and direct your eyes like an arrow to the shoe above it.

Nah. If someone did a proper kickflip b/s noseblunt down Clipper that was actually tweaked all the way, not that half-ass'd noseblunt Gallant did, then I think it's worthy of an ad or mag cover.

i can see both sides. i think it's sick that the vibe that kalis, stevie and dc put down is being carried forward for another generation but at the same time adidas could probably try distance it's marketing a little more or add something to it. getting called out doesn't seem that over the top and i don't see why it's so hard for people to get why kalis did it.

but if you look at something like zero's image and how much it's been recycled over the years, if your going to have a big impact your also gonna inspire others and get bit from time to time.

I like the above statement.

It's not like the original DC ad broke any new ground advertising-wise. It was a big photo of a good trick with a picture of the shoe in the ad. I'm certain it was an idea destined to be repeated by another ad campaign because it wasn't that deep to begin with. DC has a history of great skaters and shoe innovations, but let's not think they were on the forefront of ad layouts.

Haha why are people trying to make it sound like Adidas set this whole thing up? Some of you are acting like some marketing dude told Suciu to do this. Pretty sure he just skates there a lot and decided to do this as an ad. I doubt it was some scheme to target the skaters who'd remember the original ad. Some people are reading way too much into this shit, unless there's something Kalis knows that we don't then I still find all of this hate on Suciu/Adidas pretty stupid.
[close]

this. he was probably just skating at love and there happened to be a barrier. That's probably pretty close to what actually happened, give or take a few details. Wasn't a diss to Kalis, probably wasn't a tribute. I bet it was just more of a nostalgia thing.

God. Who fucking cares. I just typed way too much.
[close]

I think Chavo hit the nail on the head. It's more the image that Kalis is talking about. The main image is composed by the photographer and ultimately by the marketing person who does the edit for the add. Kalis added trick, barrier, and spot location, but it was the photographer (probably Blabac) who composed how the trick would be shown ultimately. I, personally like the DC add better, although Sucio's trick is fucking sick, I don't think the wide angle shot with the giant Adidas shoe on the side is a good look. Shit just seemed rushed and mediocre to me (and this is my preferred sweat-shop label when it comes to soccer related products). Therefore, if the marketing editor is going for the early DC look he sure is blowing it.

Props to Kalis for coming on slap and addressing some of this. Hopefully he doesn't get pulled in further to where we have to hear an extensive rant.

For what he had, he probably wasn't paying even 2 grand. New York isn't cheap, but its not to the point wear what he had cost 7 grand a month. Dill can say whatever he wants, so can Kalis. Too bad Kalis tends to say a lot about how butt hurt he is about people not giving a shit about his irrelevant skate career in 2015. DGK sucks.

Dude was living pretty lavish in his DITL episode. I am sure NY wasn't as expensive then but still, it's not like he didn't get hooked up.

Jason Dill - Day in the Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKIdPS-IruI#)

Yeah but by the time he said the shit about Kalis, he had blown all his money. Shit, even back when he was on The Osbournes, he was on the show because he had no place to stay and had no money. In that Crailtap profile about Strobeck, he makes the point that Dill is doing good because he has an apartment now.

That's probably pretty close to what actually happened, give or take a few details. Wasn't a diss to Kalis, probably wasn't a tribute. I bet it was just more of a nostalgia thing.

God. Who fucking cares. I just typed way too much.
[close]

[close]

I'm good. I Enjoy reading the debate.

What legacy Adidas has to skate? DC was sold by a big corporation, but made  history in the 90s and helped build a solid identity to skateboarding. Adidas enters the market without historical reference, and wants to COPY the golden years of a skater as Kalis and a brand like DC?

The problem is not Suciu, or photo, but a corporation who can not create their own status in skate, have to imitate to create your identity.

Josh Kalis photo is a lot better. Its RAW.

I think it's great that Adidas ran the ad and I'm sure their art guys are well aware of the Love park history. BUT, this is not a rip off in "art-direction". Congrats to Josh for coming up with the genius idea but dragging a barrier to Love is not art direction. If anything, give the Adidas team some credit. They got Josh Kalis from DC to post their Adidas ad on his Facebook and share it with everyone. Now THAT is smart.

To say that it's a blatant rip off you would have to do the same trick, shoot it from the same angle and apply the same color treatment if you really want to take it all the way. Everyone knows this is not the first time Suciu skates love park. Even the barrier looks slanted. Not similar at all.

How long does a company have to be in skateboarding to be considered legitimate? Adidas has supported Mark Gonzales for nearly 20 years (and even sponsored Kalis back in the early-mid 90s) which is just about the amount of time DC has been corny and farming itself out to things like motocross, car racing and mall shops.

That is what I am saying. DC is hardly Lakai or other more core brands. I considered them as one of the giants right next to Adidas and Nike where their riders were making a great living off of it. I figured that was where most of Dyrdek's money was coming from even before Rob and Big.

Adidas has been making shoes for riders for a long time but no one really gave a crap till they did it right in the past years. I remember seeing their shoes in CCS catalogs with like 2 models. Sucui nor Adidas should really be given flack for this. Like people said before, the art direction is the only bad thing I can seem but I don't think it's worth this much attention.

I forget exactly what you're talking about, is it the "up river" debacle? Either way, Dill is full of shit. If you're taking his side over Kalis on anything, you are off your fucking tits.

They're both kooks, but Dill was right. Kalis' episode begins by him and Patrick going to his pretty big and nice house. Compare that expensive house in Cali to the little efficiency apartment Jason Dill lives in in his episode, there's a notable upriver and downriver dynamic there.

bringing outside plastic TEMPORARY bjects to inner city street plazas is also questionable may as well be a jump ramp. it's not endemic! the cans, and the tiles, are endemic. also, how else are you supposed to shoot that shot?!? anything significant done at love deserves to have the contextual backdrop.

you're right, but you can't front that while surprising to see after 3 tricks ended up in the final cut, most did not deserve to be in the video of that magnitude. Supreme, FA etc, possible.

If you're running a pro model shoe, can definitely still put out clips (cherry) and 3 tricks are used for your section from a lucrative sponsor, it warrants calling out.

i'm mainly fixating on personality, its forced "bohemian" i'm old enough to see through it all.

o'conners show with olson was talking about him frequently doing "art" things when the cameras were rolling, feeding into it. it's a job but isn't this all about what's real and what's contrived?

I still remember when they'd have undercover cops come post up and grab the first kid they'd see skating. 9 out of 10 times, those undercover cops were wearing DC Kalis' that they got for free. Love Park will be gone in a year. At that point, all we can do is hope some good tricks have gone down before it's a wrap. Forget this one-upsman nonsense.

I'm backing Kalis on this one.

It's not the trick, it's the (http://pretty blatant art-direction rip off). It raises the question - does Adidas have art dudes who would know they're biting a classic ad? Or was it an accident? Either way, not really cool of Adidas.

It's not like Kalis put everyone on blast, he just pointed out that Adidas should step their game up. A totally reasonable call I think.

One does not need to emulate every aspect of something in order to be a "rip off". This, however, does not seem to be the issue. Beyond creating a parody or tribute or fraud, Adidas's staff just seems to be lazy and creatively uninspiring. Every month the same magazines need to fill an issue with new advertisements (for years and years). This was another one of those months.

Isn't the upriver thing more about how you spend your money, than about how much money you have? Kalis likes jock shit, whereas Dill splurges semi-ironically on high fashion. Or am I totally off?

Thanks to social media we at least now know that Kalis is looking for admiration and approval as much as Dill is. I just wish Kalis had never signed on here. He always seems so petty, even if he is right. Which I don't think he is in this case. You dragged the barrier, did you? Who gives a fuck man. You have a great legacy, don't undermine it by overestimating it.

Can someone elaborate on the Love Park shut down conspiracy? IF there is anything to that then Kalis really is a monumental kook.

I always took it as Dill referring to the differences in their lifestyles using Michigan terminology...upriver being more affluent suburbs past Detroit, downriver being the grittier lower class Michigan.

Cairo Foster and Kenny Reed were here for a little bit and wanted to move here. They were asked not to blow up the spot by doing so, so they left. It's a known thing certain undercover cops were wearing DC's. It was a pay-to-play scenario, plus to regulate the large numbers of out of towners and weekend warriors that would come skate.

Actually it doesn't have anything to do with money, but more about who you surround yourself with.
Im not sure what you mean by "jock shit". That's funny to me.
Conspiracy to shut down Love?? Haha. Please. We tried to save that shit for years.... In return for that... 9 years later... The city sued me for 160thousand fucking dollars and denied all my attorney appeals... And straight extorted me. As soon as the city council  man Nutter became mayor... He was on a mission to fuck me. And he did. It costs me 20k in attorneys for them to tell me... "Hey... This dudes got a hard on for you. It's gonna cost you way more to keep fighting them and they won't stop".
And yes... Paying off the skate task force was a way that we... We as in Stevie, KT, and all the locals could get a bit of a heads up before they came in and gripped people up.
This was when skaters where getting their ass beat and guns pulled on them. It was a bit more serious then. Nothing like getting hemmed up taken down to the concourse getting robbed and smacked up by the cops.
When the head cops accepted shoes as payment... It was on. That was for weekdays. I always went to nyc for the weekends.

FYI.... I wasn't there when Cairo and Kenny where there. But I remember hearing something about something. Had nothing to do with me. That may have been before I moved back.
When I lived there the second time... There were 15 or so pros that lived there... So it makes no sense someone would tell those dudes not to move there. Lol.

They claimed I paid no "city wage tax". It's a tax you have to pay when you live in Philly.
It was way past the 3 year statute... But my tax attorney I used in those days passed away a couple years before they came after me. So since I didn't have the original copies... I couldn't get them from him... And the city is the only entity that would have them... Thy said they didn't have them. Even though my fed and state were perfect.
Principal balance of 40k+penalties and interest=156k.
In the appeal... The judge was agreeing to re-paying the 40k as he saw no sign of malicious non pay... But the lady siting next to the Mayer was there and stood up and made a big fuss. They agreed (the judge and this lady) hat they would drop a percentage of the penalty. 117k owed. 3,100 a month for 3 years.
Fuckin sucked. I have 2 more payments.
He government there is so corrupt. Everything from dealing with them back in the day with DC offering the million after they said we could skate love if they got 100k a year, the. Denying... To the cops beating up skaters, to the way Mayer Street scandal on where he got the money to reduce Love with the planters and shit... To finally the bullshit in fight able case against me.

That's cool you found a way with the cops. I had a pair of white leather DC's during that time. They fell apart within weeks but I loved those shoes. I can see why they would rob you for them.

Damn, thats bullshit considering you were probably paying a sizable amount in basic property taxes at the time or inflated rent prices. Suck how cities can't see that places like love, pulaski, pier 7 and emb were culturally important because of skating, hopefully realizing this like with the Courthouse is a step in the right direction

Kalis....come on guy! you want us to feel sympathy? 3k a month for the last 3 years yet you can afford a lambo and a pristine z28 1969 camaro. Yeah a doubt 3k was killing your pockets. Love was big part of your prime and is where I who live in the west coast first heard about you. For what the city is making you pay I'm sure you made more while blowing up love. My problem isn't with you its with the mentally that you want to call dibs on a certain obstacle and image on Love specially something that happened 15 years ago. If your hate isn't with Adidas ( which you rode for) or Suciu (who i think was just paying tribute) then its that you in some way feel disrespected in something that seems like more of dab versus a diss. I like that you tried to change the subject by saying Philly made me pay money that i forgot to pay so i own it. If Suciu hadn't done it somebody else would have done it in years to come and I'm sure somebody will eventually do it switch, but in no way is that disrespect its progression. So get out of the way and enjoy it instead.

I rode for Addidas. Yes. Wait.... You trying to say a twin turbo 69 Camaro that I built with my hands... All the fab work, the welding, the Athletics, ect... Is a jock car?? Lol.
Maybe the definition of Jock has changed or what the perception of jock is.
Curious as to what you think a "non jock" car is?
As far as your comment of "making bank" goes... I don't rely on one source of income. I have skate income. But there are much bigger things I've put in place so that I don't need to rely on skateboarding to finance my life.
That way I have the freedom to pick and choose what a associate myself with.  No need to to represent something strictly for a check.
You may not know but I have been in "car world" about as long as I have been in skate world. So I understand both cultures. It's awesome to step out of one and into the other. Both compliment each other... And there is very little cross over so it allows me diversity.
It's too big of a world out there to be closed minded.

lol, I remember seeing this add and thinking WTF? The whole thing just seemed odd - from the trick to the way it was shot. It's funny to hear that it was a warm-up trick, can't imagine what the regular trick was on that thing. Can't understand why they didn't hook you up with shell toes since these were the main ones people would skate in back in the day. At first Paolo and Mark wouldn't get shell toes either since they were trying to promote some "skate" type ones. Those in this add, though, looked pretty good. I remember having a pair for school but I wouldn't skate them because they felt too rigid on top.

May be DC can copy this classic ad and art direction? Settle the score.

I'm pretty sure Kalis said that Adidas sent a non-skate photographer to shoot this photo and that he didn't have a clue how to take photos of skating. Thus the end result was pretty crappy ;D

Eye witnesses at the scene say they saw what looked liked to be Love Park legend Ricky Oyola standing in the shadows of the rubble whispering to himself, "Lotta walls, lotta fucking SHIT!"
Self-proclaimed 'King of the East Coast' Bobby Puleo is refusing to comment on the incident at this point claiming that he is too busy stockpiling early 00's I-path Grasshoppers and chasing down (French) spot rushers to insult them in front of their pregnant wives. All Josh posted was a mild jab on Instagram towards Adidas about their unoriginal and similar ad. You are the ones who asked him why it bugs him.

Cant understand all the Kalis negativity in this thread but I can see why there are only a handful of pros interacting with SLAP.
My thoughts exactly.
Kalis said that he's friends with Mark too; it could've just been Kalis busting his balls a bit, but everyone just blew it out of proportion.
Kinda reminds me of when Koston and Leo had that "beef" a few years back and everyone on here was getting all riled up about it and hating on Koston for attacking Leo for no good reason, only to find out that the whole thing was just some inside joke between the two.

that makes sense, also i would love if DC made a shoe with a really high side sole like that, i look the look of a even, high sidewall shoe but all the they make gets thicker at the back and higher, so insoles don't fit, then theu go and make the front smaller, so it's thin as a vulc and hurts, that's why i like shoes like the es accel, most vans even though they need to step their game up, and etnies marana for this reason. the look of the shoe i think is the best are shoes like the Fallen trooper model, it just feels more solid, but i'm making a kalis thread into a shoe thread right now so eh.

Kalis, you must be pretty arrogant to think that Suciu and the photographer MUST have thought of your GREAT trick before shooting.  I guess they had to have thought about something done who knows how long ago.  Hell, Suciu is young and may have never seen it.  Get over yourself.  How many people have done a back tail on the ledges in a line at love?  100's?  Boo hoo

That said, you're still one of my favorite skaters.

I'll always be grateful for the anonymity of the internet.

I remember once it allowed me to chat with a professional skateboarder.

I used really strong words, called him a little bitch, told him he didn't know what he was talking about, challenged him to a dual, to the death no less, mocked his sexuality, told him I had done his sister in the anus, and then demanded he upload dick pics to prove his dick wasn't 3" long.

Yeah...I made him MY li'l bitch.

Shortly afterwards I saw this little bitch pro know-nothing out at a local spot. I was sitting there watching him skate and in my head I thought, "Oh man, that's that bitch I totally owned on SLAP." I wondered briefly if he'd ever know I was the guy who had embarrassed him in front of, basically, the whole world. Then I remembered there was know way he would ever know it was me, and I chuckled in my head.

Oh yeah.

Fuckin' bitch.

The history of modern street skating is actually very short. It is likely that the skater, photographer, graphic designer, and art director all knew of the original source. Kalis's experience with the noseslide photoshoot (North Mission Beach?) was probably indicative of Adidas (skateboarding) until they hired Bryce Kanights as their marketing manager. Most corporate skate entities, after Nike SB's success, now hire skateboarders for their graphic design and marketing teams so that team riders only suffer a minimal amounts of "clowning".

To be honest, the original photo is not groundbreaking photographic composition. If anything, it is a pretty obvious shot. Nor is a noseblunt on a jersey barrier specific to him. Kenny Reed did one in his 7 year glitch part (which is the same era), so is Kalis gonna complain about that? He's just being a little bitch. Rewatching his Epicly Later'd, he seems like a pretty dumb and immature dude who hasn't reconciled the fact that the majority of skateboarding doesn't recognize his skating as all that important. If you have to keep talking about how great you are, are you really that great?

Wow you got some stones calling Kalis out like that. He never claimed it was a "groundbreaking photographic composition." It was a blatant rip-off of what DC did years ago so for one shoe company, especially Adidas, to re-hash essentially the same ad is pretty crap.

You don't have to try hard to incorporate the RI sculpture into a photo taken at LOVE, and I don't think showing the film code/edge in ads originated with DC.

I don't think the fact that Kalis had an ad skating the barrier in a similar way first means that adidas' ad department failed to use independent thought process. I mean, skating a barrier off of a ledge in 2002?  It's really not that groundbreaking.

Both ads are using street skating to market their product.  Both tricks are dope.

Does the car world have the same sort of "my spot. my trick." philosophy? If you build a camaro and some guy built a similar camaro but he put green fuzzy dice in the mirror 7 years before, can he be like "great look at this fucking guy" or does nobody actually give a shit

Even though I'm sure your being sarcastic....
100% it applies.... Unless it's the same car company giving a nod to the past generation that they themselves created. Such as all the new retro cars.

lol, I read that post and couldn't help but laugh because it seems even more true in the car world, but maybe that's because I'm way deeper in the auto industry than skate side of things.  It sounds silly but in the car scene, especially show scene, you never want to straight copy someone else's build on the same platform, and you will never be taken seriously if you do.  Skateboarding is a little different in my eyes, but automotive and skateboard cultures have a lot of similarities.

Props on your cars, man, keep doing what you're doing.  I've made a career out of the automotive aftermarket, really wish I could be tied into skateboarding side of things as well.  Oh and hey, if you ever need wheels for one of the Bimmers, HMU! :P

Its not about the trick or Kalis heritage. Its about big corp business.

Kalis wont sign with nike.

Hes in hardcore tight with DC. Long after hes pro he'll still be on DC(which wouldnt happen with nike)

Plus they help him with his cars lol, and nike aint gonna do that.

Kalis is basically your underground dyrdek

Playin it smart, playing all sides, makin bank...

Only difference is he skates, and fuckin rips at that.

If you hate on kalis decisions your not an idiot.

The man is smart

Kalis a sooky wigga always will be. Grow some brah, you just sour because the popularity/appreciation for your bubbly ass pro shoe is slowly but surely diminishing? The only time I'll see someone wearing a pair of DC's these days is rocking a grocery store wife beater and a pair of quicksilver board shorts... Don't you get sick of smelling your own shit on the daily??? Pull that head out :-*
